RS: I Haz Planz 09/07/15

A nice day to cap a pleasant week. You know those weeks where you just bimble along and stuff happens around you? It’s been one of those . . . but in a nice way. ^_^

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Order first ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ proof
Ordered. And it’s here! Now I’m checking it over. There are some issues with the cover which need to be fixed, but I have the book in my hands and I’m thrilled with it!

~Complete fresh back and front data for solo pieces in ‘Meeting Each Other’ series from ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’ to ‘Bill’
Yes, done. Took a little fiddling, but it’s all sorted now and should be feeding through into both Amazon and Smashwords versions over the next couple of days.

 Activities For This Week

  1. Thoroughly read through the first ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ proof and make changes before ordering the new version with the modified cover (thanks ravenink!)
  2. Complete fresh back and front data for solo pieces in ‘Meeting Each Other’ series from ‘Eric & Morgan’ to ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’
  3. Double check new Goodreads details and make sure I can get into my account. Add missing books to my Goodreads Author Profile.

Thoughts…

Not so bad: all things I can do and do quite easily. Next week will be another of those forced ‘weeks off’ when DSB goes to her LARP. All being well I should get good chunks done from this month’s goals before that happens.

RS: Tropes In Erotica – The Billionaire Alpha Male

Yeah. I want to talk about this because I’ve mentioned it in a couple of book reviews already and I recently spotted a wonderful cover designer on Facebook lamenting the lack of variety in the commissions she receives.

In light of that, I’m going to talk about tropes, the same way Ileandra is currently battering the bejesus out of fantasy creatures.

First Up, What Is A Trope?

openclip art - money, notes and coinsThere are two definitions of the word, but I’m focused on the one that refers to clichéd or over used plot devices and/or ideas. Something specific to a genre or creature that comes up over and over again and is so commonly seen that it is almost a prop or crutch. It’s almost expected by veterans of the genre and can cause surprise when they aren’t there.

There are tonnes of different tropes and I’m going to talk about one a week until I get bored (or find something else cooler to talk about). Hope you enjoy the ride!

The Millionaire/Billionaire/Super-Rich Alpha Male Trope

*sigh* Part of me wants to blame E. L. James for this, but I saw this trope come up dozens of times before I’d ever heard of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘ and I was late to that party. If you look back over my indie book reviews last year, three of those have this super-rich alpha male character as the romantic lead.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I want to say these men come in all shapes and sizes, but that would be a lie. At least in my experience. These men seem to come in two distinct flavours and neither of them particularly tickle my taste buds, if you take my meaning.

The ‘Super-Rich “Bad Guy” Who Learns His Lesson’ Trope

This is the classic bad boy. The womaniser. The man with more money than he knows how to spend. When he does spend it, the £££ (or $$$?) tends to go on cars, alcohol and women who could easily grace the cover of a magazine and not feel awkward about it.

This man starts off trying to woe the romantic heroine with his buckets of tasty moollah and gradually comes to learn that 1) this isn’t the way to win his woman’s heart and 2) he must change his womanising ways in order to prove himself worthy of the romantic heroine.

The ‘Super-Rich Do-Gooder Who Doesn’t Really Want His Money And Tries To Hide It’ Trope

This one is a little more interesting. These men, though powerful and well to-do, often try to hide their money. They refuse to use the cash sitting in their trust funds curtsey of rich parents or lucrative deals on the stock market. These men work with their hands and are far more ‘of the earth’ than their ‘bad boy counterparts.’

They like to make their own way rather than depending on the cash they feel they don’t deserve (and yet they still manage to own beautiful homes/boats/cars/bikes/*insert expensive objects here* and get away without doing any real work like the average Joe Bloggs pulling double shifts at Maccy D’s).

Invariably when these men meet the romantic heroine, they aren’t good enough for her in some way, or they distance themselves when said heroine finds out how rich they are (totally by accident of course!) because that makes them feel that they have nothing in common and that the match is a mistake.

But They Can’t All Be The Same, Right?

Well . . . maybe I’ve been reading the wrong books. I don’t review every single book I read, here or anywhere else. 1) I read A LOT of books and don’t always have the time to review the way I’d like and 2) I don’t always have anything favourable to say. In those scenarios, rather than be spiteful, I choose to keep my opinion to myself. In light of that, it’s difficult to use my reviews on this blog as a guide. However, as I think back over recent reads, I’m afraid, yes, actually, they are. In my experience, the men who fall into this trope tick most, if not all of these boxes:

  • Mega rich (as in, probably owns several homes and/or well established and successful businesses)
  • White (sorry, I just haven’t seen male lead following this trope of any other race)
  • Aged anywhere between 25 and 37 (for some reason, beyond that seems to lead to an utterly different sort of story)
  • Veteran of three if not more ‘intense but ultimately failed relationships’
  • Uneasy/volatile relationship with siblings and/or parents
  • Has at least one ‘best buddy’ character who ‘brings them back to earth’ or ‘gives them a reality check’ when it’s most needed by the plot
  • Is incredibly skilled in something traditionally romantic like playing piano or violin, or painting landscapes/portraits
  • Is stupidly good looking: all tight abs, pinch-able arses and darkish/longish hair (no flabby sods with love handles around here!)
    • Has stunning women falling all over them that they just ‘don’t notice’ when the romantic heroine is around
    • Has previously dated stunning women and proceeds to fall for the plain, but beautiful romantic heroine because she is ‘just so different’

These aren’t bad things. Let me get that point across right now. Nor do I feel that this is a trope that needs to be banished. I merely observe that this is something I see a great deal and I wonder why that is?

Does this mean that there are hundreds of women out there who dream of a rich, good-looking stud who will fall madly in love with their plain, ordinary looks? I’m sure it does. Hell, I’m nothing fancy to look at; I’d certainly feel good about some loaded beefcake wanting to sweep me off my feet (the Funk Master wouldn’t mind, right?).

Text Addition: My Own

I just think that the fantasy needs shaking up a little bit. It needs variety and fresh flavour or else we’re just going to end up with a bunch of stories featuring the same dude with slightly different features (blond vs black haired, likes cars vs boats, prefers boobs to arse) and isn’t that just a little bit boring?

IY: Mah Plans 06/07, June Round Up and Half Year Review

What a great week! ^_^ I feel like so much good has happened this week and over the past six months so  I’m going to enjoy rounding it up for you.

Actions Last Week

~Work through one chapter of the secondary timeline
Three. Hmm. Maybe that’s why the rest of these goals look like they do.

checking off feedback~Make seven review requests (in person/via email/via blogs/via strangers) – go on! Make it two weeks in a row.
One. Aaaah well.

~Create and complete the new blog page
Yep. If you’ve not seen it yet, find it here.

~Insert ‘Buy Direct’ button for physical copies of ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
Yes. In fact there are now buys links for everything Raven and I have produced, all on the ‘Our Books‘ page.

June 2015 Round Up

Hmm. Actually, not that bad:

~Complete deep edits on primary timeline of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’
*DING* And I’m moving ahead with the secondary timeline.

~Update this blog (and website!) to show Saar’s Legacy progress and include sales buttons for physical copies of ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
*DING* Oh, no, wait, damn it! I didn’t do the website. So that’s a half ding. It’s more like a . . . *DI* -_-

~Make 30 separate requests for reviews on Silk Over Razor Blades (don’t panic, Illy, that’s one a day. One! You can do this . . . just breath deeply, okay?)
15. So I managed half. Better than nothing, but not good enough. Thing is, I’m not sure that these review requests are making any difference. I can’t tell if it’s time well spent. I’m resisting because I hate asking for things, but I’m beginning to feel it’s not necessarily an effective way to get what I need which is exposure. Sure, the reviews are great, but unless they drive a bunch of traffic here or to Amazon I’m not sure that it’s going to be worth all this bother. Hmm. Must think about that.

~Contact Dave for discussions re ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ cover art
Sorted. We have some thoughts, but our conversation got interrupted. In fact, I need to ping him another email after our half meeting in the street. o.O

Half Year Round Up

Same as Raven, I’ve been fiddling my tasks for the year as I go, but it’s worth taking a look at what I’ve managed to achieve.

  • Edited ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ following feedback from Angry Robot
  • Drafted a novella (‘Dead or Alive’) that hit 36k words
  • Released ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ as both an eBook and paperback
  • Drafted a novel (‘On A Knife Point’) that hit 89k
  • Sent all parts of ‘The Chapters of D’nai T’keyah’ to newsletter subscribers

Just looking at that gives me the warmest buzz. 115k words I’ve written this year. 115k! And that doesn’t include tasks for PWG, redrafting any of my novels/novellas, or my regular blog posts. It doesn’t include any of the work DSB has done for Caladria or any of the floating bits and pieces I always forget to count anyway like rewriting blog pages and newsletters.

That is an astounding amount of writing and even if I did nothing else I should be thrilled!

Changes To My Plans

blank calendar from OpenClipArt

Well . . . I’m not sure that there is much to change. Keeping up with this list on a month by month basis has been wonderful and I’ll certainly keep going for the rest of this year and into next year too. But let’s have a look anyway: completed tasks struck out, changes/clarifications in red and additional tasks in green.

  • Edit ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ to completion by end of September (including betas)
  • Publish ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ through Little Vamp Press by end of November in digital and paperback forms
  • Start deep edits on ‘On A Knife Point’ by end of December
  • Send two more newsletters to subscribers. Send the first two parts of Dead or Alive, edited fully with feedback from PWG as the freebies.

Targets for July 2015

I know that DSB will be off LARPing again this month. That takes at least three working days out of the month. But . . . looking at the list above and what needs to be done by September, it’s not going to cause too must trouble. Just in case, I’ll be kind to myself this month:

  • Complete deep edits on secondary timeline of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ which ends the ‘deep edits’ process.
  • Start and complete fine tuning of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’
  • Edit first part of ‘Dead or Alive’ ready to gift with August’s newsletter
  • Create cover art for ‘Dead or Alive’ that is suitable for all parts and all three characters

Activities For This Week

  • Complete edits on Crusades chapter of the secondary timeline
  • Investigate means to produce cover art for ‘Dead or Alive’ cover
  • Make two review requests (in person/via email/via blogs/via strangers) for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
  • Read over PWG groups on first section of ‘Dead or Alive’

Thoughts…

I’ve done a big ole loop-the-loop where ‘Dead or Alive’ is concerned. The story is being received so well by PWG that I know it will make a great subscriber gift. In light of that, I want to start sending it to subscribers as a ‘thank you’ for sticking with me. It’s important to me that subscribers get good freebies and this one is perfect!

In 2016 I’ll think about general release and print versions, but this year is about finding out which of the three characters interest people the most; Diavian, Michael or Kailah. Once I know that, I’ll know which one(s) to keep writing about and which one(s) to leave.

As for the rest, it’s no different to what I anticipated before: a small number of BIG jobs which will break down into a tonne of small jobs. Not to worry though, I’m getting good at this. I know what I need to do and how so now it’s just about staying motivated and not slacking off . . . not that such a thing tends to be an issue. 😉

IY: Fantasy Creatures – Unicorns – An Intro

Happy Monday, folks! A brand new month and a brand new fantasy creature to chat about for the next four weeks (if I make it that far — I know even less about these guys than I do about zombies, but it should be nice to check them out).

I’ll do what I did before and round up the the month with a piece of flash (ha, hope I’m not setting myself up for a fall here). In the three weeks prior I’ll talk about what these creatures are, where you find them, my favourite myths with them in and amusing/noteworthy film appearances.

So What The Hell?

Unicorns are horses with a single horn protruding from their foreheads. Think rhino, but prettier. 😉 They are often pictured as white, though I’ve also seen them in silver, black and on one odd occasion, bright pink. Their manes and tails also vary in colour though traditionally, I think they tend to be white too. Though there are some awesome variations.
DomenichinounicornPalFarnese

Silly memes are also something that pop up where unicorns are concerned. No idea why . . . but there you go.unicorn

These creatures are gentle, intelligent and said to have all sorts of powers like healing and invisibility. Depending on what you’re reading/watching, they also have access to manipulative and illusionary magic. Which is kinda cool (but not as cool as this)!

So What?

Well, I like them because they be purdy (!), but also because they are versatile. Next week I’ll talk about a particular incarnation of unicorns that I’ve discovered only recently, along with those from my childhood. Just those two examples alone will give you an idea of the sheer breadth of unique-crazy these creatures can cover.

There are very clear tropes one tends to cover with creatures like werewolves, vampires, zombies and elves, but I’m yet to see that with unicorns. Maybe I’m not well read enough, but these creatures are an untapped source of pure fantasy gold as far as I’m concerned.

Unicorns And Me

I’ve never used unicorns in a piece of fiction before. Now that I think about it I’m quiet tempted too. The examples that spring to mind (that I’ll be discussing in coming weeks) make me eager to at least give it a try, since I think that I could do something new and exciting to them. Something that’s never happened before, or at least not with my personal spin. I see them charging into battle, or baby sitting lost human babies or even disguising themselves as other creatures as strange equine spies.

. . . yeah, not enough coffee tea this morning, that’s for sure!

But if I have to give you my absolute favourite example of a unicorn, then . . . well . . . I can’t believe I haven’t told you about this already:

You’re welcome.

RS: I Haz Planz 02/07, June Round Up & Half Year Review

^_^ Why am I so happy? Go on, can you guess? No?

My ISBNs came through yesterday! Far sooner than I thought they would. This means I’ve been able to order a proof copy of the paperback version of ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’. Ha, I’m so happy I could puke, this is a GREAT feeling! . . . Yes, even the puke! . . . I haven’t actually puked, don’t worry.

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Send x3 review requests for ‘MEO:TFS’
Nope, but I’ve been very busy, as you’ll see!

~Send x3 review requests for ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’
Again, no . . . but I have actually paid for advertising, something I’ve never done before. I’ve paid for a Release Blitz from Writing Marketing which puts my info in the hands of upwards of 200 bloggers and reviewers. Whether or not they decide to take me on is another matter, but Writing Marketing has a level of reach that I just can’t compete with on my own. So . . . we’ll see what that does.

~Complete fresh back and front data for solo pieces in ‘Meeting Each Other’ series from ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’ onwards
No. I guess I might have overdone it this week with all these little admin bits. I kinda knew it was a lot to get through  . . .

~Check out my Goodreads and make sure everything is up to date
Nope. I can’t even get into Goodreads right now! I can’t remember which email address I used to sign up, let alone the password for it, so this one is a null goal. 😦 I’ve emailed support, however. So many they’ll be able to help me out and get me back in.

~Sign properly into The Romance ReviewMy Romance Reviews and update my profile
Soooorted! All done and I put some advertising through there as well. Funny, I have all these credits building up and I’ve not used them, so it’s nice to kinda do something with those. Let’s see what happens next!

June 2015 Round Up

~Get base photography done for ‘Sugar Dust’ cover art in photoshoot with Sarai
😦 It was done, but in the end, time constraints and a change of artistic direction prevented me using the photos for the cover art. However I do have plans for them, so you’ll be seeing some of that work very soon hopefully.

Cover art for Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust~Commission the cover art and be ready to apply one to the other
Sorted . . . you may have seen this pretty lil number early last week? >>>

~Get ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ formatted for ebook and on sale
Yep. See purrdy thumbnail.

~Decide if I want to publish this release through both Amazon and Smashwords, or take advantage of Kindle Select
For now, just Amazon. I’ll look at my publishing schedule going forward and think about Smashwords. Only because it will eat another ISBN if I do. But . . . so far, so good. ^_^

~Send this month’s newsletter
Sorted! Last one until September now. I also sent out the notification for the re-release of ‘Sugar Dust’. A day late (oops!) but done. 😉

Half Year Round Up

Half point of the year! Blimey, that seems to have just raced by. I know that’s one of the absolute worst clichés in the world, but it’s true. It’s barely touched the sides! Anyway, I’m not sure how to handle this because I’ve been reviewing my goals for the year month by month, but I suppose looking at where I am in the same way does the same sort of job.

First up, what have I done:

  • Meeting Each Other series complete in full and on sale in digital and paperback forms
  • Slippers & Chains: Second Base edited to beta standard and sent out
  • Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust complete and re-released in digital form
  • All newsletters issued and ‘Raven’s Diary: The New Pet’ sent out in full

Ha! Put that way, not bad for six months of head down, finger-crippling work. 😉 So how do I treat the rest of the year?

Change That Shit Up!

With half the year let to go, this is all looking pretty manageable. Let’s have a look. Completed tasks struck out, changes/clarifications in red and new tasks in green.

  1. ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ back on sale as an ebook by end of June 2015
  2. Get ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ on sale as a paperback by end of July 2015
  3. Edit ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’ following comments from beta readers by the end of October (preferably by end of August).
  4. Draft ‘Slippers & Chains Three’ (and give it a damn title!) by end of November 2015 (during NaNoWriMo?)
  5. Switch to a more manageable newsletter schedule of quarterly postings with bonuses for new releases when the current ‘New Pet’ story is done.

Targets For July 2015

Hmm. Okay. Well . . . it’s still Ileandra’s turn right now so it’s not time for me to take over. However . . . there are still things for me to do.

  1. Order proofs for ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ and be happy enough with the result to okay sales
  2. Continue to push for exposure: complete at least x2 site questionnaires / interviews
  3. Clean up the front and back data for the rest of the ‘Meeting Each Other’ series
  4. Regain my Goodreads access

Activities For This Week

  1. Order first ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ proof
  2. Complete fresh back and front data for solo pieces in ‘Meeting Each Other’ series from ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’ to ‘Bill’

Thoughts…

It’s been an amazing year. Now that I look everything like this I’m stunned at the progress. Slow at times, but always steady and always forward. I’ve taken very few steps backwards (if at all) despite a couple of knocks.

All I need to do is keep ticking along at the same steady pace and we’ll see what happens at the end of the year. Weird, but I don’t want to look too far ahead, almost like that would be bad luck or something. o.O
