Write What You Know

Aaah yes, that fabulous piece of advice telling you to stick with what you know so as to maintain authenticity in your writing. I think it’s pretty good advice. After all, you can’t really write about something in a believable fashion unless you know something about it, right?
Right?

Bullshit.

It’s a great piece of advice, but it is often taken so literally that people stiffle themselves to the point that they can no longer write.

cover art for Vicki & Lara ebookDo you really think I’ve been in an abusive relationship? That I’ve been trapped in naked in a play cage with no quick way out? Cover art for Bill, third in the Meeting Each Other SeriesThat I’ve enjoyed threesomes or sensual phone sex with my girlfriend (as a dude)? Do you really think Ileandra is a vampire? That she drinks blood to survive? Or do you believe that she dressed as a clown, walked into a church and opened fire during a funeral?
These are all things we’ve written about and while some of they may be true (you decide which things) some of them aren’t. But I hope you have no real way of telling because there is authenticity in the writing.
Despite never having done many of those things we inject authenticity through writing what we know.

Let me explain.

I’m currently waiting for responses to ‘Slippers & Chains‘. There has been a little news in that regard but nothing I can share yet. But it’s left me gnashing my teeth and checking my email every couple of hours (yes, I realise that’s a goal I’m failing miserably).
Those feelings leading me to do those things are irritation, frustration and impatience. I know them pretty well.
…How do you think Karen felt trapped in that play cage knowing that Dan’s parents were on the way? I’ll bet she felt all those things and, because I know what they feel like, I can inject those mental and physical feelings into my writing.
Never mind that I’ve never been beaten by a partner, I know what it feels like to be scared, so I can use that feeling to make you believe that I have. Or that the character I’m writing about is (or was) in real peril.

nice red vampire lips with blood and teeth, from OpenClipArtI’m sure Ileandra has never needed to drink blood to survive but she sure as hell understands longing and lust.

“Yeah, fine,” I hear you say, “but what about things that you can’t experience, like the weather in ancient times, or space travel.?
-_-
Fine, I say. Maybe we can’t experience those things ourselves, but there are plenty of other people who have. WE can talk to them. We can use their experiences to enrich our writing. People blog about all the time. There are entire magazines devoted to it. So why can’t I pick and choose the bits I need from those to do what I need?
More specific to current works, if I need to know more about a particular BDSM aspect there are lots of people in my life for me to ask. There is no shortage of people willing to share knowledge and experiences. And, if they want paying at all, some of them want no more than a cup of coffee while they chat to you.

“Yeah, I’ll give you that, but what about the things you can’t get? Like weather patterns in ancient times, or languages from old civilisations?”
-_-
As writers, we’re tasked to report truth, yes, but we’re also tasked to entertain. We have to leave something for our imagination to work on otherwise really, what are we good for? And where’s the fun? For anything that you can’t draw on real experience, the power of the mind is a wonderful thing. And, believe it or not, it uses your experiences to help you anyway.
landscape of egyptIleandra’s working on another Egyptian sequence right now. Beyond Googling and Wiki and travel blogs, she’s never been anywhere near the country. But she’s been to a beach before, meaning she knows what sand feels like. A geology degree curtsey of Da Shared Brain tells her what limestone looks and feels like. What fish tastes like. What dirty air smells like. What cinnamon, cumin and saffron smell and taste like.
Do you see where I’m going with this?

Yes. Write what you know, but occasionally step back to realise that you know a hell of a lot more than you think you do.

A Brief Interlude – (& I Haz No Planz )

So… today I (or at least Da Shared Brain) am off for a LARP. We’ve talked about it here enough times for you to know what it is. If you’re new, then think of cross country theatre. That’s the best (and funniest) description I’ve heard it given. A stage show out in the woods with no stage, no script and props you’re allowed to hit people with. ^_^

The last time I came back from this event I made a pit stop in Boots during the train journey back, having realised that I was probably without a doubt pregnant.

This event there will be none of that. Promise. Just a good time.

Right. As I said last week, I’m not properly here. I’m (soon to be) at a LARP. In light of this there are no goals. I could give you a round up of what I’ve done prior to today, but it seems a bit pointless when, at this moment I’m probably trying to wedge clothes, a staff, a sword and plenty of bedding into a car. So there we go.

I’ll be back properly next Thursday.

Peace.

So What IS It About Zombies? (& Mah Plans 07/07)

Having enjoyed talking about The Matrix trilogy so very much I reminded myself just how much I enjoy films. As a result I filled the gaps in my collection and spent four glorious evenings watching films from the Resident Evil franchise (after doing all my work for the day of course).

Umbrella Corporation logoBased on the games of the same name, this set of (currently) five films follows Alice, a security officer who used to work for the Umbrella Corporation, a mega huge pharmaceutical company that also dabbles in biotechnology and viral weaponry (of course). While working for them, Alice sees Umbrella bring about the zombie apocalypse and pretty much end the world as we know it, when a strain of one of their viruses (the T-Virus) escapes their facility in Raccoon City.

It’s good stuff. It really is and well worth watching the first one, even if you don’t make it through the rest of the series.

I watched the first film (released in 2002) because I’d heard a lot about the games. By the time Resident Evil 4 (the game) came out I was absolutely hooked to everything about the franchise, games and films.

Michael jackson thriller zombie - clipartBut what is it about zombies? Those slow, flesh eating, finger twitching denizens of the undead? They’re so much less graceful and attractive than their vampire counterparts.

I wish I knew, but as I look through my film collection I can’t help but notice just how many zombie films I have.

  • All five Resident Evil films
  • 28 Days Later
  • 28 Weeks Later
  • Zomebieland
  • Shaun of the Dead (yes it does count!)

And that’s far more than I have vampire films and these are, supposedly, my favoured creature of the night.

Over the next few months I’m going to spend some time figuring out just what it is about zombies that people find so attractive. It’s certainly not their looks, but there are many different aspects to zombies that I think will be interesting to delve into the same way I have with vampires. Who knows, if I do enough digging around I may find myself wanting to pick apart the zombie tropes and remake them the same way I did with vampires in SORB. Hmm… we’ll see.

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipartAs Raven mentioned last week I’m off to a LARP on Thursday. These means that four days out of seven this week I’ll be unable to work. Hell, I won’t even have a phone signal for two of those four. *shrugs* It’s never bothered me before, but it does mean that I won’t be able to pound away at the keyboard quite as much as I have been in past weeks.

Let’s see….

Last Week

Continue to write, on average 2000 words per working day (at least five days) on WTRE
Yup. At the time of writing I’ve written 18,740 words and I’m nearing the finish line of the whole novel. If I’m on track I should finish the whole thing this month.

Look at the freebies I intend to give away on the solo website and pick one to get ready
Yep. Got one. Again, like Raven, it needs a bit of work before I’m happy to let it go. Just because it’s free to you doesn’t mean I should take less care over it.

This Week

  1. Continue to write, on average 2000 words per working day (this week, that’s three days) on WTRE
  2. Properly outline the parallel time line aspect of WTRE so it’s ready to write when the main storyline is done
  3. Update the WTRE page of this blog to better reflect its current state
  4. Enjoy the hell out of my LARP! Squeeeeeeee!

There. What I want to add to this list is things like ‘pack my bag, check my ears, find my crystal headband, test my tent, wipe down my sword, loop my sword belt,’ but none of that is related to writing so maybe not.

I guess I’ll make a separate list for that in my own head and get on with it that way.

Promise, when I get back, I’ll have tales of my LARP adventures just like I used to (here, here, here and here). And, all being well, there may even be some pictures… like that one! *points further up*

Getting A (or The Right) Reaction #IllyTips

Working on Walking The Razor’s Edge has given me a lot to think about. It’s a bigger novel than Silk Over Razor Blades in that there’s more action than what’s going on with Lenina. I haven’t yet decided if there should be scenes beyond her POV (outside of the usual parallel timeline ones) but I am writing them to see how they fit (just like I did with SORB. Shame that none of them made it into the final cut).

The fact that there are so many characters involved means I have to think outside Lenina’s head. This is harder than I thought it would be especially when I try to keep things true to life. Well… as true as they can be in a vampire novel.

Take these examples.

You own a car. You keep it on your drive. One morning you go outside just in time to see a complete stranger climb in, help himself to the keys which you (stupidly) left in the ignition and drive off.
That’s stealing, right? You call the police, you give them your reg, you sit by the phone waiting for the call that says they’ve found your stolen vehicle.

All make sense? Okay… but how about we scale that back a bit and look at it from a slightly different point of view:

You’re five. You own an awesome blue car that your mother got you for your last birthday. You keep it in your toybox. One morning you go downstairs and find your cousin playing with it even though he didn’t ask you or tell you about his plans. You try to take it back, but your mother slaps your wrist and tells you to share.
Angry and confused you play with something else, though the whole time you do, you wait for your cousin to drop said car so you can put it safely back in your toybox. After all… it’s not his car.

Do you see where I’m going with this yet?

No? Okay… how about this:

You’re on a bus and you see a couple of twelve year olds, complete with book bags and school uniforms push and shove to get on first. The woman next to you chuckles, tuts and returns to whatever book she’s reading.

At the next stop two teenagers, probably about seventeen years old do something similar only this time the woman next to you glares at them and mutters something about ‘rowdy teenagers not respecting their elders.’

At the stop following that, a tiny old woman with a one of those trailing cart things shoves her way to the front of the line and then carefully, painfully slowly makes her way up the steps while the people she dislodged mutter and groan. The woman beside you leaps off her seat and holds out her hand to the little lady and even offers up her seat.

There different people all doing the same thing. But the reaction from those around them is completely different dependant on their age.

The point I’m trying to make is that if we, as writers, are trying to report truth and ‘real life’ with our words, then it’s important to remember what’s happening around our characters as well as what’s happening to our characters.

If Lenina is feeling grumpy because she’s yet to feed, her vampire Master will probably understand that and cut her a bit of slack. Her brother, on the other hand, who has no idea why she’s grumpy will probably tell her to get a grip and stop being such a bitch. A stranger on the road who sees her irritated expression might well cross the street to steer clear of whatever sort of trouble might be brewing.
Three very different reactions to exactly the same thing, but all valid. Each of them serves to provide a picture of the relationship (or lack of) each character has with Lenina and in turn also gives a sense of the environment.

This isn’t something I paid much attention to before WTRE and I’m sad about that. I feel like I’ve missed out on a lot of opportunities there.

Needless to say, going forward I’ll be paying a hell of a lot more attention to these things in future. It can only help to flesh out the world I’m trying to create and that is a good thing however you look at it. 🙂

Do YOU Watch Porn? – (& I Haz Planz 03/07)

Well? Do you?
I know people don’t normally talk about such things but after my blow out last week and various rants I thought I’d lighten the tone a bit. Or… y’know… muck it up a bit. :-p

So… do you?
Why are people so ashamed of it? If not for the porn industry I doubt very much that the internet would be such an amazing tool. And don’t sit there and tell me that the internet is about sharing information and learning and communication.
I know that. Of course it is. But it’s also a means for those of us who wish to, to get their rocks off to all manner of suitably naughty things. I think this song explains it better than I do:

By the way, though the animation is from WoW (I think) the song itself is from the stage show Avenue Q. It’s freakin’ AWESOME and, if you get a chance to see it, make sure that you do. It’s a laugh a minute, I promise you.

Right, now we have that cleared up.
What is it about porn that makes people get so twitchy? And I don’t mean those very simple old wives tales about going blind if you masturbate or God killing puppies. I mean people stashing their dirty magazines under the bed so they won’t be found, or lining their DVD cases with fake covers so the true one with naked boobs and arse on it can’t be seen by the causal observer.

I don’t have any porn, I-
No… hang on, that’s a complete lie. A friend of mine who used to worn in ‘adult websites’ gave me a DVD once. 3D porn. I shit you not. It was comical; I had to watch it, but the most 3D aspect about it was the floating bubbles in the bubble bath scene. The rest of it… rubbish.
But aside from that I don’t have any porn- no, hang on… still lying.
I have some hentai stuff. o.O
I had an anime phase while I was at uni and I bought this DVD box set in HMV. At the time I didn’t think anything of the weird look I got from the man who served me, but then I took them home and watched them. … Holy hell, but when they say ‘adult material enclosed’ they aren’t kidding! Would you believe me if I told you that I didn’t know what it was when I bought it? I didn’t. Honestly. Hand on heart. I had no idea. I was so naive back then. :-p

Wow, okay. Realising that has just made every point I was going to talk about completely invalid. The 3D porn is stuffed at the bottom of a drawer underneath the underwear I don’t wear any more and the anime box set is hiding behind Ileandra’s Katherine Kerr books. -_-

Moving on!

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipartOne week (ish) into the new month and so far it’s been pretty slow. But… in an effort to keep up my ‘good’ habits, this is what’s been going on.”

Last Week…

~Stop checking my email every two hours for answers from Breathless Press.
Eeerm. Every six hours. I guess that’s better though. At least I’m not lingering over my inbox waiting for something instead of getting other work done.

~Complete at least 1,500 words of deep edits on ‘Eric & Morgan’.
Oops. I didn’t even look at this. Well… I looked at the pages. -_-

~Pull together my ‘Meeting Master’ short story for placement on solo website as a freebie
Okay, with this, I was going to, honest, but it needs work. I’m not happy with it. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean I should let it go before I’m happy with it. So that’s what I’m going to tackle this week.

This Week

  1. Keep email checks down to twice a day only.
  2. Complete at least 1,500 words of deep edits on ‘Eric & Morgan’
  3. Make the changes I want to make on my ‘Meeting Master’ short story and prepare it for download

There. Now… I have a LARP next week so I’m not sure what my posts will be like yet. I’ll probably schedule something in so you don’t miss me too much. Whatever happens there will be something here from me on Thursday and Saturday next week, but probably a little diversion from our usual scheduling. Hope that’s too disappointing. 😉

Laterz!
