Do You Like Presents?

Purple present from OpenClipartGood morning lovers!

Everyone likes presents. Gifts. Free stuff. Isn’t that one of the reasons why folk get away with releasing multiple version of the same film on DVD, so that those who care can have the special editions with all the lovely extras inside? I’m one of those people by the way. Very much so.

Well, today I want to know what you think of bonus material.

I mentioned on Thursday that the Meeting Each Other series is coming near its end and that I need to think about what delicious extras to give you. I know Ileandra has also talked about this stuff in brief, but her work is a little different to mine, meaning the style of extras is likely to be different.

So… in a collection of short stories or even in a novel what sort of extras do you like to see?

Easy. ^_^ Just pick the options that apply the most. You can pick as many or as few as you like. I’ll keep the poll open until the end of the year and collate the answers afterwards. Hopefully there should be some interesting results. 🙂

Just a quickie from me today. I have a meet with the Phoenix Writers in a couple of hours and it’s been so long since I was last there I need to gear myself up for it.

Catch you on Thursday!

Almost There – (& I Haz Planz 09/10)

Yes, I know, it’s another break from my why I write erotica series, but I just had to do this first. There are some things I need to say to you all.

Purple present from OpenClipartFirst, my competition didn’t get nearly enough uptake to make it as fair as I’d like. I’m sorry about that. If you entered by following all the criteria I apologise to you the most. I’ll find another way to make it up to you and give you the chance to win some goodies at a later date.

Second, ‘Eric & Morgan’ releases tomorrow. It’s been on pre-order for a couple of weeks and now it’s ready for general sale. It’s the fourth tale in my Meeting Each Other Series and I’m so excited I could almost choke. Never in a million years did I imagine I would get this far.

I’m so happy that I’m putting together a little ‘celebrate with me’ present that will be issued to all newsletter subscribers early tomorrow morning (8am GMT). If you want to be in on that, you’ve got some time to sign up to the newsletter to make sure you have access. Otherwise you can find the story on Amazon and Smashwords.

The next is a present for all of you general blog folk. Just something small as a kind of ‘thank you’ for supporting me through all of it.

Quote art banner

I love quote art. Picking out a single line that speaks to me in a way that captures the essence or a particular theme of the story. This in particular, so simple, just makes me shiver with happy. ^_^

Lastly, since I’m nearing the end of the series, it’s time to think about print versions and bonus material. Either this Saturday or next week I’ll be asking you what sort of bonus material you would like to see in compilation ebooks and print collections (since that’s kinda what it’s going to be in loose terms). I’ll make it simple, a few questions on a survey, that sort of thing and keep it live for a month or two.

There. That’s my lot. Thanks for bearing with me. x

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

One week into October and it’s going to be a little bit crazy. I can feel it in my bones. Da Shared Brain is talking about talking on a bunch of extra work in the form of kickstarting her radio show and while that would be great for Ileandra and I, I worry for her sanity. Anyway…

Last Week

book and reading light form openclipart.com~Choose October’s book to read and review. Start reading.
Yup. Tis a good’un. You’ll see I’ve already sorted out the books for the rest of the year too, so if you’re curious check out the Book Challenge page.

~Prepare to complete at least 10 pages of edits for Slippers & Chains IF email arrives by Sunday. Complete 5 pages if email arrives after that.
The piece arrived on Tuesday but I have managed to work through 25 pages. I think I overestimated the level of changes required at this point, so I can relax a little in that regard. I should be able to meet the deadline of next week to complete this second round of edits.

~Read current outline for Slippers & Chains: Second Base and make notes
Yep. I’ve changed where I had the story starting originally and smoothed out some of the potential plot bumps. Frankly put I’m ready to begin writing now.

a pen and a pencilThis Week

  1. Complete deep edits at least 1,500 words of ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’
  2. Complete checks on second pass of edits issued by Breathless Press for Slippers & Chains

Aaaaaaaaand that’s my lot! Thanks guys. Muchos love-os! 😉

I Wanna Bounce! (& Mah Plans – 06/10)

BalleOoooh yeah! I wanna bounce, bounce, bounce, until my butt is sore. o.O

Okay, that came out a bit weird, but what I mean is, I want to do a blog hop. Or blog bounce. Whatever you want to call it. I want to spread the word about Silk Over Razor Blades’ release and I want you fine people to be involved.

Will you help me?
blog bounce banner
I’m running the hop between December 1 and December 7 – I figure seven days is more than enough time to bounce around a few blogs and say hi. Any more than that and we run the risk of getting bored, so nice and steady is the key.

I’m looking for bloggers, like yourselves, willing to host a post form me on their blog during that time. I’m willing to answer interview questions, write up character bios, write posts on my writing process or go through a general Q&A on the book itself. I really don’t mind, it’s your blog, I’m just a guest there. 😉

If you’re interested, I’d be super-duper grateful if you’d visit this form and fill it in so I can get in contact with you.

This is such an exciting time, I can’t think of anything better than sharing it with as much of you as possible.

For the moment I’m just gathering names, but nearer the time I’ll be able to provide cover art, the full press release and any other bit of information yoopenclip art - money, notes and coinsu’d like. I’m also offering review copies to everyone who takes part! And, even better, when the blog is over, I‘ll put the names of all my kind hosts into a hat and draw one name to win a $10/£10 Amazon voucher as my way of saying thank you. Not too shabby, eh?

So… what are you waiting for? Fill in the form, lend me your support and help me celebrate SORB’s release with the biggest bang we can manage. ^_^line break, swirling graphics, from openclipartOctober is here. Woo. Feels like last week was a loooooooong one, but now that we’re here, it’s time for the round up.
Are you ready?

Last week

Approach four more blogs regarding guest posts/interviews.
Yes and no. I approached two and got a thumbs up – which was very kind, but I think I’m going about this the wrong way, hence the post above. I’m aiming for a lot of fuss with streamers and confetti and cake and singing, so the more the merrier I say.

little pink work reading a book; bookworm from OpenClipArtResearch poster opportunities in local stores/hangouts (library / city centre info desk / my various coffee shops / book stores)
Actually it’s pretty good out there. So long as you’re local, which I am. When my cover art is ready I’ll have some images that are suitable for posters and I can start putting those in the places I frequent as well as the local library. I love my library, they’re such a lovely bunch in there and I’m so glad they’re willing to help. 🙂

Check out BBC Radio Leicester for similar speaking opportunities.
They exist, but you need a hook. Something that links in to what they’re already doing to show that there may be interest. Hmm. I’ll work on that.

Find a networking event to attend in the near future
It’s the writer’s meetup tomorrow. Baby sitting opportunities permitting, I’ll be able to go to that and chat with some other local writerly types. That would be nice, it’s been a while.

Get my Goodreads account working and check it at least twice in the week
*sigh* I’m terrible when it comes to technology I’m not familiar with. The account is working now, but can I navigate through that minefield? It’s going to take time, that’s all I can say.

Outline plan for ‘subscriber zone’ on this blog and on main website
Oops. I knew I’d miss something. Aah well, maybe this week.

Spend at least two nights NOT working and combine them with EITHER an early night or a CrossFit/Roller Derby workout*
Does being horrifically ill and sleeping most of Saturday count? *sigh* I’m still waiting for results from my last hospital stay but they’re taking their time. I guess from the fact that I’ve not heard anything there’s nothing to worry about, but I can’t keep being ill like this. It’s depressing and scary. Hmm. Back to the GP I guess.

September 2014 Goal Recap

Not a bad month in terms of getting things done. Lookie, lookie!

Know who is going to produce cover art for SORB and how much it is going to cost. Have at least a faux deadline for completion of primary artwork.
Why yessss, the lovely Dave Johnson who wowed me so much at our last meet. In fact I’m looking forward to some mock-ups in the next couple of days are so. Tis going to be GRAND and subscribers get to look at the selection (and help me choose!) before the final design is made. Wanna be in on that? Better sign up quick!

blank calendar from OpenClipArtHave a clear idea of the steps I plan to take insofar as marketing (including blog tours, promotion posts, cover reveals, excerpts and social media work).
Eeyup. Getting my blog tour sorted, along with dates for cover (and poster) reveals as well as excerpts and teasers. Guess I need to start scheduling it now. 😉

Submit one existing piece (short story / flash fiction) to an appropriate (and preferably free) competition.
Yup. In fact I did two. I must have had a made week or something because I just started sending stuff off and then couldn’t stop! Not a bad thing though. No one will know I’m here unless I shout a bit, right?

Take on Phase Two of my collaborative project and find fellow conspirators (remember to check in on Saturday for more concrete details)
Aaah yes, Fab Fables. You not involved yet? You want to be? Then please, check out this post for details on how to get involved with the most exciting new project evaaaa!

waving penguin from open clipartChill the fuck out.
I’m certainly relaxing more in the evenings, if that counts. But I’m still high strung and tense with stress. Hmm. Try harder? …or does that defy the point. o.O

Goals For October 2014

Weeeeell, looking back at my goals for the rest of the year most of it is just about drafting the rest of Saar’s Legacy now. A bit of a pain because I know Raven has quite a bit of work to do for Slippers & Chains, meaning our fight over who gets to do NaNoWriMo this year is going to be quite intense. Hmm. I’ll think about that. But insofar as this month goes:

  1. Finalise hosts for blog tour and have a clear schedule of what goes when so I can start generating content
  2. Write up press release for SORB
  3. Pick final design for SORB cover art
  4. Complete edits from Karen at LionheART

Mooooooore than enough to be getting on with I’d say.

This Week

So let’s start with the easy stuff that’s simple to control:

  1. Check in with Karen regarding SORB edits
  2. Check in with Dave regarding cover art if no input by Wednesday
  3. Seek hosts for my blog bounce
  4. Outline content of SORB’s press release
  5. Spend at least two nights NOT working and combine them with EITHER an early night or a CrossFit/Roller Derby workout*

I’ll stop there. Any more than that and someone’s head will pop off their next. ^_^

Now that’s done, I’m off out. I gotta go see a doctor. 😉

D’awww, Thanks!

Sometimes I forget that people actually read my blog. I forget that every now and then something I say makes people remember me when they are done reading. Those reminders come in the form of likes, comments and blog awards.

I get some of the first, a few of the second, but the third has seen a dry spell. Until now. Thank you so much Brittany Zelkovich (have I said recently how much I LOVE your name?) for nominating me for this Lovely Blog Award.

One Lovely Blog AwardIt touched me and your timing was excellent since I – as you could probably tell from the tone of my post that day – was feeling a little blue.

So, without further ado, here’s the criteria of the award met as best as I can make it.

Da Rulez
An award like this always a set of rules that go with it, and these are they. Enjoy.

  • Thank and link to the person who nominated you
  • List the Rules, and display the award image
  • Include 7 facts about yourself
  • Nominate an additional 15 blogs, and notify them by leaving a comment on one of their posts
  • Follow the blogger who nominated you

Facts

Gemma and I in town eating churros!

No… I wasn’t ready for that photo.

One: I have a pen friend I’ve been writing to for 20 years. *nods* Her name is Gemma and she’s AWESOME and we started writing each other when we were 10. Possibly even nine. She’s one of my bestest, best friends in the entire world and I love her. And we still write snail-mail letters to each other.

Two: I have in excess of 87 cousins. No word of a lie, promise. At my Nanna’s funeral in 2012, the pastor at the service was reading ‘the stats of life’ if you’ll excuse the term and he pointed out the incredible number of grandchildren Nanna had. She also had something like 25 great-grandchildren, meaning I have a fair number of second cousins too. Now there’s a legacy to be proud of, right?

photo of my workspaceThree: I’m actually more organised and tidy than I care to admit. Since the birth of my boys, clutter and mess is just impossible to work in. So my desk pretty much looks like this all the time (though the mug changes pretty regularly).

Four: I do actually like the occasional RomCom. I know, I know, it doesn’t sound like me, but I do. Every now and then I like to watch something in which people don’t die. There are no guns or explosions. If those things can be mixed into a RomCom setting, I’d certainly watch it, but normally that’s not the case. *shrugs* Tell anyone and I’ll write you into a novel and kill ya! 😉

Five: I sing. A lot. This is a new one as I never realised how much I actually sing until Dave came downstairs one night and told me it was nice to see me in a good mood. When I asked how he knew, he said he’d heard me singing. Meep!

picture of me in hospitalSix: I’ve spent more time in hospital this year than I ever have so far in my life. I had my tonsils out when I was about five. After that I think my first stay in a hospital was when I had my boys. That’s all right. Two years on I’ve had various procedures, appointments, jabs and check-ups but still nothing major. I count that as pretty freakin lucky. In fact, I’ve never even broken a bone. *touches desk* Though with a mad sport like roller derby on my list of ‘fun things to do’ it might not be long. And that brings me neatly onto:

picture of my skatesSeven: I can skate. Pretty damn well. I’m not incredible or anything flashy, but I’m fast, stable and aggressive on track. All of which is important when there are nine other girls screaming, shoving and tugging at you. Bring it!

There. Seven facts. And different to my usual stack of facts too, which is good.

My Nominations
Okay! It’s been a while since I’ve had to do this, but these are blogs I’ve been reading recently in which I’ve found new buddies to chat to, or new things to talk about that interest me hugely.

Here we go:
~Russel Ray Photos: You always have a fantastic selection of photos to look at and your skill is phenomenal. I want folk to know about you.

~CL Mannarino: Recent posts have tied in nicely with things I’ve been thinking and feeling.  Quotes and inspirational messages that are always a pleasure to read.

~Josh Mosey: Frankly put, you’re funny. So you get nominated too.

~Cristian Mihai: Another person who probably doesn’t need any help or exposure from the likes of me, but your blog is another full of interesting thoughts and messages that I’m truly grateful you share.

~DBCII: David, your posts are great and I’m glad the April A2Z put you on my radar.

~Mandy Eve Barnett: You’re always so willing to share what you’ve learned and so supportive of other authors. This is for you too.

~Jami Gray: Great stories and interesting blog looking at urban fantasy and romance and all the crossovers they throw up.

~Cassidy Frazee: Regular updates on your WIP and touching, honest peeps into your homelife, all things that keep me coming back for more.

~Kayla Curry: Another writer of great talent, I always enjoy checking out what you’re up to.

~The Way Of The Wytch: Another blog I’ve begun following recently, again from the April A2Z.

~Jennifer M Eaton: Because I love your work and I’m slightly awed by how busy you always seem to be.

~Descent into Slushland: Because Brian is cool and another person you should totally be stalking.

~JM McDowell: Because she’s back and she’s an archaeologist and archaeology is SO cool that I nearly chose that for my degree instead of geology. And, y’know, she’s a writer too. :p

~Jordanna East: Because I may, ever so slightly, have a talent crush on this woman. Shhh, don’t tell her.

~Caitlin Stern: I discovered this fine lady during a blog hop I was once part of. Loved what she was writing at the time and I’m sure you will too.

Wow… I thought that would be difficult but there are a bunch more bloggers I’d love to add to this list. Ho hum… maybe next time.

Thanks again for reading, really do go check out those other bloggers. They’re all well worth your time. Promise.

Why I Write #Erotica pt3 – (& I Haz Planz 02/10)

Aaaaaaaaaah. Back to our usual programming. :p This is the third of four posts on why exactly I spend some much time writing erotica over all the other genres out there. Check previous posts for my first and second reasons.

3) It’s relevant.

Some folk might not like to think so, but sex is everywhere. I don’t know if this is just a natural progression in what people like to talk about, or if it really is an offshot off FSOG’s success, but it’s there. Everywhere.

The Funk Master spotted something on Woman’s Hour that made him giggle and when I asked about it, he told me they were discussing D/s relationships. On Woman’s Hour?! And BBC3 is constantly generating comedy shorts that are rammed with sexual references and allusions to risqué doings.

More than that, sexual contact and the act of sex itself is an important (and some times integral) part of many romantic relationships. Obviously that’s not the case in every relationship – a while back I learned what Ace meant in a relationship context and was stunned to realise there is a name for those folk who just aren’t that into sex. Or actively dislike it.

Thank you again, Tab Kimpton.

But it’s there. Everywhere, in a negative or positive light. So doesn’t it make sense, then, to write about things so relevant in the world today?

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

checking off feedbackDefinitely liking the shorter to-do list. Though it’s a terrible cliche, the phrase ‘less is more’ has never been more true. With a clear mind, I can look through what I want to do, get it done and then do a bunch of extra stuff that actually knocks items of the following week’s list. All without feeling like I’ve failed if I don’t mange the extras.

Mind over matter ain’t no joke!

This is also my first post of October meaning it’s time to go back over last month and assess what I’ve been able to achieve. Here goes:

Last Week

~Finish first draft of ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’
Sorted. This version of the story is SO much better than the last and I enjoyed writing it a lot more too. Hopefully by the time I polish up and rub off those rough corners, it will be just as pleasant a read (if not more) than the others in the series.

~Book in with editor
Done. I’ve learned my lesson about leaving things for the last minute and, frankly put, this is an external deadline which will only help me going forward. Karen will be wanting ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’ in November so my aim is to make sure it’s ready to send before NaNoWriMo starts. Goodie. ^_^

September 2014 Goal Recap
I’m really pleased with this month. Put aside all the extra junk I’ve had to do (and Ileandra’s insistence on stealing Da Shared Brain) it’s gone very well.

~Have ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’ ready for an editor
Not quite. But it IS drafted now which is a step in the right direction.

~Hit ‘Go’ on Eric & Morgan release
Yup. Next week the piece will be available to buy until then you can pre-order it on Amazon or Smashwords.

~Complete all tasks assigned by Breathless Press with regards to ‘Sugar Dust, Slippers & Chains’
Sorted. The first pass of edits is done and, according to Jenn, I’ll have the next lot by tomorrow. This should keep me busy for a big chunk of the month I’d imagine.

Goals for October 2014
There’s still some debate between Ileandra and I as to who is going to do NaNoWriMo this year. All attempts to date have been hers, but she has a lot of editing to do. I have editing to do too, but I also have the next installment of Slippers & Chains to be thinking about. Second Base is next in the four part novella series and with Breathless Press working so hard with me, it’s a good idea to have the next one moving. Buuuut Ileandra also needs to draft On A Knife Point, or whatever the hell she’s calling it. That’s the last in her Saar’s Legacy series.

So it’s all a bit up in the air. I guess one of our join goals can be to figure that out.

  1. Complete all tasks assigned by Breathless Press with regards to Slippers & Chains
  2. Complete edits on ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’ reading for sending to Karen in November
  3. Read and review one erotic novel/novella for the 2014 Book Challenge

Insofar as my goals for the rest of the year I actually don’t have a great deal more to do. However what I will add to the above list is these two things:

  1. Ensure chapter by chapter outline of Slippers & Chains: Second Base is ready for working on
  2. Make decision with Ileandra about who will do NaNoWriMo this year

This Week
blank calendar from OpenClipArtThere. So to get on with this I need to:

  1. Choose October’s book to read and review. Start reading.
  2. Prepare to complete at least 10 pages of edits for Slippers & Chains IF email arrives by Sunday. Complete 5 pages if email arrives after that.
  3. Read current outline for Slippers & Chains: Second Base and make notes

Plenty. Let’s not go too far here, we know that less is more. 😉
