Writing And Bi-versity? (& Mah Plans – 29/09)

Last week was Bi Visibility Week, specifically focused on September 23.

bisexual visibility day banner

I didn’t even know about this until the day itself. Somebody said something on Twitter that brought it to my attention and I was all ‘We have a day? When did that happen?’ Da Shared Brain then proceeded to change all of her FB imagery and I got into a debate about bi-hate at Pride events.

portion of cheeseIt’s never really been an issue for me before. I’m lucky enough that, outwardly, my romantic relationships are ‘traditional’ in that I’ve ended up with a man and I have two kids (put aside the age difference between us). I rarely have my sexuality questioned because when people see me with Dave, they assume I’m straight and that’s it. As a result being bisexual has never put me in awkward situations or lead me to have difficult conversations. It’s just a part of me. Like my love for cheese.

What I didn’t realise was how long this aspect of me has been part of me.

I ‘came out’ at the end of uni. It got a bit tricky always having to avert my eyes from a pretty woman I couldn’t help staring at and I felt uncomfortable with the general assumption I was going to end up with a man. Before that point I’d heard the word ‘bisexual’ but didn’t really twig what it meant. It just wasn’t important.

But some things did happen and I realised that my staring at other woman wasn’t just about being jealous of their lovely bodies. It was about fancying them and in some cases imagining relationships with them.

Yey me. Figuring it out was a bonus. Telling people who really didn’t care either way was a double bonus. Being told it ‘was just a phase’ only happened once and hasn’t come up again. Score.

But a few weeks back I started looking at some of my older writers. As far back as fifteen years. I would have been in secondary school, about fifteen years old and my stories then features several same sex relationships. They weren’t front and centre, but they were always there, forming background to whatever else was going on. I’d never noticed that before, or realised what it meant. I’m not sure that it means anything, only that I have always been open to the idea of varied sexual preferences and expressions of sexuality. Even as a teenager when I wasn’t exposed to it at all.

girl in purple asking questionsHow did that happen? Where did it come from? How much has it influenced what I and Raven write at the moment, now that we’re grown ups and able to understand the feels that we couldn’t all those years ago?

I don’t know the answers to any of those questions. But it is very interesting to think about nonetheless.

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipartThis last week of September is incomplete but I’m going to write it up as normal anyway and save the month summary for next week. It’s a bit of a cheat (heh) but it does give me a smidge more time to catch up on those things I might have let slip.

Last week

Approach three peer blogs regarding guest posts.
*sings* Two out of three ain’t bad. Yes, two. And there will be more. This is something I’m going to give a lot more attention to. Two is a start, but I’d like to get around seven to do a weeks worth of blog hopping. I think that’s a fair number, right?

Write up small article for submission to Writing Magazine and/or Writer’s Forum about SORB
Done. Can’t send it yet because both want a picture of the cover art, but having it writing is a good start. The next step is easy.

Pick a story to submit somewhere
Done. Twice in fact. One piece of flash and a short story issued into the ether. It would be nice to come back with some positive responses, but we’ll see what happens after the judging.

Spend at least two nights NOT working and combine them with EITHER an early night or a CrossFit/Roller Derby workout*
Early nights. No skating as I’ve not been my best and I’ve also been away, but those early nights are really starting to do me a ton of good. Don’t know why I didn’t do this sooner!

This Week

It’s all about marketing this week. making a plan to let the world know SORB is on the way. Let’s see…

  1. Approach four more blogs regarding guest posts/interviews.
  2. Research poster opportunities in local stores/hangouts (library / city centre info desk / my various coffee shops / book stores)
  3. Check out BBC Radio Leicester for similar speaking opportunities
  4. Find a networking event to attend in the near future
  5. Goodreads logoGet my Goodreads account working and check it at least twice in the week
  6. Outline plan for ‘subscriber zone‘ on this blog and on main website
  7. Spend at least two nights NOT working and combine them with EITHER an early night or a CrossFit/Roller Derby workout*

Seems like a lot, but I don’t think it is. A lot of this I can get done while out and about on the road with the boys and it shouldn’t take more effort than I normally spend going into these places and sitting down with a coffee. Just means speaking with the management (most of whom I’m on good terms with). As for the rest, it means using my time on the Internet for proper searching, rather than searching interspersed with Twitter chatter 😉

Raven’s September Indie eBook Review: Watching Sin

Watching Sin book cover

Credit: Lori King

Author: Lori King
Title: Watching Sin
Genre: Erotica / Menagé / BDSM
ASIN: B00KZ41KGY
Words: 14,000
‘After fifteen years as a bland housewife, Alana is ready to shake up her life by fulfilling her darkest fantasy. She wants to be watched. Her exhibitionist streak is ready to break free, and she knows exactly whom she wants for her voyeur.
Doug would give his wife, Alana, the moon if she asked, so he’s more than willing to participate in a public threesome at a fetish party if it makes her kinky wishes come true. His business partner and best friend, Killian is the wild card in their plan.
A businessman first, and a trained Dominant second, Killian never gets tied down to one submissive. He’s a lover with commitment issues, but he doesn’t hesitate to help fulfill Doug and Alana’s fantasies. Once the fantasy is set in motion, the three players must decide if watching sin is enough… ‘

Mmm another smexxy MMF offering. I like these more than many others, I have to admit. Not that I read enough of them. I need to do more searching for stuff like this, I guess.

Cover:

Nice. I don’t like the drop shadow beneath the title (the font is strong enough that the shadow is a shade too much) but the rest of the detail is lovely. Good use of colour, a steam (if a little clichéd image) and a tagline that adds just the right amount of extra detail.

Story:

Alana wants to shake up her sex life with a bit of open air sex. Fortunately for her, husband Doug is more than happy to oblige her in this kinky fantasy at a play party arranged by business partner Killian. However, Killian is not content to simply watch. He wants in on the action too but more than that, he wants to control it.
(Heh, what is it they say about mixing business and pleasure?)

Characters:

Alana: feisty, smart and not afraid to ask for what she wants. I like that. She was also real. Her moment of panic somewhere in the middle was just perfect in light of the fact that she had just done something so different and intimate. I liked that time was given to explore this reaction.
Doug: a bit wet. Sorry. Yes, there’s usually only one dominant male in these sorts of stories, but he seemed to go along with some parts just a fraction too easily. I wanted a tiny bit more friction from this character, it would have made him more interesting.
Killian: *hissssss* Yeouch. Can’t touch this guy. Just the right levels of smouldering sexy vs vulnerability. Make him rounded in a way that Doug didn’t quite manage. At least for me.

Eroticism:

Fuck me with a pointy stick (actually, don’t, thanks) there was loads. Another one of those stories that starts with a slow burn. But once it got going, by god, I needed to stay close to the shower. Quite glad I was reading this at home rather than out and about.

Overall experience:

I have one complaint. Just one. There seems to be a disturbing idea that once somebody gives a safe word within a BDSM scene, that the night stops, it’s all over and everything goes back to null.

No. No, no, no, no! I’m sure some relationships work this way, but seeing it in so many books makes me wonder if this is considered ‘a thing.’ It’s not. Some relationships work this way, but others use safe words to slow the action down or ask for a break. It’s not a stop-dead-red-light-stop-the-ride-I-want-to-get-off sort of thing. It bugs me when safe words are treated this way because the person using them is pressured not to. It’s walking the fine line between between consensual sex and passive-aggressive coercion and I don’t like it. Not one bit.

Besides that…? Fooking great book. ^_^

Final score:

Average across all scores is 3.9, rounding out to 4 fireballs.

Aside from my passionate gripe about safe words (sorry) this story is definitely a go-er. I liked it and the spicy nature of the relationships between the three gave it just the right edge.

Banned Books Week – (& I Haz Planz 25/09)

I know I should be working through my Why I Write Erotica series, but I just had to talk about this first. Sorry…!

little pink work reading a book; bookworm from OpenClipArtFirst of all, thanks Josh Mosey for cluing me into the fact that it’s banned books week this week. How do I not know this stuff?! It must be an ‘across the pond’ thing because it seems to be US0-centric, though I’m sure there are similar lists in the UK too.

Anyway he and Ileandra were talking about banned books and the affect it has on children over on his blog and it got me to thinking.

Banning a book, as he says, only serves to increase it’s popularity. Make anything taboo and people will be queuing up to see/watch/listen to it. Is that necessarily a bad thing?

Depends on the book.

Unsurprisingly, a glance at last year’s top ten challenged books, Fifty Shades of Grey is right up there at number four. Frankly, I’m surprised it’s not higher than that. Funny thing is, the reasons other people challenge the book (nudity, offensive language, religious viewpoint, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group) are nothing like the reasons for which I challenge it (piss-poor writing, weak plot, irritating as hell characters and overuse of the phrase ‘oh my’.)

big, red thumbs down symbolBut I only read the book(s) because of all the negative press. With so many people at such opposite extremes of the spectrum I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about. I didn’t know it had been banned, though I’m not hugely surprised to hear it, all I knew was that it was a supposedly erotic trilogy that had women all over the world fanning themselves on the bus.

So maybe banning books is both a good and bad thing. It can bring a vast range of books to the attention of those who would otherwise miss them. I’d never heard of Captain Underpants before yesterday, but apparently this silly kids book is the number one source for book complaints. o.O Crazy isn’t it? When the likes of Twilight are there to worry about.

I know, I know, I’m sorry, that’s enough bashing. :p

Let’s get on with something productive, shall we?

Last Week
checking off feedbackThrilled at how this week has gone. Making my to-do list smaller has prevented me freaking out about how much needs to be done and just doing it.

~Complete at the remaining edits on ‘Slippers & Chains’ for Breathless Press
Done. And ahead of schedule too! I know so much more about Dan and Karen than I thought possible and the edit increased the word count of the novella by 10,000 words. Not a bad thing as I’ve no doubt I’ll have to whittle that back down again as the next round of edits takes place, but I am surprised but just how much I was able to add without killing the story.

~Write 1,500 new words of ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’
More like 2,800. Something just clicked when I started writing. The story is pouring out of it and it’s already a ton better than the original version. If I can keep this up I’ll be mega happy with the result.

This Week
blank calendar from OpenClipArtIt’s all about the little things. This is the last week of September, so I’ll need to do some sweeping to ensure that all the main goals for the month are met.

  1. Finish first draft of ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’
  2. Book in with editor

Two small goals, but I think that’s all I need. Coupled with what Ileandra has to do there’s more than enough above to keep me busy.

Crowdfunding: Is It Begging? Does It Matter? (& Mah Plans – 22/09)

picture of me with shades of a

Happy Face (honest)

I adore Kickstarter. I don’t use it often, but when I do it’s usually for one of this guy’s projects. I’m a total fangirl and I know, without Kickstarter I would never get those books in my hands. Ever. And, when I do, as you can see, I’m quite happy.

But Kickstarter isn’t quite what I’m talking about here, because with Kickstarter you’re not just giving money away. You’re booking a product/service that will be available if there is enough interest to support making it. It’s like market research but in reverse.

But the other day I found another writerly type using Go Fund Me. I’d never heard about it before reading his blog and when I did I realised I’d discovered a less known version Kickstarter. Then I started to do some mooching around. There’s loads of these sites. Loads. All used with varied levels of success.

Last month when I was budgeting for the mammoth project that is Silk Over Razor Blades I realised that I was short. Waaaaay short to ensure I could hire the people I wanted to hire to get the quality I wanted. That’s the problem with my current situation; no reliable income but for what I make scribbling. But my primary income from scribbling takes a lot of investment. It’s that curious (and freaking irritating) loop with which all self published authors will be close acquainted.

openclip art - money, notes and coinsDid I think of Kickstarter? Or Go Fund Me? Or any of the dozen others I found?
Nope.
I went up into my attic and looked at stuff I could sell.
-_-

Now… I don’t know what this says about me, but not for one second did I consider asking for money. It just never struck my radar. I talked to my mother about my plans and while she applauded the decision to get stuck in and ‘follow this dream’ she also promised me half of the funds required.
Yikes!
I didn’t start that phone call intending to ask for cash. Hell, I was whining about something totally unrelated and we ended up talking about work right at the end of the conversation. But my mother is just going to give me a wad of cash to help fund this project. She’s also going to hit my aunt and grandmother for ‘donations.’
I told her not to. She will anyway. And they probably will send something my way. They all consider it an investment. Bless ’em.

But an investment? That’s a kind way to think about it. Is that writers (and anybody else for that matter) are asking for when they crowd-fund? Or are they just begging? Is that okay? Does it matter?

A lot of these questions can be answered by looking at the nature of the project. A writer using Kickstarter to raised funds for editing (and eventually giving those backers a copy of their book) is a lot different to the writer using Go Fund Me to raise funds for a new computer. In that second scenario backers/supporters/folk who donate don’t get anything except maybe a thank you. They aren’t buying anything, they really are just donating funds. There may be a future promise (‘help me buy a computer and when my next book comes out you can buy a copy’) but that, again, is of little value to the reader. What if they don’t like your next book? Don’t they get anything for helping you?

Shades of A Swag

Look! I gave Tab £30 through Kickstarter and he sent me all these beeeeeeeeeeeeautiful things!!!
Thank you, Tab. Love yooooooooou! x

Bah. This is one of those posts that full of questions and very little answers (sorry about that) but I wanted to put the thought out there. What do you think? Do you use donation buttons? Crowd-funding or fund-raising websites? How does it work for you? How do you balance what you receive with what you give to ensure it’s not all give and no take?line break, swirling graphics, from openclipartSo how did we do? Heh, this is starting to get kinda funny.
If only because I’m learning (even) more about what motivates me and what makes me freeze.
At least time isn’t totally wasted.

Last week

Locate three blogs that allow (or are requesting) guest posts and approach them with regards to me and SORB (trying a different tactic with this marketing plan lark – previous goals weren’t specific enough)
Hmm. I found two. Didn’t approach either. I’m getting there…. sloooowly slowly. Ha! Though I did find a load of great sites that offer help with organising blog tours and if I’m honest that kinda distracted me. *slaps wrist* It seems that spending time looking for someone to do the work for me is far easier than spending time just doing the work. o.O

twitter icon logo from wiki commons

Choose three social media platforms upon which to focus going forward (choice is between Goodreads, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and peer blogs)
Actually this was quite easy. I kinda sorta knew before I began but having it spelled out makes my job easier. Going forward I’ll be focused on Twitter, Goodreads and peer blogs (which includes my mailing list). *nods decisively* So if you want to keep up with me, check out those places as of tomorrow. ^_^

From remainder of list, chose two secondary social media platforms for overspill work (ie – if there is time once main three are targeted)
Also easy. That leaves me with Facebook and Google+ (yes, I do have a Google+ account!) as overspill platforms.

Write up small article for submission to Writing Magazine and/or Writer’s Forum about SORB
Oh yeah…. Ha!

black and white roller derby girl skaterSpend at least two nights NOT working and combine them with EITHER an early night or a CrossFit/Roller Derby workout*
Yep. Getting better at this earlier night stuff, though my body ached right into Thursday from the last CrossFit workout I did. Since I could barely mount the stairs I figured I’d let myself recover before doing anything daft.

This Week

This is the last full week of September. Time to pull my finger out if I want to stay on track. I’m telling myself (quite firmly) that with Raven’s edits done for the time being, Da Shared Brain should have more time for me. We’ll see.

  1. Approach three peer blogs regarding guest posts.
  2. Write up small article for submission to Writing Magazine and/or Writer’s Forum about SORB
  3. Pick a story to submit somewhere
  4. Spend at least two nights NOT working and combine them with EITHER an early night or a CrossFit/Roller Derby workout*

This week I’m actually going to do it. I’m going to take one of these goals per day and get them done. No more slacking. No more worrying over something to the point that it cripples my ability to function. This week I just do it. I get back on form.

Ileandra’s September Indie eBook Review: A Princess Who Defied Kings

cover art for A Princess Who Defied Kings

Credit: J Kirsch

Author: J Kirsch
Title: A Princess Who Defied Kings
Genre: Fantasy
ISBN: 9780988647213

Words: 57,300
‘Betrayed by justice, what would you do? Princess Najika of the White Kingdom is no pampered princess, but when her wedding night with the Red Knight leads to a terrible crime, it shatters her world, banishing her to a place ruled by a man known to be mad and cruel. With pluck and courage Naji is determined to survive, but with a queen wanting her dead, she’ll need all the friends she can get.’

I suuuuuuuuck! So sorry. Apparently wandering off to visit my mother for the weekend means I can’t get blog posts out on time. Ho hum, hasn’t happened for a while, I’ll try to keep it that way.

For September’s review I return to fantasy, my first and dearest love. This novella is an example of what I call High Fantasy and for that reason alone I was thrilled to get stuck in. Here goes.

Cover:

two starsFor me,t his cover tried to be too many things at once. It needed to be either the scaled background with text OR the cool chick with the blade with the text. Both somewhat detracts from the effect of both and makes them less than they are. And, on an original Kindle, it looks like three images just lined up one on top of the other because it’s in black and white. I had to return to Smashwords just to remind myself that there are elements to this cover I like. The colour choices are especially good. Unfortunately, there’s otherwise too much going on to make this cover as good as it should be.

Story:

three starsPrincess Najika is a no-nonsense, sassy little madam wrongly accused of murdering her recent husband in cold blood. Rather than killing her, the leaders of the trial (including her father) decide to ship her off to a neighbouring Kingdom to marry the lord (Black Knight) there. A sort of punishment for her and appeasement for him.
En route she escapes and madness ensues until the Black Knight saves her arse from a near-miss with some of the guard sent out to retrieve her.

Actually, I like this. A good, solid base for a story including a good starting point. Did she really kill this guy? Why? Are they just trying to stitch her up? What’s the deal with this Black Knight? And so on. Lots of questions, the answers for which are drip fed as the story progresses.

I guess my only problem with the story is that after the middle it got somewhat formulaic. Now the story, but the structure of it:

Chapter starts.

Najika has an issue/gets into trouble. She deals with the trouble or gets help dealing with the trouble. She moves on, foreshadowing the next mayhap which takes place in the very next chapter.

I started to feel as though I was reading a bundle of short stories tacked together because they had a common thread. Obviously there is an element of this in every story (because that’s almost the case) but I personally would have liked a bit more variation in how major plot events dipped and peaked. As they are, they’re quite easy to spot from a mile off and some of the magic is gone when you get there.

Despite that, there were a few nice surprises that I wasn’t expecting and the story completes itself very nicely while laying the groundwork for those that follow.

Characters:

three starsNajika. The Mouth With Boobs. Heh and I don’t mean that in a cruel way, no, no. It was nice to see another female character able to hold her own (most of the time) without having to resort to using her body to get out of trouble (most of the time). Her voice was strong and clear throughout but at times I still felt as though I was only skimming the surface of what she was about. Strong females characters don’t have to be without vulnerable moments and just to be whole, Najika could have done with a bit more of that.
Bronwyn. The Sidekick. The relationship between this woman and Najika was necessary to stop Najika coming off as annoying, but I don’t know enough about Bronwyn. The friendship blossomed quickly but without the depth I needed to see if I really liked her or not. So moments where she should have shone bright and dazzling, I had to work harder than I might have liked to feel it.
The Black Knight. The Bad Boy. Actually almost my favourite character. I’m not sure if that’s a reflection on me or the character, but this chap was a whole lot more fun that Najika. He seemed to have more at stake than she ever did and that made me warm to him all the more (an issue somewhat intensified by the fact that I see Johnny Depp when I imagine him).

Overall experience:

four starsA pleasant little read. A good length, I feel, for the story to be told. At times a little slow, at others, chapters would have suffered no ill effects from being stretched to delve deeper into what characters were feeling and to highlight the stakes (and avoid the formulaic issue I described above).
I don’t remember any typos or formatting issues (which is good) but I do remember a giggling out loud at a bunch of very fresh and imaginative similes and metaphors (which is even better). Good on you J Kirsch. 😉

Final score:

three starsAverage across all scores is a good, clean 3 stars.
I like high fantasy with female leads. There’s more of them now than there used to be and that pleases me. If characterisation and plotting continues in this sort of vein I will be checking out the rest of the series when I have time.
