What Is A Critique Group?

Notice how my posts tend to be titled with questions recently? That’s because things keep happening to and around me that make me question everything. It’s not a bad thing, I hasten to add. My part of this blog is to share experiences with you (while Raven just wants to tease you and chat about sex – meh). I honestly feel that it’s important to share and I can tell you, hand on heart, that I would not have been able to achieve the things I have without learning from other people’s mistakes. Anyway… that’s why. So don’t be surprised if the next couple of posts from me have a theme.

Anyway. Critique groups.

I’m a member of a fabulous critique group. I’ve mentioned them before and will do so often, not to brag about what I’ve done, but to highlight how grateful I am for what they’ve done for me.

Phoenix Writers BannerThe Phoenix Writers, operating out of The Phoenix in the cultural quarter of Leicester City has been my writing home since 2010. I’ve seen members come and go (mostly come and stay!) and, as a direct result of reading my work to them and hearing the work of others, my skills of improved at a rate I can’t even begin to measure.

So What is a Critique Group?

It might be easier if I start with what a critique group is not. A critique group is not:

  • A place for you to show off
  • A place to get your ego stroked
  • A place to go to stroke other people’s egos
  • A place in which anybody should be fearful that they aren’t good enough
  • A place where you compete against each other (unless of course you’ve organised a friendly competition amongst yourselves that serves a purpose)

Naturally one might feel intimidated at times among their peers. I certainly do. When I read for the group my work and Raven’s work comes out of one mouth, for obvious reasons. As a writer of genre fiction I am actually in a minority, in that many others of the group write fiction that is outwardly perceived (not by members of the group, mind you, but by civilians [non members]) as higher quality, better class or generally superior to mine. I take my own insecurities to that group with me and whether or not they have any basis in fact, I deal with that as and when.

But! Even with that going on in my mind I still go. I go because the Phoenix Writers gives me:

  • Kind, honest, thoughtful and PRODUCTIVE feedback on ALL of my writing
  • Support
  • Encouragement
  • A network of like minded people who get what it is like to do something you love that few people on the outside can ever really understand
  • A dozen laughs a minute

There are plenty of other things I get from my critique group but I don’t have time to list them all. Those five points are the foremost in my mind because they are the most important.

What Does A Critique Group Do?

In my mind, any and all critique groups should do what I’ve described above. However, if you want a specific explanation, then it is this:

A critique group should provide a safe and friendly environment in which ANY writer from ANY genre should be able to meet with others to GIVE AND RECEIVE constructive criticism on their work.
~Quote: Me

That is the core of a critique group.

Raven has already talked about some of the experiences we’ve had, from her point of view, some of which fly in the face of that highlighted block of text. But I assure you now that those experiences are in the minority.

Green and orange figures sitting at a desk (from openclipart)A critique group is there to help you. Support you. Nurture your skills. Some offer teaching while others focus just on critique and feedback. Some cater to specific genres while others are broad and far reaching. Some run workshops, competitions and regularly put together collections of members’ writings. Others simply meet in a coffee shop for an hour once a fortnight to read out their work.

There are lots of variations to the theme but that highlighted block of text is key.

Should YOU Join A Critique Group?

If, like me, you’re looking to publish (traditionally or self-publication) and don’t always have the funds to finance in depth, professional, developmental edits, then yes. God, yes!

Regularly reading your work to a bunch of other people will yank into the open plenty of issues that you may have missed with your text. After a time, your eye becomes blind to what is on the page and you need someone else to look at it with you. A critique group will do this with you and they will do it without stomping on you. A good group will do it without sugar-coating AND without making you feel like an idiot for describing a character as blonde and blue eyed in one chapter and brunette in another.

If you’re just writing for fun…? A critique group can still be useful. Writing can be such a lonely activity; you put yourself in a bubble and spend a lot of time in there with your own thoughts. Reminding yourself that you aren’t alone by going out and regularly meeting with others doing the same can be what keeps writing fun, rather than laborious and boring.

Anyway those are my thoughts on the matter. What about you guys? Are you a member of a critique group? What is it like? Are you looking for a group or gathering of people to chat to about writing? More than that, do you disagree with any of the points above? I’m curious to know if these are just my views or if other folk out there have a similar opinion on what critique groups are actually for.

I Haz Planz – wc 30/01

Ugh. Sorry it’s late. Ileandra has been editing like a lunatic and, funnily enough, that influences what I do here. Go figure. 😉

I’m tired and hungry and slightly moody, so I’ll keep this one brief.

Last week
~Learn how to put make up on!
No. Just no. I need to do it, but I’ve been putting it off because I dislike make up just on principle. I’m told (by reliable folks) that professional author shots should be done with a lil bit of make up if you’re a girl (grr) but since the shoot has been put off, I can put off this step. Maybe I’ll rebel and not do it at all. Who knows.

~Start reading Literal Fantasies
Finished it too. Review will be up on Saturday 8th, so keep your eyes peeled for that if you’re curious about what I think.

~Finish last story in Meeting Each Other series
Well that was a bit of a cock up. I’ve already done that! Ah well. Stupid brain. -_-

~Prepare last niggling bits for launch of ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’ (I have a present for you in that regard. Be sure to stop by on Saturday evening!)
Done. We’re ready! The piece should be available on Smashwords, Amazon (UK, US and CA) and Kobo tomorrow. If you haven’t picked up your ‘thank you’ copy from Smashwords, do that before the voucher code runs out. Seriously… hurry up; you’ve probably got about 36 hours until it goes poof. *sprinkles faerie dust*

~Draft outline of next in Slippers & Chains series (Second Base)
Nope. I blame Ileandra for monopolising our shared brain. It’s all been about that bloody vampire novel she’s working on. As if my work isn’t important too! Though I am published now… I guess that puts me ahead of the game somewhat. Still… hoping to do better this week.

This Week
Right. Let’s get back on track!

  • Complete deep edits on ‘Bill’ and get it ready to send out to betas.

  • Choose February’s indie book to review (and start reading)

  • Draft outline of next in Slippers & Chains series (Second Base)

There we go. Also… voting is still open on how I’ll publish Slippers & Chains in the first instance. Do you want downloadable audio files or videos like the ones here? Vote now!

You’ve got another three weeks before I close that poll and get on with producing whatever it is you’ve picked.

Cheers! Have a good week, see you in February.Raven's Signature In Black

Mah Goals – wc 27/01

I had a mad day yesterday. Assessments with my Roller Derby team. I didn’t pass, but I did do a bunch of cool stuff that I’d never done before. That combined with working on existing skills has left me sore and delicate this morning. But happy. So very, very happy!

Happy Monday, friends. I hope you can all say the same about your Monday and your upcoming week. 🙂

Last Week

Finish my read of SORB and construct timeline/diagram to show series of events, as things are a little muddled in my head
Read through done! After letting my thoughts and comments simmer for a day or two I started the second pass; what I call ‘deep edits.’ This requires making good on the notes I made, changing things and rewritting sections. I remain fascinated at how clean that first draft is proving to be (probably because I’ve written the damn thing so many times before!). It means that I don’t need to change all that much in terms of the basic prose, but the detail, historical accuracy and filling in those plot holes I mentioned; I can focus on those instead. My last pass, before handing the text to beta readers will be transferring all my changes from the hard copy back into Scrivener, making the last few tweaks as I go. SO EXCITED!

Finalise what I plan to wear for the photoshoot
Yeeees… but the shoot has been bumped back to February. More my fault than anything else, but at least this way I should have some help with the boys and therefore a more relaxed shoot with Grace. Fingers crossed.

Start in depth research into aspects of ancient history relevant to SORB (no spoilers, but if you like Egyptians, you’ll like this!)
Cleopatra. Antony. The Roman Republic. The Battle of Waterloo. All important features in Silk Over Razor Blades and I know a hell of a lot more about them now than I did before. Who knew this level of research into real historical events was required for a novel featuring vampires. o.O

Draft in depth outline of WTRE (I know it’s FAR earlier than anticipated, but why wait if I can start writing sooner?)
Done. I even did an outlike for OAKE too. ^_^ I know, I know, working ahead of the game, but I got so excited over the idea of finishing the trilogy. I just kept writing and writing! Now I have full, clear ideas of exactly what each book is trying to achieve and where it’s going. Hell, the end of OAKE even leaves space for future books if you guys are interested enough to convince me to take it on. That fact, in of itself, is enough to put a HUGE smile on my face.

This Week

  • Complete ‘deep edits’ on at least 150 pages of SORB text
  • Continue reading my indie book for January (The Last Dragon Slayer by Martyn Stanley).
  • Enter two of the competitions that close on 31 January (I haven’t talked about these with you guys, but meeting with my Subs Group has given me a nudge; I need to get back on that horse)
  • Start populating solo site with bare content to test functionality and layout

There. Writing goals sorted.

It’s nearly the end of the month guys! Can you believe it’s gone by so very fast?! Part of me wants to curl up in a corner and wait for the world to stop spinning (my boys are nearly two for crying out loud!) but the rest of me is so keen to do all these things I have planned and write all these novels that I can’t get through the days fast enough.

A very confusing blend of emotions there.

I hope you all have a fantastic week and I’ll catch you on Saturday for my weekend post. 🙂

Pre Launch and Cover Reveal

I’M SO EXCITED I COULD WET MYSELF!

But I won’t. Promise. How gross!

HOWEVER! I have reason to be excited because today marks the soft launch of the next story in the Meeting Each Other Series; ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’!

I say soft launch because this is the easiest way to give you guys a first look at the story at a discount price (you know… free! ^_^). I would contact each of you in turn and hand out this little pressie but that’s harder and there’s no guarantee I’d reach you all. So this is my solution.

First… the cover. *drum roll*

Carol, Niall & Lin ebook cover

YEY!

Ain’t it purdy? I continue to be thrilled with my cover designer, Jo, and the speed with which she works. I’d also like to thank her for putting up with my constant CWJs (‘Can we just…?’). She’s not happy until I am and that means a great deal.

I mentioned that I’ll be giving this book to you guys for free. That is true. In a similar manner to ‘Vicki & Lara’ I’ll be issuing a discount code enabling you to gain 100% off the cover price over at Smashwords. DO NOT try to find this book on Amazon; it isn’t there yet. I can’t list it for free without leaping through all sorts of hoops, but if you need a .mobi version of the file you can still get it at Smashwords. For the rest of you who need .epub files, you can get those too.

The discount code for this pre launch period is: BP68E

Just enter that at the checkout to receive 100% off the list price of $2.49!

Before I go and skip off into the sunset for a congratulatory drink of Havana 7, let me add one thing: This code is ONLY available for the pre-launch period. That means it will expire on 1 February 2014 (probably at midnight EST). Be sure to order your book before then to ensure you receive the discounted price.

It’s my gift to you for sticking with me on this blog and supporting me. I’m deeply honoured that you would take the time to visit the blog and interact with me and this, besides screaming it from the rooftops is one of the few ways I can thank you.

If you like the book I’d be further honoured if you’d leave a review. Obviously you don’t have to and you certainly shouldn’t feel obligated too, but I would love to know what you think here, on Smashwords or anywhere else you manage to find this book. It would mean a great deal to me.

Right. That’s my lot. Rum awaits and probably an episode of American Dad. Because that’s how I roll.

Right, Let’s Write. The Right Way

thinking boy, black and white, with questions marks around his head

Credit: ryanlerch at OpenClipArt

Ileandra has talked a lot about her process. You’d imagine, since she’s my other half (haha!), that a lot of what we do happens the same way. You’d be wrong.

I am a planner.

There. I said it.

I like to plan my words. Not necessarily with rigid form from start to end, but at least an outline of the three major acts that make any great story. I just read an article in Writing Magazine (February 2014 issue) about three-act-structure which proves, yet again, that plotting a story, be it a novel, a short story, or even some flash doesn’t take the life out of it. It’s necessary.

But planning the outline of a piece of writing isn’t the only part of the planning process. There are many parts to arrange and this is where, I believe, I have an advantage over Ileandra; because much of this, she doesn’t need to do the same way as me. Yet….

I have a publication schedule. I know that the Meeting Each Other Series needs to be complete and ready for all six stories to go into a physical book by the beginning of December 2014. So I know I need to release the stories regularly between now and then.

I know I need to write them at a damn sharp pace and edit them within an inch of their lives before they go off to my betas. I need to do that, so I can make further changes based on their responses.

Then I need to proofread. I hate proofing my own work; it’s so hard to take your eye out of it far enough to spot the errors. It is important though, because I firmly believe that each typo a reader finds in one of my published works actually gives them some kind of weird anti-orgasm. As opposed to a proper orgasm from reading such delicious naughtiness. *snerk*

Once I’ve managed to do all that, the piece goes off to my editor and comes back with another round of minor tweaks before I send it for exterior proofing and formatting.

As well as this, I know that I have to take the steps required to ensure that you fine people know the books are on the way. I need to arrange teasers for you. Possible guest posts in other blogs and arrange my book cover. I need to leave time for inevitable changes when I receive the first draft of the cover and decide it needs a complete do over (as has happened this time around. Good thing my designer is an absolute diamond).

Green Moods ...But this is the most important aspect of writing the right way. It’s not just about getting words on the page. You can’t edit a blank page, yes, but once you have that page filled with black and white text, you need to nurture it and prune it into a shape you like. Think topiary.

You’re not going to get a wicked dolphin or car shaped bush without picking up the shears and hacking at it, are you?

Heh… I like that.

How do you guys handle writing? What’s your ‘right process?’ Does it have more steps or less than mine? Do you have any tips for me? I’m always open to that. Chat back, peeps, you know I love it.
