Sunday Snippets Critique Blog Hop 15 #CritHop

Button for blog hopToday is all about cake baking and shopping lists ready for tomorrow. We’ve finally decided what to do for the boys’ birthday and are looking forward to a lovely garden party complete with food and drink. Whee!

I know I’ve been ‘late’ with this post quite often recently, but this week, that’s the excuse (and I’m sticking to it!).

Thanks for your comments last week. I haven’t done much with the piece yet, though I’d like to enter it somewhere, so I’m going to look at it as much as possible over the coming weeks. This week, however, I’m going to offer some more older stuff. I keep finding it and I’m so happy to see it that I’d like you to see it.

So… this piece is 198 words and the trigger word for it was Fleshware. Self contained flash fiction, I’d love to know what you think. 🙂

“How do I look?” Maxine twirled before the mirror.
“Beautiful.”
“You don’t think it’s too much?” She patted her cheeks and curled a section of hair behind her ear.
“No, it’s the perfect balance.” Lloyd’s reflection loomed into view at her shoulder. He leaned in to plant a kiss on the side of her neck. “It’s a good look on you.”
Beaming, Maxine turned away from the mirror and plucked a magazine from the desk. She gazed at the image there for a moment or two before dropping the whole thing into the bin. “I’ve always wanted to look like Halle Berry.”
“I prefer Kate Winslet, myself.”
Squeezing passed Lloyd, Maxine slapped his backside with her palm on the way to the door. “Just because you like red heads. I’ve always been partial to Ewan McGregor but you don’t catch me complaining.”
“What’s wrong with Colin Farrel?” He pouted.
“Nothing sweetheart.” She kissed his cheek. “Come on; we’re late.” She opened the door and gestured him through, pausing long enough to call to the empty air; “computer, shut down.”
A mechanical monotone replied, “Facial reconstruction complete. Fleshware 5000, shut down initiated.”
Maxine shut the laboratory door behind her.

My Writing Priorities

cute cartoon penguine at a computer from OpenClipArtI’ve been seeking freelance writing work for a month now. From The Write Feeling site, Freelancer and several other places, I’ve put out my name and my skills to find work that pays. While prepared for how hard this would be, I didn’t count on how frustrated I would feel. It’s been a month and while my business plan reflected a slow start (over three months in fact), I’m still hurting that I’ve been unable to secure work.

On Tuesday I returned to my Freelancer account to assess my skill set. I updated it and began a fresh search for jobs with these new skills in mind. I now include ghostwriting in my skill set as well as blogging, articles, fiction, editing and proofreading. My search is primarily for editing and proofreading work, since this is what The Write Feeling specialises in, however, in light of the update, I did look at ghostwriting. Three days on I’m yet to place a bid on any ghostwriting job.

I spent a day considering this – since I’m unconsciously disregarding a potential source of income I need to know why! After much thought I found the answer and through understanding why I’ve avoided these jobs, I’ve also come to better understand my motivations as a writer.

The money on offer is as good as any other job, as are the hours. The time I would need to give over to ghostwriting, in some cases, is easier than the jobs I have bid for. However, these ghostwriting jobs all (so far without exception) state: ‘copyright and ownership passes to me (employer) and your (employee) name will not appear on the final work.’

Huh. So, though I’m paid, I don’t get the credit for the piece? What if it’s the best thing I’ve ever written? What if, after completing the job, I lose all my fingers and can’t type another story ever again? What if I just decide to pack it all in, after the job? Despite having written something that is now published and earning a few pennies, I’ll never get credit.

HELL NO!

I laughed at myself when I identified the problem. I found it funny. It comes down to what I’ve always suspected about myself but have now proven: I don’t care about the money. While it would be nice, big bucks are just a fringe benefit to seeing my name in print.

At least now that I know that, I can be smarter about how I bid for jobs on Freelancer and anywhere else.

Where do you guys draw the line when it comes to your writing? What is the key aspect of it for you that keeps you going back for more and more?

Bonus Blog: New Challenge! #15kinMay

Yes! As if things aren’t mad enough I’ve decided to dip my toes in a new challenge! Having missed out on the A-Z Challenge of April (I’m always way too slow to get in on that… grr!), I wanted to try something to give me a bit of a stretch. Something doable, but still involves a bit of work. I figure this is a nice, safe way to exercise my writing muscles, while waiting for a bit more work from The Write Feeling (more on that tomorrow, by the way).

I first caught wind of this over at the First Draft Café and since I know Maria to be absolutely lovely (!) I figured she wouldn’t mind me hopping onto the band wagon. 😉
This post is, strictly speaking, a day late, but since yesterday was such a good writing day I’m going to start from there and see how I get on. At the time of writing my word count for May stands at 1,689 and I’ll be using these familiar graphs to keep track.15k In May Wordcount

Funky thermometer kindly supplied by Fundraiser Insight

Just for clarity, here is a quick list of the things I’ll be including in this word count:

  • First drafts
    • Short stories
    • Flash fiction
    • Novels/novellas
  • Work type bits
    • Letters
    • Articles
    • Features

I think that should be plenty to keep me going. I’ll check in again next week so you can see how I’m getting on. And for the rest of you taking part… happy writing!

#GoodThingsJar2013 April Update

#GoodThingsJar2013

Lookie, lookie at all of the GOOD THINGS!!!

I always forget about my jar until it’s time to talk about it. Not that I forget to put things in it, more that I forget to be pleased about what it represents.

It’s filling up fast and there are so many more blue (or is it green? Can’t tell in the light in here) slips! Way more than the others. Apparently April has been a good month.

To break it down, April has included things like signing off JSA (FREAKIN YES!), the official launch of The Write Feeling, entering numerous competitions and getting some letters out there (to magazines). I’ve also included weight loss milestones (6lbs in two weeks!) and milestones for the boys. Michael AND Leon are walking now, though Michael is that little bit less confident that his younger brother. *snerk* Younger, do remember that there is only one minute between them!

I’ve also put things like Zombie Earth in the jar which was, effectively, my first LARP in over a year. Can you believe that?! A year (and more) since I put on my ears and danced around the woods as Trya. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I invite you to take a closer look at the picture to the right of your screen. Yeah more Trya HF 9 It was so good to get back into LARPing in any for, that I’m thinking about going back this week. That all depends on family though; as there are lots of visits happening this weekend.

Not only is it the boys’s birthday next week (*GASP*) but it’s also mine. Talk about an awesome double whammy! I think the jar for May is going to be pretty heavy with coloured slips.

I’ve not decided what colour I want yet. I’d better work on that because I already have some things I want to add. Not least, the short story I managed to bash out just today. 1,689 words, a complete story for a competition I thought I’d enter, from the Writer’s Magazine. It needs a heavy handed edit, but with a deadline of May 14, I’m sure I can manage it. The hardest part is done. Ish.

So… what about you fine folks? How does your jar look at this point of the year? Nice and full I hope! ^_^

I Wrote A Poem!

Yes… that is noteworthy because I don‘t write poetry. And I’m so pleased with it (ish) that I’m going to post it here for your enjoyment.

Tiny hands, tiny feet

Chubby fingers raised to meet

My face, my cheek, my lips, my nose

The flutter of my heartbeat goes

Tap, tap, tap, ratta, tatta, tat tat

There is no purer joy than that

Toothless grin, burbling laugh

My life to date has been but half

Of what it is now every day

I hope it can remain this way

Boom, boom, badda badda, boom boom

Each smile gives me cause to swoon

Twelve long months, a sleepless year

Through all the time I felt the fear

That I would not be good enough

The role of ‘mother’ would be too tough

But…

Thump, thump, a thumpa dump dump

To their every need I’ll gladly jump

There. 🙂 And if any of you are any good with titles, give me a hand here. I’ve no idea what to call this.

Cheers! ^_^
