Ebook vs ‘Real Book’

Well here is a debate I never thought I’d have! I’ve always been an advocate of ‘real books’ and the wonderful feel of paper between my fingers. I love picking a book up off my shelf and feeling the texture, smelling the print and the pages before gently pulling it open, curling my legs up and diving in. I can safely say that that is something that will never, ever, die.

But…!

…I got a Kindle for Christmas. Bear in mind that I’ve been debating buying one for some time and talked about this to my mother, at length. I was stunned to realise that she had one and that she was using it (bad of me, I know; why the hell shouldn’t she?), but that conversation made it all the more clear that I did indeed want one.

I was all geared to buy one myself – hell knows when or how – when I open my third pressie on Christmas morning to see the lowercase logo of Amazon’s most favoured product to date. kindle. Squeee!

Well… anybody who has been keeping up with my Twitter feed will already know that on that first day, I downloaded 23 books to my new toy. For those who don’t know me all that well, or who are fascinated as to how I had so much money to spend in such a lump, let me explain:
I am an impulsive, compulsive buyer. It gets me into trouble all the time. However, with upcoming changes to my utterly selfish and self absorbed life to date, I’m doing my absolute best to curb the urge to spend my hard earned £s on tat. So… my method, my aim, my goal, my plan (pick which sounds best) is to completely and utterly bore myself with downloading books. Free books. Once I’m bored with it, and the novelty has worn off, then and only then, am I allowed to buy a book through Amazon’s ebook store.

So… yes… while I have downloaded 23 25 (I just found another couple of cool classics!) to my Kindle, I haven’t paid for any of them yet. They have all come from the free section

Now… there, immediately is a plus verses the ‘real book.’ I can’t think of many places where I can get that many printed books for free. However – and I’m loathe to say it, but I’ve got to – the quality of the printed books I buy is such that I really don’t mind paying for them. In fact, I want to, because these authors have done such an incredible job that they deserve to be paid. That is certainly not to say that the ebooks I’m reading are awful, but of the two I’ve read so far, there is a very clear difference between those books that might make it into book stores in the traditional way and those that simply can’t and won’t without a bit more polish.

Part of me feels awful for saying it – what right do I have?! – but it does serve to make the facts all the clearer to me; the competition is stiff and I have to work HARD to ensure that someday, somewhere, a reviewer isn’t making the same comments about my work.

I’ve drifted a bit… so… ebook. Well, as I write this, I’m ill. I’m in my dressing gown, with pyjamas underneath and my hair wrapped up off my face. I have a sweet drink at my side to ease my cough and a long time to go before I’m allowed any more paracetamol (no antibiotics thankfully; not sure how that would effect my babbas!). But technology allows me to write this from my bed – I love my laptop – and, when I’m done, gives me the option to roll onto my side (damn I miss lying on my stomach!) and pick from a selection of 25 books without moving. They’re on my Kindle. Otherwise I’d have to pop next door, pick a book off my shelves, bring it back and curl up beneath the sheets again. My Kindle gives me immediate freedom and choice and, to be honest, as I lie here, if I decide there’s a book that I want that I don’t have, chances are I can get it in the next five minutes. Gotta love ebooks, right?

But ‘real books…?’ Notice how I keep putting quote marks around this phrase? That’s because to call a printed book a ‘real’ book, in my mind, is unfair. Yes, they came first, and there is very little in the world to compare to the feel of a physical book in your hands. My double stacked bookcase (and four waist high stacks of unshelved books) will attest to that. But in terms of storage, portability and ease of reading… well… read back over what I just wrote. I’m running out of space to keep my books. With the twins on the way, I really can’t give up the space required for another case or shelves. I can only carry one at a time in my handbag and the weight of the thing (my books are MEATY) means that its a strain on my shoulders these days. Going on holiday with three books (that’s my minimum as a rule) is a real pain and I don’t relish having to pick.
But, like I said… there is nothing like feeling those pages between your fingers.

Besides! How on earth are you going to get your favourite authors to sign your Kindle?! I have at least four books signed by Shaun Hutson (treasured, much loved and well looked after items) and I want more. Definitely can’t do that with a Kindle.

Anyway, I think all this post has done is tell you that I love both mediums. Which is true. And now that I have both, I’m not going to give up either. Hell, certain books you can only get in one form or the other anyway! So why cut yourself off from one author just because you can’t decide? Be greedy… works for me! ^_^

Bonus Blog: 3 Word Challenge

I might be jumping the gun somewhat, but my 80 Post Challenge will be finishing up relatively soon. Well… I say that; I’m half way through now, but that still leaves another 34ish weeks. Ha, almost enough time to grow more babies!

Anyway… I still like challenges. I like doing different things and in one of my recent Twitterverse splurges I told the world ; ‘Want to write something… don’t know what. :(‘
The answer came through on my Facebook; ‘a short erotic story that includes a bright blue balloon, a ball of twine and three small figs.’

Right. Okay, well my first response to that, obviously was ‘you’re on!’ and I spent the next six days writing exactly that.

The piece has come out at just shy of 6,000 words and while it doesn’t actually include the words, as you can see from the sample above, it does have a happily ever after ending, which is unusual for my erotica. For some reason most of what I write in that regard ends up as sad, heart wrenching tales of lost love. o.O Sod knows why!

Anyway, the point is, I really enjoyed writing something with words as a trigger. So! So the next challenge is the 3 word challenge. Once a month I’ll put it out on Twitter and/or Facebook that I need
1) three random words
2) a genre
3) fiction type (mirco/flash/short)

And I’ll write something to fit those words. Mainly to see if I can do it, since, in my mind, it should have been easy to include all of the things on Celine’s list, but somehow, by the end of it, I just couldn’t put them in the story.

This piece of writing will come second to any projects I already have on the go, particularly if they are for a deadline, but I think that might be something nice and light to keep me ticking over if I end up in a dead spot like I did that day when I put the tweet out.

I think after this though, I probably won’t add any more challenges to this blog until I finish one or both of the others. 2012 is already looking incredibly busy!

So… there we are! That’s all my bonus blog posts done for the week. I hope you enjoyed the peak into my plans for the year ahead. More than that, I hope you’ll stick with me to see them through. It would be great to know you’re around in 365 days! ^_^
Normal scheduling to resume next week!

Bonus Blog: Word Count Goal for 2012

I love NaNoWriMo. That crazy month of blindly battering at the keyboard keys in the hopes of getting down something worth reading later on. Even if just to giggle at the crazy tangents your brain goes on when set loose. Lol. I love it so much that I never really want to let it go when November ends. So… why should I?

Yeah… I realise that’s easier said than done, but I don’t mean I want to write a novel every month. There are awesome people doing exactly that, but, awesome as they are, I know full well that I won’t have the time for that kinda thing. No matter how much I might want to. Maybe later in my life… maybe… but not now.

So… my compromise in that regard is a year long word count goal. NaNoWriMo asks that we write 50,000 words in 30 days. Well… I’m going to ask myself to write 300,000 in 366 days (yey leap year!).

If I’ve worked this out correctly then that is just 300,000 words shy of writing 50,000 words every month.
That works out to something in the region of 820 words every day.
Or 5740 words each week

That goal is less than the NaNoWriMo daily goal and within my capabilities (I hope) when I consider the following:
-I have plans to start the first draft of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ very soon
-I still have to work through my A-Z Flash Fiction Challenge (and each one is about 1,000) words
-I write 100 words (and sometimes more) each week for the Phoenix Writers Group
-I have an inexplicable urge to write about my babies (more on that in future posts)
Recent weeks have rekindled my love of writing erotica and smut (there is a difference, I will talk about that more in later blog posts)
-These blog posts often reach 1,000 words without me trying

Now, its difficult to tell if I’m overreaching myself here. Last year; this would have been no problem; in fact I probably would have gone for the whole 600,000 and be done with it. This year there are lots of other things to worry about and frankly put I’ve no intention of skimping on that. But one never got anywhere by not testing oneself.

As a dear friend of mine once told me; if it was all easy, it wouldn’t be worth the XP. ^_^

So… that is my goal and there will be a page dedicated to it. A page with a counter on it somewhat like the one I did for NaNoWriMo 2011 and there, once I’ve given it a bit more thought, I’ll include more information on what writing will be included, what won’t and, of course, regular updates on how I’m getting on.

o.O Wish me luck, eh?

Bonus Blog: Books I Want To Read in 2012

Welcome to the fifth (I think) of my bonus blog entries for the this, the first week of 2012!

I’ve hinted that there were several things I wanted to be sure I did this year and you’ll be pleased to hear that thought hasn’t changed. There are sooooooo many books I want to read or re-read that part of me is looking forward to the maternity leave so I can stick my face in a book. Not that there’s going to be loads of time for that at first, but babies have got to sleep at some point, right? Right?!

Please say yes! *whimper*

Anyway, with the arrival of my Kindle (squee!!! – a post on that in later posts) getting hold of books I never would have thought to buy is going to be significantly more simple than it has been in the past. Possibly cheaper too. But book isn’t just about ebooks, its about paper books as well and even though last year, following Alt Fiction, I did a crazy amount of reading of new authors, I want to top that this year. At some point I’ll count up how many new authors I discovered last year, but for this year… I want to find 24.
That’s two each month.
I don’t care if they’re indie authors, self published, on small press or published through the big six… I just want to find 24 new authors that I’ve not read before and expand my reading repertoire even further. I am firmly of the believe that great writers are great readers. I want to be a great reader; so….

So… this month begins my journey!

My bookshelvesWith the help of my trusty Kindle and regular trips to Waterstones, I’m going to do me some reading!!! Hmm… guess I’m going to need a set of new book shelves after all. o.O

If you want specifics, then here are a few authors I’ve never read and feel guilty at admitting:
Robert Louis Stephenson
Lewis Carroll
Charles Dickens
Charlotte Brontë
Emily Brontë
Oscar Wilde
Victor Hugo
I know… hang my head in shame, right?

And some books that I am desperate to read before the year is out (if only just to see what the fuss is about):
Wuthering Heights
Game Of Thrones
The Picture Of Dorian Gray
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Jane Eyre
Oliver Twist
King Lear (I KNOW its a play… I’m still going to read it properly)
Frankenstein

And as for books I would love to re-read….
The Iliad
Othello
1984
A Brave New World
Pride And Prejudice
The Lord Of The Rings
Wheel Of Time Series (to date)
To name a few. Lol, there are more, though I would like to give this year over to new authors. That seems better.

So… even though it would be easy to meet that new author goal by just picking up 24 books I want to read that I’ve never read before, it would be too easy.

So, on top of the new author goal, I also want to read 24 books. And that is a separate goal and separate counter to the authors. I figure a rate of two books a month shouldn’t be too tricky. Lord, I hope I’m not setting myself up for a fall here. 🙂

Wish me luck!

Bonus Blog: CoTAK Finds A Home

Proof Book Cover

Remember this? Proof copy of CoTAK through CreateSpace using my NaNoWriMo voucher. ^_^

Yes. Clash Of The Animal Kings (CoTAK when I’m feeling lazy) is my NaNoWriMo novel of 2010. An early excerpt can be found here and various ramblings while writing it and beyond can be found here.

If you were around yesterday then you would have read that I have found a publisher for this novel. Today I can say yes, yes, yes, this is the truth and yes, yes, yes I am thoroughly excited!

Contract signed and between myself and Lester Smith of Popcorn Press to publish Clash Of The Animal Kings. WAH!

This is early stages yet. Its taken me some time to be happy with the decision to go ahead with Popcorn (paranoia that this is too good to be true and someone is having a mean joke on me can do that) but now that’s out of the way, I do realise there’s plenty more to go. I just wish I knew how much. This is all new territory for me and I as much as I can talk to other authors about what they might have been through, every experience is different. All I can say is that I’m overjoyed to get the chance of experiencing it at all.

There were lots of people involved with CoTAK to the stage its at, though I really feel I should give especial thanks to Sara Slack of Inspired Quill (your thoughtful comments and editing sample gave me more than enough ammunition to go on and make the story stronger), Celine Smith-Peterson for catching finer issues while beta reading for me (as well as giving me some vaulable personal insights which helped flesh out one of the characters) and to (Honest) David Soden for quietly giving me a gentle nudge whenever I began to falter.

Don’t disappear though, guys. I may need you again as time goes on; this is far, far from over! :p

The novel is to be published late in 2012; so as and when I get any updates I’ll be sure to pass them along to you. All in all I have to say this puts me in an extremely positive frame of mind for 2012 and for work like Silk Over Razor Blades which, though it still needs work, is getting closer and closer to what I want it to be.

Squee!
