IY: Fantasy Creatures – Vampires – The Accepted Basics

Okay! It’s been a while so let’s dive on in with the basic tropes people expect when it comes to those delicious creatures known as vampires. Here are the top five (as I see them) in ascending order.

5: Super strength

Vampires are strong, yo. Far stronger than the average human and capable of fantastic feats of strength, enough to make Mr Universe and all his friends look like puny weaklings. There are examples of them lifting cars, stopping trains, fighting dragons (dunno about that last one, but I’d love to write it!). On top of that, vampires are generally accepted to have spectacular senses, so improved eye sight, keen sense of smell and exceptional taste (heh heh heh).

4: Super duper sexy and alluring

picture of spike from Buffy the vampire slayer

This can’t be ignored. I don’t think I’ve come across more than a handful of examples in which vampires were sex on legs. Nosferatu may be the notable exception to that, but even he fell in love, chasing after a woman who had a hard time saying no.

3: Sensitive to or severely allergic to daylight

A biggie: vampires don’t like the sun. Of course that is not the case in Bram Stoker‘s Dracula (he was merely weakened by sunlight) and of course, the similarly famous (infamous?) vampires of the Twilight saga who sparkle in the sun. There are myriad reasons for vampire to avoid daylight, but avoid it they do. Unless . . . y’know . . . they’re Blade or something. o.O

2: Eternal youth

Vampires maintain the apparent age of their turning. This makes for all sorts of fun shenanigans where vampires (usually male) fall for humans (usually female) who are decades, if not hundreds of years younger than them. *shrugs* Still, makes for some interesting story telling when you mix old cultures with contemporary ones.

1: Drinking blood

The big one! All vampires drink blood. Usually human blood. I’m yet to find an example of vampires in film or literature in which they don’t do this. Some vampires may have matured beyond the point of needing blood, or they survive temporarily on animal blood but they do still drink it. Always. It’s their food and is often (though not always) linked to sex.

Bram Stocker 1847-1912I guess my favourite traditional example of vampires has to be that of Bram Stoker. His vampire is able to express the deepest, most powerful love, and yet Dracula is a violent force of nature, capable of destruction in a manner few humans can dream. Not only that, but Stoker knocks the daylight issue on the head, simply by stating that, like the bat, day is not a vampire’s natural time, though he is capable of moving about in it. He is simply weakened. It is one of the tropes I’ve taken and used extensively in my own vampires, largely because I’m too damn lazy to work around stories that must take place at night. -_-

The most creative reason for avoiding sunlight I would (grudgingly) award to Stephanie Meyer, since the sparkling skin thing is certainly something I’d never heard of before she did it. Similarly, it’s a pretty damn good reason to stay out of the sun if a vampire is trying to stay below the radar. But the underlying messages of that and the rest of her books piss me off so much that I have trouble saying anything good about them without growling through my teeth.

So . . . there we are.

I must admit, I also very much enjoy the device employed by Charlaine Harris, her synthetic blood (True Blood) is a brilliant way to bring vampires forward into contemporary society and yet make them safe to be around. Sure, they still have trouble with daylight, but they aren’t forced to attack humans to survive which means they are able to run businesses, raise families and gain political power in a world that knows and acknowledges them. Very clever. ^_^

More next time!

RS: I Haz Planz 22/02/16

This is probably going to be a very short post. Ileandra finished working on ‘On A Knife Point’ last night and, you can probably guess, that I’ve barely had a look in while that was happening. DSB has been well and truly focused on vampires rather than smexxy smut.

Actions Over The Past Fortnight

~Complete deep edits on ‘Shh, The Kids Are Sleeping’
Nope. Not even looked at it.

~Complete first draft of ‘Not Another Blind Date’ (after figuring out what’s bothering me about the words I have so far)
Nope.

. . . told you it would be short.

Activities For This Fortnight

Let’s try that again, shall we?

  1. Complete deep edits on ‘Shh, The Kids Are Sleeping’
  2. Complete first draft of ‘Not Another Blind Date’ (after figuring out what’s bothering me about the words I have so far)

Thoughts . . .

If you’ve been following DSB’s blog (which is here), you might have an idea of what’s going on. Half term, lethargy, illness and injury has made working pretty difficult. Hopefully this fortnight will be a better one for getting things done.

RS: The Back Seat Of My Sister’s Car, Out Now ^_^

Woohooo, back again and I’m pleased to say that the third story in my Smexxy Snippets series is out today, lovingly titled: ‘The Back Seat Of My Sister’s Car.’

One women. Two men. One car. One naughty fantasy

When Pamela uses her sister’s car to collect her boyfriend and his friends from basketball practise, their sweaty bodies and stinky clothes lead her to put them in the back seat. Conscious of her sister’s near obsessive desire for cleanliness, she also decides to visit the local valet before returning home.

Mark and Bobby have other ideas.

In the face of light-hearted cajoling and after recalling a drunken conversation over the weekend, Pamela drives to Shagger’s Field; a park too small to deserve the title ‘field,’ but aptly nicknamed in other respects.

Parked up in the open, alone with two sexy athletes, Pamela must now decide how important it really is to keep her sister’s car clean.

IY: Mah Plans 15/02/16

It’s been a week of major up and downs. Most of my ups are related to writing (so that’s good, right?) while my downs include a potentially torn Achilles tendon and an inability to walk without a limp. DSB is practically pulling her hair out as she can’t run at the moment. I know how she feels.

Still, it’s worth looking at what I have achieved. Focus on the positives, right?

Actions Over The Last Fortnight

~Work through a quarter of the ‘On A Knife Point’ deep edits, we’re talking about 22.5k words
Well . . . 22.5k would have been chapter ten. I’m now working on chapter 22 (o.O) and somewhere in the middle of that I’ve totally dumped four chapters and yet retained my wordcount of about 80k. Yikes. I’m pretty convinced that if I hadn’t had such a shitty weekend in terms of work, I would be on the home stretch. As it is, if I can maintain this rate for the next fortnight, I’ll be done before the month is out, even with the Sprogs on half term.
Rawr.

~Get Crossroads out of the way
Oops. Barely even looked at this. I’m 2k words in mostly because I’ve been so distracted by OAKP. Ho hum.

Activities This Fortnight (complete by 28/2/16)

  • Complete deep edits on ‘On A Knife Point.’ Meh, why not?
  • Switch Crossroads ‘deep edits’ into Scrivener and read

Thoughts…

It has been something of a crazy fortnight. I’ve been mad-focused and, up until Thursday, nothing was able to break through that. I don’t imagine I’ll be able to maintain that same level of single-minded focus for another two weeks, but if I can get close to it I’ll be in a good position.

So . . . Resistance is out today and Crossroads is next on the list. After that’s done Saar’s Legacy will be nearly done too. Lots of endings coming up. Feels like the end of an era . . . o.O

What’s next? Well let’s see what comes.new ileandra signature,

IY: Dead And Alive, Episode Four, Out Now (#Giveaway)

Hi guys! I’m pleased to let you know that the fourth episode in my paranormal serial ‘Dead And Alive’ is out today. It’s named ‘Resistance’ and goes back to Diavian Hatara and her troubles.

Enjoy!

S1E4 Resistence (Diavian)d

Injured, alone, rejected by the only woman she has ever loved, Diavian Hatara has reached an all new low.

Her response?

Well . . . humans aren’t the only creatures who turn to food for comfort.

Satiated and healed from a fresh infusion of blood, Diavian considers her options and realises she has none. Kailah is her only hope for a safe, fulfilling life and no choice remains but to make her see that—even if she must do so by force.

But now the past is catching up to her and the trail of devastation left by her search has brought the Assassins right to her doorstep.

Now she must choose between saving her own skin or warning Kailah of the approaching danger. No problem, except bumping into Kailah again may be just as dangerous as tangling with the Assassins.

Woohoo! And, to celebrate, I’ll be giving away a copy of this and the previous three episodes to one lucky winner. All you need do is write a comment on this post, before Feb 25, telling me the most creative way you’ve ever responded to an emotional/physical/spiritual disappointment. Diavian eats (people), what do you do? 😉

The best (most creative) response will receive Dead And Alive, episodes one, two, three and four in the format of their choice (epub / mobi / pdf).

Have fun! 😉

RS: I Haz Planz 08/02/16 & January 2016 Round Up

Whelp, that’s one month of the new year down. Nadda bad, right? ^_^ And it went so quickly too. I suppose I should be used to that, but it’s still a shock to look back and realise just how much I’ve accomplished.

Actions Over The Past Fortnight

~Complete editing on ‘The Back Seat of My Sister’s Car,’ upload and list
Sorted! All completed in preparation for release on February 22.

~Draft ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?’
Done. It’s a sweet little story, far more so than many of the others snippets I’ve written so far. I have a soft spot for this one.

~Draft ‘Not Another Blind Date’
Half way through. I actually got bored. Ha, can you believe it? I think that means there’s something wrong with my outline if I don’t even want to finish the damn thing. Whatever the case, there’s only a little left to go, but I just couldn’t get myself to finish it. Ah well. This week, I guess.

January 2016 Round Up

SS02 - Domme~Ensure the release of my second Smexxy Snippet (‘A Domme At The Club‘) releases as planned on January 22 2016 on both Amazon and Smashwords
All done. ^_^ See the links above to check it out.

~Draft the next two Smexxy Snippets (‘The Back Seat of My Sister’s Car’ & ‘Shh, The Kids Are Sleeping!’)
All done. In fact, I’m skipping ahead with ‘Sister’s Car’ and other snippets in the series (see above).

Change That Shit Up

Rather like Ileandra, my list is stupid-long, so I’ve removed some of the nesting until I get to those parts later in the year. New tasks in green, changes/clarifications in red and completed tasks struck out, just like before.

  • Complete the Slippers & Chains series in full
  • Release the first ten Smexxy Snippets
    • ‘A Domme At The Club’
      • Release
    • The Back Seat of My Sister’s Car’
      • Draft
      • Edit
      • Format & list
      • Release
    • ‘Shh, The Kids Are Sleeping!’
      • Draft
      • Edit
      • Format & list
      • Release
    • ‘In The Back Row of the Cinema’
      • Draft
      • Edit
      • Format & list
      • Release
    • ‘Guess Who’s Coming For Dinner’
      • Draft
      • Edit
      • Format & list
      • Release
    • ‘Not Another Blind Date’
    • ‘It’s Fun To Share’
    • ‘So . . . I Bought A New Toy’
    • ‘Because Magic Is Sexy’
  • Plan some type of series/serial that I’ll enjoy writing for the foreseeable future

Targets For February 2016

I’m rethinking my monthly release schedule for these snippets. Not that I can’t do it—it isn’t actually difficult since I’m so far ahead—more that I don’t want to saturate my readers with too much all at once. I know the stories are short and priced very low, but it could end up a case of too much of a good thing.

In light of that, I’ll be shifting the Smexxy Snippets releases to every other month (after March so that my schedule doesn’t clash with Ileandra’s releases of Dead And Alive). Sure, that will make the whole series last a little longer, but there’s nothing wrong with that. It also means I can relax still further and ensure that everything really is as perfect as my CDO demands.

SS03 - CarAnyway, that means this month will look like this:

  1. Ensure the release of my third Smexxy Snippet (‘The Back Seat of My Sister’s Car’) releases as planned on February 22 2016 on both Amazon and Smashwords
  2. Complete and list the fourth Smexxy Snippet: ‘Shh, The Kids Are Sleeping!’
  3. Complete the draft of ‘Not Another Blind Date’
  4. Draft ‘It’s Fun To Share’

Activities For This Fortnight

Easy! Right? Heh, we’ll see. So, given that there are only three weeks of the month left, this is how I’m going to spend this first fortnight:

  1. Complete deep edits on ‘Shh, The Kids Are Sleeping’
  2. Complete first draft of ‘Not Another Blind Date’ (after figuring out what’s bothering me about the words I have so far)

Thoughts . . .

I think that’s plenty to be getting on with. I’m also letting my mind draft with regards to my new serial/series idea something that I won’t mind writing one/two instalments of, per year. Now hard focus on it yet though, not until all the Smexxy Snippets are complete at least as far as first draft.

RS: The ‘SM’ In #BDSM – Part Two, Humiliation and Degregation

I suppose it would be kind to leave a warning here before you start. Many, if not all, of the links (and pictures) in this series of posts are totally NSFW. If you want to have a look, do, by all means, but don’t be surprised if you find naked boy bits at the other end . . . or girl bits.
Happy? Let’s go.

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

This is another interesting aspect in which my knowledge is limited. In my reading around and questioning folk, I’ve discovered, as ever, that there are dozens upon dozens of different aspects to humiliation and degradation.

Like other activities under the BDSM umbrella, humiliation is deeply personal, as folk can feel belittled and/or humiliated by a variety of different things. For some, it is name calling or clothing designing to highlight/accentuate physical features a person may not be proud of. For others, the act of taking orders can be hugely humiliating, particularly if they are proud people outside of BDSM. Certain sexual activities can be degrading too; forced oral activities or a specific sexual position may serve to demean, humiliate or degrade a person while they experience pleasure.

There are all sorts of reasons why a person may find this pleasurable and a plethora of blog and articles covering the same discussions again and again and again (and again!). The answers you get depend on a great deal on the sort of site you visit and the people you speak to.

A number of my internet searches turned up sites that discuss SM and the desire for it as a severe mental disorder. However in speaking with people across various blogs and forums, I’ve learned that they don’t see it as such. It is simply another facet of the loving and caring relationship they share with their partner and/or top (remember, not all of these relationships are monogamous and they aren’t necessarily romantic either).

Personally, I believe, for some, there may well be past/childhood traumas worked through by practising SM (or any part of BDSM) but this is not the norm. For some, it really is just their personal kink, but of the beautiful tapestry of likes and dislikes that makes us all different.
