IY: Fantasy Creatures – Unicorns – In Books

I figured chatting about books containing unicorns would easily drag me over the 500 word mark. But now I sit here and think about it, though I’m sure there are plenty of other examples, all I can think of is this:

Cover art for full saga unicorn western

Credit: Realm And Sands Publishing

I read the first of these books (simply: Unicorn Western) at the start of the year and never got around to reviwing it. I may still do so as the book was incredible and so far beyond the sort of thing that I’d usually pick up that I have to say my piece at some point.

The cover pretty much tells you as much as you need to know, as does the title. A western, with unicorns. Not all that hard to understand.

Rather like the unicorns I’ve already discussed, these ones are incredibly intelligent and  possess both magic and healing ability. These unicorns also talk (often rather rudely) and glow around the horn area when casting magic (RAINBOWS!).

Unfortunatley, with this in my head, I can think of no other books containing unicorns right now, though I know there must be some out there. In fact, are you guys willing to chat with me about that? Use the comments below.

Meanwhile the blending of traditional western with something as fantastical (and not real) as a unicorn boggles the mind and it’s hard to see how the pair blend together. But they do. This book and its rabid horde of followers proves it.

This puts me in a fine frame of mind for next week’s challenge which is a piece of flash fiction containing a unicorn. I would like for the creature to feature front and centre and for the abilities to be clear through the telling. I’ll be honest and tell you right now I have no idea what this story is going to be about, who is in it, or when its set. I don’t even have a name.

This isn’t unusual (considering how I spouted the zombie story) but it does make me a little nervous.

Aaah well, what’s that they say about comfort zones? 😉

RS: I Haz Planz 16/07/15

I’m not here. ^_^ You knew that, right? I’m on holiday as DSB sits in a tent readying herself for a two day LARP adventure.

Aaaah . . . and relax!

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Thoroughly read through the first ‘Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust’ proof and make changes before ordering the new version with the modified cover (thanks ravenink!)
Done. Y’know that feeling of ‘Darn it. There’s a single typo on this page meaning I’ll have to change the entire file and reorder from scratch. Hell, I may as well make a few more tweaks as I go’? No? Well that’s what I did. That feeling overwhelmed me over the entire weekend and now the proof copy I have here is covered in purple editing marks. -_- Aah well. I promise I won’t do it again. Even if I have to order a third proof for issues with the cover I’m not going to mess with the interior any more. That is done. Done, done, double done!

~Complete fresh back and front data for solo pieces in ‘Meeting Each Other’ series from ‘Eric & Morgan’ to ‘Simone & Mr Bradford’
Yup. Just ‘Malcolm’ and ‘The Full Story’ to go before everything is up to date including information on the new newsletter schedule and ‘Sugar Dust.’

~Double check new Goodreads details and make sure I can get into my account. Add missing books to my Goodreads Author Profile.
Done. Thank you soooooooooooo much Goodreads Author Services Help! I have no idea how I got so locked out, but now it’s fixed and I’m in. In fact, I got in just in time to find a review on ‘Meeting Each Other: The Full Story’ too. ^_^ That totally made my day. Wanna see? Here.

 Activities For This Week

  1. Complete fresh back and front data for ‘Malcolm’ and, if necessary for ‘Meeting Each Other: The Full Story’
  2. Work out how to put up Smashwords author interview . . . and do so!
  3. Send x1 review request for ‘Sugar Dust’ and/or ‘The Full Story’

Thoughts…

A gentle week. As it should be considering I’m losing half of it to holiday. You’d think I’d have a week off like I did last time, but I feel like I’m just gaining momentum. I don’t really want to do that now, so I’ll just do small things to keep myself in the working mood.

RS: Guest Spotlight – Annabeth Leong

Presenting Annabeth Leong!

Since it’s all about the BDSM right now it’s great to be able to share another author of the same with you. Annabeth’s latest release ‘Challenge Accepted’ promises to be a delicious romp through all things fun and smexxy. In additional to that, the story is femdom (or Domme) and there isn’t enough of that in my life! Looking forward to giving this one a read myself. 😉

About ‘Challenge Accepted’

After being shamed for her dominant desires too many times, Christine has resolved never to date a vanilla man again. She needs a man who knows he’s submissive, and she’s determined to hold out until she finds one.

Until she meets Sam, that is. Christine can’t bring herself to turn down the handsome parkour aficionado, so instead she tries to scare him off with an intensely kinky first date.

When Sam meets her extreme challenges head-on, Christine must decide if he can become the man to serve her every need—in the bedroom, and in her life.

Warnings: m/f anal play; BDSM content includes impact play, foot worship, dominance and submission, clamps placed in fairly extreme locations, and implied piercings.

‘Taken Identity’ Excerpt

Even seeing only her back, Sam had no trouble recognizing Christine as he carried a sack of dirty clothes into the basement laundry room of his new apartment building. He’d liked her tall, thick frame the moment he’d caught her watching him, and he liked the way she moved. She folded clothes with sure, clean gestures. He’d been an athlete for enough of his life that he could immediately spot a woman in full control of her body and presence.

He hefted the laundry onto his shoulder and assumed a casual stance. He made his movements feel easy so they would look easy. “Christine.”

She turned. He liked that she didn’t jump. Maybe she knew he was coming.

He saw her reacting to him—gaze flicking down his body, body shifting to emphasize her hip. Her eyes were fierce, not welcoming. She looked as if she might be about to set him on fire. Apart from that, though, her nod was polite and distant.

Stretching and making a show of it, he set the laundry down beside a free machine. He didn’t know what to think of the contradictions he read in her body language. He was intrigued and wanted to get to know her. She, on the other hand, wasn’t being clear about what she wanted. He couldn’t tell if she was hoping he’d strike up a conversation or wishing he’d drop his clothes into the wash and get the hell out.

Sam had been raised in the type of family that communicated in code, and he didn’t like it. The only way he knew to make sense of the world was to speak his mind. “You up for company?”

She hesitated. “I think so,” she said finally.

“I’m glad.” His voice came out softer than he’d intended, his tone deferent.

There was something about Christine that made him want to address her that way. He stole glances as he started a washer. She dressed professionally, but not in an imposing way. Her body looked strong, but her shoulders were relaxed, her face at ease. She didn’t loom or intimidate, though he imagined she could if she wanted to. She had big, dark eyes and rich, brown skin. Her features weren’t delicate—he liked the bold lines of her nose and jaw—but neither were they harsh. The only hint of real severity he could see was in the way she wore her hair—straightened to within an inch of its life and sharply restrained.

“The weather’s gotten nice,” Sam said, reaching for an easy conversation starter. “Anything you’re looking forward to doing now?”

Christine shrugged. “Not wearing a heavy jacket.” Was that a touch of humor in the curve of her lips? He wasn’t sure.

“Definitely.” Sam kept his voice light. “You recognized parkour. Is that your sport?”

She laughed. “Afraid not.” Sam wondered if she was warming to him, but she was still so difficult to read. He hated the idea of lingering where he wasn’t wanted.

“Look,” he said. “I’d like to get to know you. I’d like to take you out sometime. Are you interested?” He had a nice Italian restaurant in mind if she said yes. If she said no, he’d ignore the flickers of interest he kept feeling from her.

She didn’t agree or refuse, though. Instead, she looked pained. “Why would you ask me that? We’ve got nothing in common.”

Sam stepped back, holding up his hands. “I asked because I wanted to know your answer,” he said, the words low and even. “If you’re not, it’s cool. I won’t bother you about it.” He’d be disappointed, of course, but he wasn’t the kind of jerk who would try to make a woman feel guilty about turning him down.

Christine reached toward him but dropped her arm just before she made contact. “You couldn’t handle me.”

Sam probably should have walked away at that point, but he’d noticed the way she’d almost touched him and the stubborn part of him couldn’t let the challenge pass. “What do you mean, I couldn’t handle you?”

Familiar anger rose to his chest. In high school, everyone had assumed he was a nerd because he was Chinese. He’d been told he wouldn’t be able to handle being on the football team, wouldn’t be able to handle American-style boxing—though everyone also seemed to expect him to be an expert at Wing Chun—and wouldn’t be able to handle going with the other guys on the team to play pranks on the local rivals.

Sam had responded to each of those challenges by proving his doubters wrong, doing everything better and harder than the people who had questioned him. He’d given up on obligatory popular sports to focus on parkour, but there was still a part of him that thrilled each time he pulled off a difficult move, exulting that, yet again, he’d shown them.

Christine’s skin darkened with a blush, but she lifted her chin defiantly. “I’m kinky, okay? I doubt you’re ready for that.”

Sam blinked. “Wow, okay. That seems like something we could sort out after we go on a date and find out if we like each other. No need to jump ahead.”

“No point.” She shook her head, the gesture firm and dismissive. “It’s a waste of time to get to know each other if we’re just going to wind up incompatible.”

“Really?” Sam bristled. It irritated him when women assumed a Chinese guy wouldn’t know anything about sex, and he hoped that wasn’t what was going on. “I have heard about that book, you know. The one all the women are reading.”

“No, that’s not what I’m talking about. I like to be the one on the handle end of the flogger. You don’t want it, trust me.”

Sam had almost no idea what that entailed, but he pressed, annoyed that she’d presumed to tell him what he would and wouldn’t want. “How do you know? Talk to me about it first. Try me.”

“If you don’t already know about it, it’s just not going to work. I promise.”

Sam had never been aware of an interest in kink, but he couldn’t stand assumptions. “Tell me straight-out what you want to do,” he said, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’ll tell you whether or not I want to do it.”

Christine stared as if he’d suggested a really strange plan. It reminded Sam of so many movies he’d seen, times when characters acted like telling the truth was such an odd and original thing to come up with. “I don’t know…” she said.

He grabbed his now-empty laundry bag. The fabric snapped as he yanked it through the air. The fresh, warm scent pouring from the dryers seemed sour in that moment. “Or turn me down. Just don’t tell me what I can and can’t handle.”

Again, she moved as if she wanted to take hold of his wrist and stop him. Sam paused, trying to make it clear he would let her if that was what she wanted to do. They were still for a while, and then he gave up and walked to the door.

“Wait,” Christine said before he could leave.

“Yeah?”

“Maybe. Do you use IM? Can we talk later?”

He shrugged. “Sure.” This was probably another part of the brush-off. Maybe she thought it would be nicer if she offered to chat online. He didn’t particularly like that tactic, but he didn’t feel like criticizing it now. Without expecting to hear from her again, he gave her his username.

Y’know . . . I’m actually super-duper keen to give this tale a go, now! 😉

Anyways, that’s Annabeth and I’d love to know if you take up the book and if you enjoy it. Meanwhile, these are the links you’ll need to do exactly that!

IY: Mah Plans 13/07/15

Aaaachooooooo! *sniff* Yep. Hayfever strikes again, even on a wet and grimy, gross day like this. -_- *snooooooooooooort*

Actions Last Week

~Complete edits on Crusades chapter of the secondary timeline
Man, that felt like pulling teeth. I’ve done it though. Just. Still bits I’m not happy with but I’ll get those on my next run through.

checking off feedback~Investigate means to produce cover art for ‘Dead or Alive’ cover
Yep. I’ve been playing about with Canva as recommended by some of the lovely Breathless Press crew, and I’ve been working in Photoshop, brushing up on my mask/cutting/blending skills. Let’s just say if I do take this route, it’s going to be a LOT of work . . . but it will be cheaper. In fact, if I play my cards right, the only thing I’ll spend is time. Hmm . . . but can I afford it?

~Make two review requests (in person/via email/via blogs/via strangers) for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
Sorted. Apparently if I make teeny, weeny targets for review requests, they are easier to handle. Plus I also have my first very review! Thanks very much to Dane of Social Bookshelves. If you’ve not seen the review yet, I invite you to view it here and his video update on all the books he received for June, here.

~Read over PWG groups on first section of ‘Dead or Alive’
Yep. I know what I need to do now. And given that I now understand how I intend to release this story, it should be fun to get it neatened up. Not sure how to fit it in to the scheduling though. o.O

Activities For This Weekgeneric calendar with mountains from OpenClipArt

  • Complete half the remaining secondary timeline edits (from the 1815 battle sequence, should be x2 chapters)
  • Test drive another couple of ‘Dead or Alive’ cover art options
  • Make two review requests (in person/via email/via blogs/via strangers) for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’

Thoughts…

Don’t want to load myself with two much this week. From Thursday DSB will be off LARPing again which means four days out of the seven day week that I just don’t have. Squeezing these little bits in before she goes should mean that we can all enjoy the weekend in the woods largely guilt free . . . aside from all the alcohol and chocolate of course. o.O

IY: Fantasy Creatures – Unicorns – In Films

Got a new thing I want to try: keeping blog posts below the 750 word mark. 500 if I can manage it. Heh, should be fun. Go!

Last week I talked about how little I know about unicorns. That hasn’t changed much. But there are three films in which I remember their being unicorns and all of them are films I quite like. I’ll count them down.

Five: Bladerunner

This is reported knowledge as I can’t remember anything from this film beyond Harrison Ford. But, according to the interwebs, a unicorn was featured in a dream sequence somewhere in this film, using clips cut from a film further down in this list. 😉

Four: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Fairly certain there’s a unicorn in here somewhere. In fact, I think one of the characters (possibly Edmund?) rode a unicorn into battle after Aslan was raised. Hmm. Will have to watch it again to be sure.

Three: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Nice and easy. Voldemort was drinking unicorn blood to help him regenerate from his mingy, not-really-there body. Unicorns in this world are good and pure (and drawn particularly to females) and have healing/regenerative powers. All pretty standard if you ask me and probably the most recent incarnation of unicorns I’ve spied on film.

Two: Legend

Aaah, Tom Curise and Tim Curry. Unicorns bring lightness and good to the world and one nasty chap wants to kill them off and thus do away with sunlight. With no sunlight to hide from he can leave his cage and do a whole heap of nasty things. In this film unicorns have an otherwordly, ethereal sort of feel. They’re just good and wholesome and though it’s been a few years since I last saw the film I don’t think their powers are ever fully explained the way they are in Harry Potter. Strange, but that just doesn’t bother me.

One: The Last Unicorn

This was one of my absolute favourite films growing up. It’s only since buying the DVD and watching it again that I’ve come to realise how dark and bleak it is in places. And how gruesome! King Haggard loves beautiful things and has sent his giant, fiery Red Bull out into the forests to collect all the unicorns and drive them into the sea. Our heroine unicorn goes off to hunt for them and finds a motely crew of characters on the way, including a washed up wizard and a past-her-best maid Marian style woman who is both furious and delighted to see her. I love this film, all the more because I’ve been able to watch it with grown up eyes. When I think of unicorns at all, this is always what I think of first.

I’m sure there are more. In fact I’d appreciate it if you’d discuss with me in the comments. What films have you come across that feature unicorns heavily (or even in passing)? Have you heard of these ones? Do you wish there were more unicorns on the silver screen?
