IY: Fantasy Creatures – Dragons – Bad Ass Kings of the Sky

Sorry it took so long. Now that all the Dead And Alive faff is out of the way, I’ve been able to go back to my poll and find out which fantasy creature won from the list. As you might have guessed from the post title, I’m going to be chatting about a fantasy creature known and loved by millions

So What Are Dragons?

For the sake of thoroughness, I’ll answer, though I’m personally yet to meet someone above the age of five, who doesn’t know what a dragon is.

At its most simple, dragons are (very) big lizards, with wings. They often breathe fire.

To make things a little more complex, there are two types of dragon (at least as far as I know) which break down into European dragons and Chinese dragons.

European Dragons

More lizard-like creatures with four legs and niiiice bat-like wings. The chap on the Welsh flag is a good example of this type as are all those from films The HobbitHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, How To Train Your Dragon (squee!) and the epic fantasy flick of 1996, Dragonheart.

Some of these dragons have opposable thumbs on their forelimbs, others don’t, but they generally have a pretty nasty tail that can be used as a weapon, much like their, claws, teeth and awesome fire breathing capabilities.

Chinese Dragons

As much as I like this type, I’ve never written about them. These are more serpentine than the European dragons and often depicted without legs. They generally tend towards wingless. The easiest example here is simple ‘Chinese dragons’ those super cool puppets often filled with a bunch of people in a line during any sort of Chinese New Year celebration.

There are variations on these theme too, but again these are the basic and more commonly seen features.

Fantasy vs History vs Reality

These creatures are so well known, precisely because they pop up everywhere. History and legend is littered with them, from Saint George and his heroic slaying of a dragon, ‘dragon bone’ used for medicinal purposes in ancient China, all the way down to their appearances in the Bible (assuming of course you know old Hebrew ;-p).

Ancient Greeks spoke of dragons as did the Romans. Christopher Columbus and folk around his time, feared that sea dragons lived at the ends of the earth (because it was flat, y’know!) waiting to eat the ships that sailed off the end.

Despite all that, the truth is that most ‘sightings’ of dragons probably related to real wild creatures like lions, elephants and snakes (with whom dragons do share many features). Old dragon bones are probably dinosaur fossils and the ‘great sea monsters’ of old are either whales, or very unlucky sailors caught up in a nasty natural phenomena of some kind.

Still . . . doesn’t stop dragons being kind cool, right? 😉

RS: eBook Review – Fool For Love (High Rise Novella, One), Harper Bliss

Cover art: Fool For Love (High Rose Novella One)

Credit: Harper Bliss

Author: Harper Bliss
Title: Fool For Love (High Rise Novella, One)
Genre: F/F Romance
ASIN: B00A9NWXNK
Length: ’72 pages’

“Betrayed by her long-term girlfriend, Alex moves into The Ivy to share a flat with her friend Nat. When she meets their neighbour Maddie, a jaded expat who’s had about enough of Hong Kong’s demanding life style, both Maddie and Alex are forced to reassess their warped view on love.

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

Cover:

Simple. Elegant in an understated way. It certainly seems to fit with the rest of F/F erotica I see out there, so it will do. Nothing special, but it doesn’t have to be. My attention has already been snagged by the fact that the piece (at the time of writing) is free. ^_^

Story:

Four independent and mature women come together in various ways as their various love lives (or lack their of) collide following a series of workout sessions in the local gym.

Characters:

It’s a tricky thing keeping track of so many characters, even in a novella as short as this. Thankfully, of the four women, only two were POV characters so I’ll chat about those in brief.
Maddie: The wrong end of an office affair. Poor thing, I felt for her to begin with and then again as more is revealed about the other end of that relationship. It happens sometimes and it’s just sad when mistakes cause pain. I think she is my fav of the POV women.
Alex: Formerly jilted lover. Hmm. Dunno. Came off as eeeeever so slightly neurotic to me. And stuck. I know past events can really muck people up but for a horrible moment I really did think she wouldn’t be able to get past it and move forward. And that would have upset me.

Eroticism:

Defo erotic. It’s tricky writing good F/F since you can’t rely too heavily on pronouns. I’ve seen the pronoun game played a little better than this, but that didn’t stop the action from being smoking hot when it came.

Overall experience:

Well paced and a good length. I don’t think this particular part of the story could have gone on for much longer, though I understand that there are three more from this series of novellas to follow. I will certainly look them up (eventually) but for now, since Maddie and Alex are the focus characters I’m satisfied with the ending of ‘Fool For Love.’

Final score:

Average across all scores is 3.6, which rounds out to 3.5 fireballs.

Satisfies my growing desire for HEA and HFN and suitably engaging around the tale of the main two characters. I would have liked to touch more on Nat (I actually found her the most interesting of the four!) but I’m hoping that the following books will feature her story a little more.Raven's Signature In Black

RS: I Haz Planz 13/08/15

I’ve been to the cinema twice this week. TWICE!!! Mission Impossible and Ant Man, both of which were very watchable indeed. ^_^ Basically, I feel like I’ve had a pretty good week, even without thinking of work.

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Decide how many changes need to be made to ‘Second Base’ and if the beta suggestions are better suited in this release than in ‘Slippers & Chains Three’
Kinda. As in, I know now that I want to keep the plotting as I originally planned and that the majority of the loose ends relating to family will be handled in the third book. The loose ends relating directly to Karen and Dan will be cleared up in ‘Second Base’ and that’s what I’ve been doing this week. Not done, but getting there.

~Put together background data for KDP and Createspace and assign ISBNs accordingly.
Done. But this is early stages so all the entries look a little sparse right now. :p Ho hum. Thought it does make me wonder if I need to stagger the releases for ease’s sake. Y’know . . . eBook first, followed by paperback release a little later. It is actually more expensive that way, but if I’m smart, it should be manageable. We’ll see.

Activities For This Week

  1. Complete ‘Read Aloud’ of ‘Second Base’ with all resultant changes
  2. Format Createspace versions of ‘Second Base’ to get page numbers
  3. Commission ‘Second Base’ cover art with Ravenink on Fiverr

I’m feeling more relaxed now that I know what I want to do about last week’s issue. In fact, I’m relaxed all over. So much so that I may watch a movie tonight, depending on how the work goes.

I figure all these things need to happen one after the other and that it should be simple enough to whirl through them. They are mostly very simple jobs.

IY: Mah Plans 10/08/15

Wow, Monday again. ^_^ A busy week, a fantastic weekend and yet, some good things are happening. Take a peep.

Actions Last Week

~Finalise cover art for ‘Episode One’ of ‘Dead And Alive.’
So close. Sooooooo close! ^_^ I have the concept for the whole series now and I just need to do a few tiny tweaks to make sure each cover is the way I want it to look. The focus, obviously, is on episode one, but I have four of the six done so far.

checking off feedback~Outline formatting for release of ‘Episode One’
Yes. And I have two versions: full episode and teaser release. All I need to do is round it off ready for Friday, which should be easy to get done.

~Send x3 review requests for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
Done. It’s getting trickier now since my list of reviewers is nearing the end, but I don’t want to give too much time to this over producing more content. *sigh* Delicate balance . . . just like everything else!

Activities For This Week

  • Perform last few cover art for tweaks for ‘Episode One’ of ‘Dead And Alive.’
  • Release ‘Episode One’ of ‘Dead And Alive’
  • Send x3 review requests for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’

Thoughts…

One week of leaving ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ alone. My fingers itch every time I think of it! Now I’m actually glad I have another project to distract me otherwise I’d be tearing my hair out.

Want another teaser for ‘Dead And Alive’? Here’s another teaser:
