The Lull…

Christmas. Ace. ^_^

Good food. Good company. Fun and games (not literally; I need a different crowd for that). My mum and sister came by (last minute invitation to ‘big day dinner’ and, of course, there’s still a TONNE of food left. Mostly turkey now. We only bought a crown, but Mum showed up with a whole chicken and a bunch of other stuff, so we’ll be eating that for a while yet.

Anyone know how to make curry?

As I suspected I’ve done crap all work. It’s nice though. Not restful (I’m SO tired right now), but giving my brain a break has been nice. What’s better than that is that on Christmas Eve I received the first of three royalty transfers from Amazon. ^_^ It’s a tiny amount – like I said, it’s not going to pay any bills – but I’m so, so pleased because it’s proof that people are reading my words. Or that they’re downloading them at least. They might not be reading them, but downloading the story is a start, right?

I’ve not got much to add this week. I figure in this small lull between Christmas and New Year, there isn’t too much to add. By this time next week however, it will be 2014 and you’ll have a whole new posting schedule to look forward to, as well as the usual round up of the year just gone by.

I’m quite looking forward to that, actually.

Stay merry, drink loads, and I’ll catch up with you soon.

Merry Christmas 2013 ^_^

I found the cutest piece of clipart for today’s Christmas message. Look at him!

Cute, ain’t he?

I’m not going to stick around much; I have more presents to open with the boys and some cooking to start.

But I wanted to wish you all a very, merry Christmas. However you celebrate (and even if you don’t) enjoy the good wishes of the day from all of us here at WACWI (that’s what we call the blog for short!)

Mah Goals – wc 23/12

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!!!

So close! Soooooo close! I’m never normally excited about it, but this year is different. I don’t know why. There is a ridiculous pile of presents hiding in the study and yes, while they’re all (mostly) for the boys, I can’t help but stare at them and think ‘wheeeeeee!’ And of course looking at the decorations. We’ve put them in the kitchen this year; the safer to keep them away from grabbing, grubby fingers. I think it will be a while before we’re able to have a tree anywhere near where the boys can get to it. *shrugs* Meh. It’s still pretty.

So… yesterday! Yesterday was the Funk Master’s birthday and I treated him (eventually) but getting up early with the boys and letting him skate. I did subsequently run off the skate (which was great, by the way), but that’s okay. He didn’t mind. In the evening we went to see The Hobbit; The Desolation of Smaug. ^_^ His idea, by the way, not mine! :-p

Line drawing, tattoo style, black and white dragon from open clip art.

No, this isn’t Smaug, but it is a cute little dragon, isn’t it?

The film was excellent. I’m torn between frothing at the mouth over how beautiful it was and how irritated I am at how much of it was changed/removed/added/completely FUBAR-ed just to spin out the franchise with two films longer than it really should have had. I mean… yes… a lot of things shown did happen, but they are outside the story; you’ll find the events, if you care to look, detailed in the various appendixes of Lord Of The Rings. Not in The Hobbit which was a considerably smaller book. *tears hair* I think… in the end, I’ll just have to except that I enjoyed it, because it was freaking awesome, and get over the fact that it really is based LOOSELY on JRR Tolkien’s work.

Sigh… anyway…!

Last Week

I think it got a bit hammered but the Christmas season early because I didn’t do as much as I was hoping last week. I met the major goals, but there are still a couple of gaps, y’know?

Get the last transcript done. Draw a line under it, baby!.
Finished! The project is over! WHEEEEEEE! Just need to send off my last batch of invoices and it’s done, done, done! Phew!

Check daily for paid gubbins.
Mostly daily. But even if I didn’t manage daily I still got some done and drew down a smidge of cash on Friday. Very handy for last minute shopping. So that’s all good. And, since I’m still in a good mood I won’t talk about how eBay and PayPal combined cocked up my accounts from taking money when they shouldn’t have. *shakes fist*

Finish draft of ‘Bill’ (I’m not far off, I should be able to do that).
Done. Started the ‘Eric & Morgan’ too, so I’m further ahead than I thought I would be. Strictly speaking that’s one of Raven’s goals, but I’ll take about it here just the same.

Start re-reading Slippers & Chains to decide what needs to happen next.
Another of Raven’s goals. Read. Straight through from start to finish. The fact that once we started it was hard to stop reading is a good sign. It means that we’re still hooked on the story and interested in the characters, even after the break. That will need some editing now.

Take a look at just desserts story (working title I Need A Break) and make general notes about editing plans.
I’ve looked at it. I can use it, thankfully, it just needs some hammering. Quite a bit of hammering actually. But I should be able to get it in a decent state by Jan 15 for the competition. *fingers crossed*

Leave SORB alone! Don’t change it, don’t mess with it, nothing!
Still managing it. Heh, easiest goal ever! ^_^

Goals For This Week

Hmm. Checking back against my goals for the month it seems I’ve done everything I wanted to do except for the ‘enjoy Christmas’ part. So… I guess I’ll add in some extra things to keep my ticking over.

  • Start real work on ‘I Need A Break’ rather than just thinking about it.
  • Check daily for paid work.
  • Make rough list of what I want to achieve in 2014 in preparation for goal reassessment
  • Continue working on ‘Eric & Morgan’ at least 500 words
  • Leave SORB alone! Don’t change it, don’t mess with it, nothing!
  • ENJOY CHRISTMAS!

There. That should keep my busy. My sister will be by at the end of the week and there will be comings and goings from Dave’s family as well. Looking forward to all of it; it’s going to be awesome.

For all you fine people… have a good Christmas and I’ll catch you again before the year ends.

Presents n Thanks n Junk

clip art christmas tree from OpenClipArtChristmas next week. By the time you hear from me next the ‘big day’ would have come and gone. And we’ll be looking forward to the new year. Woo.

I get more excited about New Year as an event, than Christmas. Not that I don’t love my kids dearly, but I think Ileandra (the soppy side of me) is far more into what the day means for us and the young ones. She’ll tell you all about it, I’m sure.

However… I like getting presents. Doesn’t everyone?

So far I’ve given myself a couple of great presents in the form of Bo Burnham’s CD special, a shrug from TPF Faerie Wear and a few days off. I didn’t do anything yesterday. In fact, I sat in bed while the Funk Master took the boys out and watched YouTube. I freakin’ love YouTube!

But it’s not the presents I’ve bought for myself that I’m enjoying the most. Or even the presents that Funk Master will be getting me (oh, if you’re curious about what that nickname is all about, you really must remind me to tell you about it one day – but not now). The presents I’m enjoying most are the ones from you guys.

I never expected to publish before Ileandra, even through self-publishing means, nor did I expect it to go so well. Since making my crazy announcement last week, downloads of Vicki & Lara have gone mad. It’s still not going to pay any bills, but that’s not the point. I stand by what I said; I draw my pleasure from knowing that people enjoy what I do and by sharing it with as many of you as I can.

So there we go.

That’s my present this year; having published, in any form, and seen downloads from people who are total strangers to me. It’s validation of my obsession with scribbling words that is the sort of gift I couldn’t go out and buy for myself.

Ugh, okay. That’s the soppy crap done.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the Christmas decorations Ileandra made a couple of years ago. These things are amazing and she gives a step by step guide on how to make them. They’re so easy that I may even make a couple myself. Hell, I should be better at it than she is. :p

What will you guys be doing for Christmas? It’s been a little quiet around here. Going home for the holidays?

Let me finish up, today with one of the few Christmas songs that doesn’t piss the hell out of me.

Guest Blog: The Release of Great Aunt Sally’s Meatloaf into The Universe

My jam tarts, photo by me!

My mince pies... photo by me!I’ve been doing a lot of baking recently. Lord knows why… cakes and mince pies and all sorts of things that makes any sort of weight-loss regime an impossibility to maintain. Hehee.

But that ties in really nicely with today’s guest post because my recipes are hardly that. I kinda, sorta mulch things together and end up with something that’s usually edible and tasty (I’m lucky like that). But it does make me wonder if my ‘experiments’ would be less hit and miss if I used a recipe.

Anyway, here’s Nick Baron. ^_^

*/*\*

Great Aunt Sally would be so proud. You are finally going to put into print the recipe for the most mouth-watering loaf of wonderful beef and finely chopped vegetables. Swept away on a cloud of nostalgia, you float through memories that conjure up each ingredient. You can smell the onions. You can see the bright orange bits of carrot and fresh green peppers being cut by your aunt’s capable hands. With your chest puffed up with pride, you hand the list of inspired elements to your bespectacled niece Brittany, who has volunteered to be your typist. Brittany prances out of the room only to return a few moments later with her laptop in her hand. She turns the monitor towards you. You see on the screen your worst nightmare! Your beloved aunt’s recipe, exact in every proportion, available in a downloadable copy of the 1936 edition of The Joy of Cooking published by Irma S. Rombauer. As you collapse into your chair, crushed and in shock, your niece is already pecking away again at the keyboard.

5 Heaping Scoops of Inward Workings
“Lists of ingredients, as in recipes or formulas, are not eligible for copyright,” Brittany paraphrases from an article. However, your dashed hopes are now cautious suspicions. That person is not a lawyer, you think to yourself. Though she makes no claims to telepathic powers, Brittany is already at the website for the United States Copyright Office before you can say a word. Based on your humble interpretation, it seems that the proprietary element of a recipe is the description or the directions. Those ingredients reflect no creative expression, but the commentary or directions may be protected. Your risk of being sued is probably low, but still possible if your directions are too close to the original.

A Small Pinch of “What’s the Point?”
Now you know that Belinda B. Doolittle, the only sister of your dear mum, did not invent the delightful meatloaf recipe. What is the point of trying to write it down? This sentiment you voice aloud before your uncanny sidekick can read your mind again. Brittany looks at you over her trendy purple plastic frames.

“The point is, to share the recipe. You were never going to write a whole book anyway.” Young people think they are so smart nowadays! Yes, you were never writing a cookbook. You are not copying from the book, and you wrote the ingredients in your own words. Brittany sashays back to the office and zips off a copy. You enter the room at her call and look over her shoulder.

The Finishing Touches
Though you do not see any of the telltale squiggly red or green lines that indicate spelling or grammar errors, you know better. Your mother-in-law zeroes in on errors like a heat-seeking missile. She would definitely find something to criticize. You work for Grammarly, a proofreading service. You have seen even the most educated authors make mistakes if they do not use proofing tools. Sure enough, the absence of a squiggly line does not indicate the absence of an error. Brittany has a great time helping you to correct your twelve mistakes. With the click of a mouse, the printer is churning out 15 copies of Great Aunt Sally’s Not-so-Secret Meatloaf recipe to be distributed at the next family dinner.

Ready to Serve!
If you have always had the secret hope of publishing your own cookbook, let me save you the emotional rollercoaster ride. You can do it! Make sure that the recipe descriptions are original. The organization, or composition, of the cookbook also needs to be unique. However, do not assume that a secret family recipe is not an already-published, well-known recipe. Chances are that your ancestors too owned a cookbook!

Heh, maybe it’s years of cooking from my mother’s before me passed down through my braaaaaaaaaaaain! :p Thanks for stopping by, Nick!
