DSB: Real Life Bits 12/04

Heeeeeeeeey you lot! It’s me again. And I have lots I want to share with you today. I’ll try to keep things brief(ish) so it’s not a big wedge of text, but try to keep up, huh? Buckle in. 😉

Write Fit

You know I’m part of the Joined Up Writing Podcast crew, right? Well . . .  in Thursday’s episode (get it here if you haven’t found it yet) I might have put my foot in it a little. Okay, a lot, but can I just say, people say funny things under pressure!say what memeThe episode was about keeping fit while while writing and this, believe it or not, is a big deal for me. I’m sooooo poorly most of the time, it has a lot to do with my fitness and weight and eating habits and blah, blah, blah, blah.

I suppose I can talk more about those specifics another time, but while recording, I jokingly told Wayne that I would do a new little bit of exercise every day and report back on progress in the following episode. -_- Well the episode is out there now. Live. And that bit has not been edited out. *sigh*

So much like when Ileandra and Raven do their goal posts, I’m now accountable.

woman jogging

Yeah right! But give it time. You never know…

Obviously none of you are going to drag me over your knee and spank my legs if I don’t do it – I hope! – but I’d feel bad about saying something and then not doing it. So . . . I have been doing it. I borrowed a set of headphones (decent ones) from a friend and downloaded an app to help me log the things I eat. That, hand in hand, with different exercises I can do indoors or outdoors, long or short, I have been logging my process every day.

It hasn’t been a week yet, so it’s hard to say, but I did get an odd moment of fatigue about about 4pm while sitting in the car this afternoon. That sort of abrupt and crippling crash isn’t unusual for me, I’m sad to say, but I can say that the episode passed sooner than usual. So that’s a plus, right?

Also, with this app, logging each and every food I eat is making me think carefully about what I consume. And the calories. Plenty of slip-ups (come on, half a week!) but I think I’m getting into my stride. Hell, I’m even writing this with a bottle of water beside me rather than a Bubble Tea or rum laced with cranberry juice. *shoves the remnants of Easter egg foil under the table*

Meh. It’s all about baby steps, right?

Caladria

If you don’t know what this is yet, then for the love of all things tasty and delicious, please, please, please check out this site.

caladria logoCaladria is the name of a world created for the purpose of housing the tales of a new fantasy magazine called Fab Fables. I’ve been Chief Editor over there since the project went live and we are actively seeking new authors to write for us. All the time. If you’re curious, or want to write for us, then follow this link for details.

But that’s not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the competition we’re running! *fanfare, confetti and big smiles all around*
Yes, we’re running a short story competition offering publication in the magazine plus a £25 Amazon voucher as first prize. Not only that, but the winner also receives a cut from all profits linked to the issue of the magazine their story appears in. Not only do you get a chance to be published in an up and coming magazine, but there’s money in it for you too!
We’re looking for complete stories of 1,500 to 2,000 words written to one of three briefs. The competition closes on May 31 and there will be one winner as well as two runners up who will see their stories published in later issues.
Rather than reproduce everything here, full details can be found on the Caladria Blog. All that aside, I really do urge you to enter. It’s a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an exciting new venture (we’re the first indie fiction syndicate!) and experience awesome features like the interactive map and time sensitive wiki pages that respond to dates.
Hell, even if you don’t fancy the competition, join us on the main site and become a fan. Or visit our store and get your hands on the free copies of the ‘Guide to Caladria’ which tells you what it’s all about.

Thank You!

I also thought it would be nice to take a moment to thank you all for reading and sticking with me and liking and commenting. It really does make my day when you talk back to me and I love knowing that you enjoy the time you spend reading my brain vomit.

Thank you note! openlcipart

It also struck me that I don’t talk much about myself here, so I thought I’d ask if there was anything you wanted to know specifically.  You know . . . what moves and grooves the lady behind Ileandra Young and Raven ShadowHawk.

Let me know, eh? ^_^

RS: I Haz Planz 09/04

I’m sure this is a significant date in DSB‘s calendar. Wish I could figure out why. -_- I’ll have to work on that as it’s probably something she’ll want to talk about.

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Make a decision on the potential cosmetic changes in the ‘MEO:TFS’ paperback
Decision made. And changes made. The pages really do look better without it, so I’m pleased I took the time to check it over.

~Complete a full read through of the ‘MEO:TFS’ proof and annotate.
Actually my lovely, lovely neighbour Sally went over the book with her keen, used-to-marking-student-papers eye. Coupled with my own readings we’re all good to go! Those changes have been made too.

~Upload those changes to document and order fresh proof
Changes uploaded and good to go. I just need CreateSpace to finish off their own review before I’m allowed to order the proof. They say within 24 hours, so, hopefully it won’t be long now.

Activities For This Week

  1. Send newsletter for this month
  2. Devise marketing plan that can be run through Twitter since that is primary means of doing so these days
  3. Create spreadsheet to record book reviewers contacted including when, where etc, etc
  4. Order new ‘MEO:TFS’ proof

Thoughts…

Another gentle week so Ileandra can do all her drafting. She was doing really well, but being away yesterday and sick today has slowed us both down somewhat. goal shooting goals from open clip artBut we’ll do it. I figure once I have my plan in place for gentle promoting through Twitter she’ll be able to steal some of it for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades‘ so that’s what I like to call multitasking.

Also, spreadsheets are something I find fun. Dunno why but working with tables and numbers that way just gives a mad sense of accomplishment. Maybe I should do more stuff like that.

For now though, I’m putting that all to one side as we need to be a bit of exercise. It’s late, so lets see how many times I can jog up and down the stairs before feeling (more) gross. 😉

RS: Fifty Shades of Grey Movie . . . My Thoughts

I did it. Last week, late at night after attending a friend’s book launch I wandered down to the Showcase Cinema, bought a (small!) bag of popcorn and sat down to watch Fifty Shades of Grey. With the hype more or less over, there were five people in the room other than myself: a group of three giggly girls and an M/F couple looking shifty and embarrassed. I sat in front of all of them, centre of the row, spread out my bags and coat and watched. And analysed. And thought very, very deeply.

And this is what I think (scroll right to the bottom for the TL:DR version).

The Movie Itself

Taken just as a movie? Not bad. It irks me to say it, but it wasn’t a bad movie. It was filmed well, cut well, lit well. The dialogue lacked in places, but you all know my opinions on the source material so I won’t dig at that too much. The acting was wooden in places, but, given neither actor very much likes or thinks much of the subject matter (if various interviews are to be believed) then is that really much of a surprise? Oh, and there were a little too many close ups of lips, hands and eyes, but I guess, in a movie you’re trying desperately to make sensual, those are the tricks you employ. But alone, with no other considerations, the movie was okay.

Book to Movie Conversion

Since books are so close to me, I figure it’s worth including a word or two about this. I think the movie stayed pretty true to the book. It has been a while since I read the book (or the trilogy as a whole, which I still haven’t finished – shhh!) but I remember the slow build of tension between Ana and Christian, the funny and sassy best friend whose name escapes me and the same recurring sensation of WTHFF when Christian came out with that contract. So yeah . . . it did the job.

As a Representation of the BDSM Culture

Well . . . I think it’s a mistake to hold the book or the movie as a representation of anything. This may be something of a switch to the last time I spoke at length about this franchise, but consider this: E L James wrote a book. A book with which she so was pleased that she self published. Then the big publisher came along. Thousands of us, if not millions of us are doing this with the hopes of getting the results she did. Hell, I’m doing this. And all she did was write the book that she wanted to write. She should be applauded for that at least.

But for people to complain that the Fifty Shades franchise is a poor representation of the BDSM culture, I feel, is a little unfair. E L James isn’t a kinky person, at least from what I’ve read and she doesn’t engage in activities anywhere on the BDSM spectrum. What she wrote wasn’t supposed to be real but a story that she enjoyed with flavours of something that, until she came along, wasn’t all that mainstream. If the book hadn’t exploded in popularity the way it had, then who would have known? I’m sure (well . . . kinda sure) that there are far worse books out there that do an even poorer job of representing people who enjoy BDSM activities.

To answer the core question of the above heading, the movie is a shitty representation of what I understand to be BDSM. Conversations and research have led me to believe that the contract Christian outlines is horrendous (not necessarily in all its content but in it’s delivery and intent) and that constant bouncing between full on aggressive and passive-aggressive behaviour is not indicative of most Dominants on the scene. But as an addendum to that answer, the movie should not be expected to represent BDSM culture.

My Thoughts

Knowing what was coming while watching didn’t disrupt the experience in any way. It did make me curious about how the director and actors would handle certain issues and there were occasional instances where I – and I admit this grudgingly – was impressed with what I saw. Most of those instances were those in which Ana displayed a bit of backbone and told Christian to fuck right off. Not that she did this enough, but that’s a character issue. She is young, naive and lonely: she cannot be held wholly responsible for the way things went. Similarly, Christian is manipulative, aggressive and spoilt – y’know, a a prick – but it’s not his fault either. Not entirely.

The whole way through the film I was struck by the way Ana seemed drawn to Christian. Initially it was his looks, then it was his mysteriousness. I’m also fascinated by how obviously terrified of him she is the whole way through. At first it was mere intimidation, going to interview a rich and important man she knew nothing about. Then it was concern over him following her. Then irritation over him trying to control her every move. Following that came the frustration at half-arsed answers to very genuine and necessary questions and Christian’s transparent attempts to weld her to him by constant and extravagant gifts. All different emotions, yes, but at their core: fear. Fear in every single moment she and Christian share together, despite her very clear physical attraction to him.

The next thing to make me lift my eyebrows was how often Ana begged for a ‘normal’ relationship. I growl a little at the phrase anyway, because what the hell IS ‘normal’? I think what she should have said was ‘traditional’, but that’s a debate for another time. But Ana begged and begged and begged and each time Christian’s response was pretty much ‘try it my way, I bet you’ll like it.’ So these are two people with very clear ideas about what they want from a relationship, but neither of them are willing to bend for the other.

So . . . why do it?

And that, folks, is my take away point from watching the Fifty Shades of Grey movie. Nearly two hours of watching two people with their own personal problems desperately trying to fit the other into a mould they were never destined to fit, while making themselves totally miserable in the process. How’s that for a log line?

The ‘Grr, It’s All About Abuse!’ Argument

Christian is an abusive person. Not so much the physical aspects since, if he had a willing submissive who knew what she was getting from the proposed arrangements, there would have been no issue. No, no. Christian is manipulative and passive-aggressive, using intimidation, bribery, self-pity and fear as tools to bring Ana to the point that she felt she had no choice but to say, ‘Show me, then.’ He bullies her constantly, pulls her away from her friends, weedles his way into her family time and never once gives her a moment to breathe or think. If he’s not at her side, he’s texting or emailing her. Someone (and I mean anyone, male or female or gender fluid, whatever – any person!) with the strongest will in the world would have difficulty making proper decisions when faced with that nonsense.

But that’s not what the book is supposed to be about. Nor is that what the movie is about. So to sit in the cinema thinking those thoughts is unfair. So I didn’t. I’m just pointing out the facts in hindsight.

The TL:DR Version

Fifty Shades of Grey is a sad, occasionally funny movie about two people who aren’t supposed to have each other. It’s a fantastic lesson in one simple fact: ‘just because you’re attracted to someone, doesn’t mean you’re supposed to have them.’

IY: Mah Plans 06/04 & March Round Up

Football goal posts from OpenClipArtEvening, bloggers! I’m feeling pretty good tonight. Bank Holiday evening and much done. A very pleasant evening and my chocolate embargo is over for the time it takes to get through the mad amounts of chocolate I have dotted around.

Mmm. Chocolate pizza.

Actions Last Week

Write 1k words of ‘On A Knife Point’ in the remainder of the month (that’s tomorrow, right?)
Yep *ahem* 5,000 words . . . moving on.

Write 6k words of ‘On A Knife Point’ in the remaining six days of the week
. . . 12.5k. Yeah. I guess I got over my block, huh?

Targets For March 2015

Write 65k words of ‘On A Knife Point’
Ha, of course not. But 45k is nothing to be sniffed at. I’m very pleased considering the mess I got myself into in the middle of the month.

Complete fresh edits on ‘Silk Over Razor Blade’s courtesy of Angry Robot comments and send to Karen for formatting
Yep. Got the formatting tweaks back last night actually. I need one more read and then I can order my next proof.

Changes To My Plans

Hmm. Okay. So let’s see where I am. Removed tasks struck out, changes in red and additions in green.

  • Publish ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ through Little Vamp Press by end of May in digital and paperback forms
  • Edit ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ to completion by end of August (I think)
  • Publish ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ through Little Vamp Press by end of October
  • Draft ‘On A Knife Point’ by the end of April (min 100k words)
  • Issue all remaining parts from the ‘Chapters of D’nai T’keyah’ novelette for newsletter subscribers (monthly), then switch to quarterly newsletters
  • Send two updates to subscribers in the two newsletters that will be issued once the schedule becomes quarterly
  • Edit ‘On A Knife Point’ to completion

Targets for April 2015

  • Complete the draft of ‘On A Knife Point’ (45k words to go)
  • Check next proof of ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
  • Set ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ for sale (assuming there are no issues with the new proof)
  • Issue this month’s newsletter

Activities For The Week

Well . . . there is somewhat less time to work this week but there will be less upheaval (hopefully) so I should be able to go back to my usual scheduling. Let’s see:

  • Write 10k words of ‘On A Knife Point’
  • Order new ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ proof

Thoughts…

There. ^_^ That should be fun. A nice gentle (for me, anyway) week of getting the words down. It’s going to be a fun one!

I don’t have a great many more thoughts than that, today. I’m in a good place. Aiming for the end of April will put me behind the original schedule by a fair whack, but I don’t care. Knowing that I have time to ensure I do this properly and know that I’ve done the best job I can makes me feel good. At this point this is all that matters.new ileandra signature,

IY: ‘Bad Guys’ – Is It The Way They Talk?

Bad guys are fun. They dress in a wonderfully sexy way and, utterly without effort, draw us in. We love them. We hate them (sometimes) but we love them. And we love that fact. Tis good. But why? Why do we love them so much? Today I want to think briefly about how they talk.

Steerpike. Anti hero (at least to me) of Mervyn Peake’s Gormanghast trilogy. He’s mean. He’s sarcastic. He’s vicious. He’s manipulative. He’s fiercely intelligent and I love him! This may be more to do with John Rhys Meyer’s portrayal of the character when BBC dramatised the first two books, but it doesn’t matter. Take this line:

‘Then if he lost his books he would be all but defeated. If the centre of his life were destroyed he would be but a shell. as I see it, your Ladyships, it is at his library that our first thrust must be directed. You must have your rights. It is only fair that you should have your rights.’

This to a pair of twin sisters who feel hotly hard done by when discussing their brother, king of the realm who has everything (as far as they’re concerned). And yet it isn’t about them, though he constantly makes them feel that way. No, no, this is because Steerpike is cold and embittered about his tragic start in life, while Titus Groan, the king’s son, needed only to be born to whom, he was to have everything that Steerpike cannot. His words to those sisters are the start of a deep, dark spiral that takes dozens of lives to satisfy his own sense of having been thoroughly wronged. But it’s all about the rights of Cora and Clarice Groan.

Man . . . I still get shivers.

Next! Eric Northman of the wonderful ‘Southern Vampire Mysteries’ (known more commonly as the True Blood novels – thanks HBO!). A 1,000 (and change) year old vicking who happens to be a vampire does his best to apologise for getting Sookie (part fae telepath) harmed as she tries to bring him a message:

‘Angelic Sookie, vision of love and beauty, I am prostrate that the wicked evil maenad violated your smooth and voluptuous body in an attempt to deliver a message to me.’

Heh. Even without the text that surrounds it’s clear that Eric is one sarcastic bastard. And I know that through the course of the books he becomes less of a bad guy, but in the same manner that Spike becomes less of a bad guy through the course of Buffy, he’s still pretty damn bad!

And lastly, in an attempt to stay the hell away from Spike and Buffy (though I’ve now managed to mention him twice!) is Jean-Claude from Laurell K Hamilton’s ‘Anika Blake, Vampire Hunter’ novels. This is another guy who becomes good-bad rather than just bad-bad, but he has some particularly awesome lines throughout the series. Too many to mess with here. But what captures me most is his innocent romanticism, in every word he speaks, laced with an under current of ‘I’m a vampire and I’d kill you soon as look at you.’

Bad guys talk in a particular way. They’re smooth, slick and passionate. Their words are drenched with either burning sarcasm or light-hearted witticisms that cut right to the heart of who they are inside. They’re often honest too, which is an endearing quality particularly when coupled with the fact that most of the honest centres of the reasons we shouldn’t like these people.

Heh, anyway . . .  next week I’ll be talking about the true reason we like bad guys . . .
