DSB: A 2015 In Review (Thanks WordPress)

As ever, the WordPress.com stats helper monkeys have prepared a 2015 annual report for this blog. Something I always enjoy seeing and sharing.

Always nice to know how the blog has performed compared to other years and to see what works and what didn’t.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 6,300 times in 2015. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 5 trips to carry that many people.

DSB: Happy New Year 2016

So . . . I managed to get Ileandra and Raven in the same place. For once. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Given that it’s such a rare occurrence, I thought a video message might be the most appropriate way to mark the event.

Enjoy!

IY: Mah Plans 28/12/15

What a lovely weekend! ^_^ I hope you guys can boast as good a Christmas as we’ve had. Family, (too much) food and other pleasant company all over the shop. A little stressful at times, but what isn’t?

Gift from The Sprogs. ^_^

Gift from The Sprogs. ^_^

Actions Over The Past Fortnight

~Write blurbs for the last three Dead and Alive episodes
Done! Though I can only add pre-orders onto Amazon three months ahead, so I can’t put them all up yet. Never mind, I’ll put entries in my diary to get them up as soon as I’m able, that allows the biggest pre-order window possible. ^_^

~Create cover art for Dead And Alive episodes four and six
At last! I finally have a cover for episode four that I like. It took a lot of doing, but this puts over the tone and feel I want without being too complex. There will be a ‘big reveal’ later on.

~Complete proof of physical โ€˜Walking The Razorโ€™s Edge
Yep. Couple of tweaks required and a small continuity issue that popped up while I was going through ‘On A Knife Point’ so I was able to fix that too. Much like I found just before I released ‘Silk Over Razor Blades‘ actually. Phew! I tell you, this may be the last time I do a trilogy; it’s hard work!

~Complete deep edits on at least half of โ€˜On A Knife Pointโ€™ (around 45,000 words)

Yeeeeeeah. I started yesterday. I managed one chapter.
-_-
Ho hum. I knew it would be a stretch and I’ll readily admit that I made these plans utterly forgetting that the Sprogs would be off school, losing me three hours of work every weekday. But I’ve started and that’s what counts.

Activities For This Remains of the Year

blank calendar from OpenClipArtI’m not an idiot. I know that in theย three daysย left of the year (one of which DSB is going to spend in Birmingham) I’m not going to get as much done as I might otherwise. But there areย someย things I can still get done. So:

  • List ‘Dead And Alive: Episode Four’ as a pre-order (and episode five if dates allow)
  • Complete deep edits on one chapter of โ€˜On A Knife Pointโ€™

Thoughts…

Given what my plans were at the start of the year, I’m too elated to be annoyed that I didn’t complete the deep editing. I may also be buzzing slightlyย from all the flavoured booze I’ve been drinking. Meh. Either way, I’m pleased with what I’ve done and looking forward to wrapping it all up on December 31.

IY: Fantasy Creatures – Werewolves – The Myth

Seems like ages ago I last spoke of werewolves. Then I was talking about how to find them when out and about. If you’re not sure, then do check out the post. I’m sure you’ll find it useful. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Next up, I want to talk about the myth itself. Where do they come from? Where do the stories take their roots? Well I’ve done a little digging . . .

According to the Mythical Realm, these legends go back to Greek and Romanian sources.ย There is also the fact that the other word for werewolf (or any other werecreature, actually) is lycanthrope. Of course clinical lycanthropy is a real psychiatricย illnessย in which someone believes that they can turn into a non-human animal. The illness took its name directly from legend, but I do find it interesting, just the same.

This fabulous website (best enjoyedย while drunk) splits werewolves into three types; the shape-shifter, the true werewolf and the wolf-man. To my knowledge, none of these creatures (they way they’re described on that site) go as far back in legend as old Romania or Greece, but they’re still worth looking at.

The first example of a werewolf in literature I can find is from Greek Mythology in which King Lycaeon was turned into a wolf after serving human flesh to some gods (naughty, naughty!). In truth, that may even be a hint as to the source of the word ‘lycanthrope.’ After that, there are variations on the theme but most myths seem to cling to the following:

  • Silver is the only metal that can harm them
  • Their change is governed by the full moon
  • One becomes a werewolf by being bitten by another, in its wolf form
  • Once changed, werewolves are mindless killing machines with little memory of their human forms until the moon sets

Though, I’ve got to admit, I’ve read some fantastic examples of fantasy in recent years that smash some/all of those tropes right out of the water.

Want some good werewolf reads? Take a look at:

  • High Moor by Graeme Reynolds (and the other two in the trilogy, though last I checked the third hadn’t been released yet)
  • Bitten by Kelley Armstrong (and the rest of that series)
  • The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris
  • Genesis (Shifter Nation, book one) by R Huffman.

All that remains is to discuss the otherย werewolves I mentioned at the start of this little section: those from Stephanie Myer’s Twilight series. I must be honest here, and admit that I don’t recall much about them, but I know there is a different between shape-shifters and werewolves. Strictly speaking, Jacob and friends aren’t werewolves at all, but shape-shifters, descendants of one man, Utlapa.

Since Twilight doesn’t rank highly (or at all) on my list of favs, I can’t say more than that, but fan sites are a great way to look this up. I recommend this wikiย to look into the werewolves/shape-shifters of these books.

In short, the werewolf myth versus that of shape-shifters and/or lycanthropes are very mixed up. This doesn’t even begin to go into what movies have done with them and I’m talking about things like Underworld, Van Helsing, Dog Soldiers, An American Werewolf in London, Ginger Snaps, Teen Wolf and Brotherhood of the Wolf. And that’s only naming a few!
