RS: Guest Post – Monica Corwin

Presenting Monica Corwin!

Going forward, I’m hoping to feature many other authors in my genre. They’re a lovely, talented, totally smexxy bunch and I’m really keen to share them with you. Rather than babbling any more, I’m going to let Monica tell you a bit about herself and her latest release. Take it away Smexxy Lady!

Thank you so much for letting me drop in with my upcoming title: Heart and Souls.

About Hearts and Souls

hearts and souls cover artHeart and Souls follows church detective Constance Grace as she hunts a con man stealing women’s souls.
In the late 21st century, scientists created a serum that gave every person nine lives, also known as souls. Flush with expendable life, Earth collapsed into war and anarchy, leaving the Catholic Church to step in and take control. In a world where the stealing of souls is big business, it takes people like Constance Grace, detective in the Soul Theft Division, to hunt the criminals down and strip them of their remaining souls.
When social-climbing con man, Noah Hannock, plunks himself on the church’s radar, he becomes Constance’s problem. With a brand new partner, Mikon Cross and seven of her nine given souls remaining, Connie has to enter high society under a too-familiar alias to tempt Noah into her web.
While the chemistry between Connie and Mikon is scorching hot, the reality is they don’t trust each other. Each with their own secrets to protect, the hunt for Noah Hannock threatens them both. The only way they can survive is if they learn to lay themselves—heart and souls—on the line for each other.

Hearts and Souls Excerpt

He watched as she pulled her unruly mane up into a messy bun on top of her head. Every time he saw her do it, he couldn’t help but think it was a move specifically designed by women to turn men on. The pale skin of her delicate neck was now on full display, as were her toned shoulders and biceps. Usually he liked his women soft, and while Connie did have softness here and there, mostly she was made up of backbone, hard-toned muscles, and coffee.

“Stop being a creeper,” she said, breaking the spell.

He looked up. She was giving him a pointed look with an eyebrow arched. Somehow he had forgotten himself and sat staring at her. Will this night never end?

“Sorry, I was zoning out,” he said.

“Yeah, on my tits.”

“Really, I wasn’t staring at them. I was just thinking.”

“Uh-huh.”

There was no talking to her. He climbed up and went to his own bed. She was right, but he wasn’t going to admit it. He’d have to hear about it for the next year otherwise. “How are you feeling?” he asked after a few moments of silence.

“Still a little messed up from the drug, but, not terrible,” she said.

“That’s good.” He could tell she wasn’t saying it all though. She sat on top of her comforter, shoulders slumped, as she rocked ever so slightly back and forth. There was no way he could let her stay like that all night. If she was to be tortured then he could at least bear some of the burden.

He got up and walked over to her, moved behind her on the bed, and circled his arms around her upper body. She didn’t move, didn’t even breath, for a few seconds. It was a huge relief when she sagged into him, allowing him to hug her more comfortably.

The intensity with which his heart leapt and battered against his ribcage was astounding. If heaven and hell could merge it would live in such a moment. Her scent engulfed him, consumed him, and made him think of all the things he knew he shouldn’t. It was a shock when he realized she was guarding her thoughts to him. Not effectively, but she was making an attempt to ease his discomfort.

“Here,” he said, shifting his legs open so she could lean back into him and stretch out as well.

Such an unlikely pair they made. Only having met a month ago and now here they were in a gilded hotel room, holding each other gently. He would never have imagined a moment like this between them when they first met. Father Reynolds wouldn’t have either.

Constance turned to face him, and he watched helplessly as she slipped her tongue out and wet her lips.

“I’m going to kiss you, Mikon, unless you stop me,” she whispered, only inches away from his mouth.

Great! Thanks for stopping by, Monica. And… if you guys are looking for the rest of the story to go with that excerpt you can pre-order the story by visiting this site.
Well…? Go, go, go! ^_^

IY: Mah Plans 02/02 & January 2015 Round Up

goal shooting goals from open clip artMonday again. First Monday of a new month. You know what that means, right?

PREVIOUS MONTH REVIIIIIEW!

*ahem* yes, apparently this is the sum of my excitement for the day.
>.>
<.<
I need to get out more.

Anyway! Let’s see how I got on last week first of all.

Actions Last Week

Double check ‘On A Knife Point’ outline and look for holes, make notes if there are areas that need to be addressed
Sorted. I’m sure I’ve done this a couple of times now but I’m paranoid. I’m happy with it. It’s good. It’s the climax of the trilogy, it’s going to be exciting! Can’t wait to start drafting it.

Sleeping blue star from Wikimedia Commons; LadyofHatsWrite 10k of the new novella ‘Dead or Alive’
Hmm. Well… 8k. Not bad considering the week I’ve had. Sickness. Actual work on proofing a dissertation. Days with no water running in the house. Laptop and desktop slowly giving up. …yeah. I’m happy with that.

DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT ‘SILK OVER RAZOR BLADES’
Um. Well I didn’t do anything to it if that counts. :p But I did think about it. A lot. I’m getting excited about it again. I guess that’s a good thing, right? ^_^

Targets For January 2015

Outline (in full) the overall arc of the first 32k words of the drama-triangle and decide how the words will be split between the four characters (which make three groups, unless I plan to give Luke his own chapters. Hmm… maybe…)
Lots of changes here. I’ve  split the words evenly between three characters. I’ve totally dumped the Luke character (he doesn’t really belong here) and focused instead on Ileandra (who is now called Kailah), Michael and Diavian. I’m 8.5k words in, which is more than I anticipated at the start of the month. Hell, I didn’t think I’d start it at all, so that’s pretty damn good in all.

Come up with a better title/phrase for drama-triangle (or better yet, title the damn thing!)
Yep. ‘Dead or Alive.’

Check the outline for On A Knife Point and make sure I’m happy with all aspects
Yep. Can’t really say more than that. 🙂

Changes To My Plans

blank calendar from OpenClipArtThis is a new section to the monthly round up. Last year I reviewed and fiddled my goals in June. This year, frankly put, six months is too long to wait.

My life is so much in fluxx that I need to be able to adapt quickly to all the things that affect my writing. So a month by month review and fiddle is the best way to stay on the ball (and keep all my hair).

In light of that, my overall plans for 2015 now read like this (changes highlighted with red text):

  • Publish ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ through Little Vamp Press by end of May
  • Edit ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ to completion
  • Publish ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ through Little Vamp Press by end of October
  • Draft ‘On A Knife Point’ (min 100k words)
  • Issue all remaining parts from the ‘Chapters of D’nai T’keyah’ novellette for newsletter subscribers (monthly), then switch to quarterly newsletters
  • Write 33-4k words of the new newsletter subscriber story (‘Dead or Alive’) featuring Michael Garran, Diavian Hatara, and Kailah Turner by mid February. Send two updates to subscribers in the two newsletters that will be issued once the schedule becomes quarterly
  • Edit ‘On A Knife Point’ to completion

Targets for February 2015

With the new goals for the year in mind, what do I need to do this month?

  • Complete draft of ‘Dead or Alive’
  • Start draft of ‘On A Knife Point’ and complete at least a quarter of the whole word count (25k)
  • Query the availability of Karen Perkins and Dave Johnson as their help may be required following any additional edits I make on ‘Silk Over Razor Blades.’
  • Send February’s newsletter to all subscribers and describe the changes to come

Activities For The Week

  • Write 10k of the new novella ‘Dead or Alive’

Thoughts…

confident thumbs up OpenClipArtBy my reckoning, on the calendar, I have two more weeks to complete the draft of ‘Dead or Alive.’ I gave myself a week’s grace by starting when I did and by aiming for such high word counts. That has put me in a good position now.

With illness and other responsibilities I still produced 8k words last week. 10k is within my reach and with one good day of output I can exceed that. I’m not aiming to exceed, just meet.

To the rest… I realised early last week that while monthly newsletters to subscribers is nice, it’s stretching me incredibly thin. Especially if I don’t have any news. Dropping to quarterly newsletters with bonuses for new releases or specific news means that I’ll always have something (interesting and relevant) to say. It also means I’ll avoid repeating myself. All good things.

‘Dead or Alive’ will need editing before I start to issue it to subscribers. This is an experimental venture, so I will be doing it another way. Not sure what way yet. I need to work on that, but I do know that I won’t be doing anything to it until ‘On A Knife Point’ is drafted. I also know that if I don’t complete the draft by the time it’s time to start the novel, the novella will be put to the side. Novels have to come first. *nods*

On the whole, I think I’m getting passed my previous distaste for changing my plans. I’m also a lot more lenient with myself. Yes… I experience disappointment if I don’t meet my targets, but the fact that DSB has split the big jobs for the year in a way that gives both Raven and I clear space, means that it’s much calmer than last year. I just seems more manageable. Which is good. I need manageable.

Saying that, I’ll need to confer with Raven (hehe) but I’m thinking of letting DSB in here once a month to talk about her goals. Having ours here helps Raven and I so much, I have to wonder if the same would work for her. After all, she has Caladria and the Joined Up Writing Podcast to be looking into. It needs scheduling in!

So what have you had to change this week? Anything caught you ff guard and forced you to reassess your game? I love hearing about all the writerly things you’re up to. Share folks. Share. ^_^

IY: The Big Day Is… Last Week O.o #Caladria

Yeeeeeah. So caught up in my own news about ‘Silk Over Razor Blades‘ and my not-success-but-not-a-total-failure-either, I completely forgot about something that is a real success. And actual, total, real success.

Do you remember, all those months ago, I talked about a fantasy ezine? I asked if any of you were interested in writing for it and earning a little bit of £££? Well… The first issue of Fab Fables launched on January 25. ^_^

Fab Fables #1 Cover

YEY!

I really can’t think how I managed to forget that. I must have been more upset about Angry Robot than I could admit even to myself because this is a big deal. A mega big deal.

I got involved with The Men from the West, as I like to call them, quite some time ago. I don’t even remember how. But they approached me in August asking if I fancied joining them for an exciting new venture the likes of which the creative world is yet to see. They didn’t phrase it exactly like that, but that was the gist and let me tell you, it wasn’t just tooting their own horns either. I’ve never seen anything like this before. And that is why the whole project is AWESOME!

Anyway, I said yes and, long story cut short, I’m now the Chief Editor for all stories published through Caladria, the first publication being Fab Fables.

I don’t know how to explain it all without going all gooey and fangirl on you, so the basic gist is this:

Caladria (the world) is home to any number of publications in the future. The first of these is Fab Fables (the ezine) which is a monthly, digital publication featuring five/six short stories of a non sequential nature. All stories are set in Caladria (which is a fantasy setting) but the tales range from romance, to crime, to comedy, to thriller, to horror, to political drama. In fact, the only traditional ‘genres’ we probably won’t cover is erotica (heh, sorry Raven!) and sci-fi.

Caladria (the site) is built for the management team, the staff and the fans. Anyone can sign up and interact with the world through the truly awesome maps and wiki pages, all of which are time sensitive. That’s right, you heard me, time sensitive. You look for the wiki page for ‘humans’ at the start of the Era of Primordial incidents (EPI) and it won’t be there. Because humans didn’t arrive in Caladria until almost 1400 years later. Similarly, if your favourite character (lets say… Mbenad) features in a story you like, you can visit his wiki page at the time of his story and see what he’s up to. Then change the setting of the wiki page by a decade or more and see what else has he done. Is he married? Does he have kids? Is he dead? The wiki pages are my absolute favourite feature of the site so far (aside from the map I guess)… I’ve never seen anything like it.

And the best part is, the whole concept of Caladria swings the door wide open for fan fiction writers. Basically… if you see a character you like in issue #3, you can get in contact with us, go through a simple application process and, all being well, write your own story about that character which could publish in issue #6!

We are actively searching for new writers, for people with creative ideas and for fans. If you like your traditional fantasy creatures (goblins, dragons, dwarves, elves) and like in-depth, character centric, stories Caladria should be your new favourite place to hang out.

I’m not going to go on about this much longer, but I do want to take this chance to say congrats and well done to the five authors who appear in our very first issue:

Brittany Zelkovitch
David Trebus
Cheryl Jeanveau
Meriel Green
Cazz Allen

You guys are the ABSOLUTE bomb and I adore you. ^_^

The rest of you… if you want to know what all the fuss is about, this is where you need to go. Laterz, lovelies!

RS: I Haz Planz 29/01

Thursday again. Seems to go by really fast. What’s all that about? o.O

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Complete Deep Edits on 12k words of ‘Second Base’ (which takes me up when Karen shows Dan ‘Black Angelus’ on her laptop – I realise these markers are a bit cryptic as far as you’re concerned, but I can’t really help that. Sorry folks!).
Nope. I’ve had to tweak and fiddle a whole lot more in this second. I can tell I was still writing myself into the story by this point. There are details that need to move forward in the story and even more than need to go back. I even had to go to the first quarter of the story and fiddle some bits there based on what I picked up from the First Pass Read. In light of all that I only got two thirds of the way through. Ah well.

~Proof ‘Malcolm’ and format
Sorted. Now I just need to decide on a suitable release date. Not that I have much time. It’s pretty much today, tomorrow or Saturday. Probably Saturday.

Activities For This Week

  1. Finish the remaining third of last week’s Deep Edits on Second Base.
  2. Complete Deep Edits on a further 12k words of ‘Second Base’ (which takes me to Cindy threatening to tear Dan a new one if he doesn’t tell her why Karen was so upset when she called).

Thoughts…

goal shooting goals from open clip artI got my first review for Sugar Dust last week. You can see it here if you’re curious. I was pleased to see it didn’t slate me down to the ground, though a little disappointed at some of the comments regarding Dan’s character growth. I suppose it’s to be expected; some folk always want more. Though I am keeping that review in mind as I keep working on Second Base, working on rounding him out a bit more. There’s always space for more character growth (says I) and I recently learned that if I want to keep submitting to Breathless Press, that my stories must now hit 50k and beyond. Well… that gives me much more space to play, right? 🙂

This is the last few days of January. Next week I’ll be rounding up the month and chatting about the changes I need to make to my plan to avoid going screwy in the head.

Speak soon smexxy people!

RS: Learning From Editing pt7 – The Speedy Way Is (Sometimes) The Only Way

‘Don’t Stop, Never Give Up’

Yes… I know that’s a line from an S Club 7 track, but I was more thinking of the fact that I really need to finish this series.

So, who remembers this? ^_^ Who remembers me chatting about my experiences in all the different forms of editing I’ve been part of in recent months? Well… if you need a recap, the first post is here and you’ll find links to subsequent posts from that one. This is actually the last post from that sequence, so it makes sense to get it done.

So. Speed.

I’m quite a nippy writer. It’s taken me quite a while to figure out that part of the reason my turn around makes people goggle (sometimes) is because it’s pretty damn fast given my other responsibilities. But that’s not the speed I’m talking about here.

I’m talking about deadlines.

I used to hate deadlines. In DSB‘s old job, she would look at rotas and lists of things needed at such-and-such a time and quite literally sob. It just seemed too much. That’s because (at the time) she was really crap at using deadlines to her advantage to help prioritise and organise. Now she, and by default, I have gotten pretty bloody good at it.

Deadlines with my independent works are all self imposed. I use them to organise myself and plan what comes where. And they can easily be shifted if I need them to. Deadlines from Breathless Press were not so flexible. Obviously if life came and slapped me in the face (as it did once or twice) I was able to go back to Jenn and ask for an extension on whatever I might be doing. Often I only needed an extra day, though once I think I asked for a whole week. Regardless, working within a time frame for someone else gave me the biggest push I’ve ever imagined possible.

Road runner 'go' meme

Meep, meep!

Towards the end, when I was certain I wouldn’t see the manuscript again, I received an email from Jenn asking for another once over of the complete 47k manuscript. Also, because of her deadlines there was no wiggle room with mine. It was a case of just get it done. In five days I believe.

Well! With the help of my goal lists here, I already know what’s coming in my week. It means I also know what I can just shove to one side over something that has to take priority.

I’ve never been so focused. So strict. So ‘up on it.’ And this is the core message of this post, really. Deadlines focus you. They give you a clear goal to strive towards and, if they’re set by someone else, deadlines really do give you an extra shove to get work done. And, of course, meeting a deadline is always cause for celebration.

Sometimes I have to resist the urge just to set a goal, just so I can celebrate meeting it afterwards. :p

How do you find deadlines help with the work you need to get done? Or do you not set them at all? Do you find, instead, that deadlines make you panic therefore making it impossible to do anything? I’d love to hear the spectrum of thoughts on this topic, because I know there is quite a broad one.

Chat back, cats!
