IY: Mah Plans 07/09/15 & August Round Up

Hmm . . . Consider the last couple of weeks a blip that meant I needed to slow down. Things have been much smoother this week. Not just because I had so little to do, but in my attitude to it all.

Actions Last Week

~Decide which cover option I want to use for ‘Dead And Alive, Episode Two’
Done. At last! I was freaking out, but now I’ve done that, I’m nearly ready to list it as a pre-order (and in the meantime I can get the file edited to completion).

checking off feedback~Collect ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ from beta readers
One down. Three to go. When I have them all back, I’ll get on with working on the comments. So far, however, the comments I do have, confirmed something that I realised in the middle of the week while I was reading the file on my own. I read ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ all the way through and then immediately chased it with the raw, first draft of ‘On A Knife Point.’

Lenina, as a character still needs a bit of work. She doesn’t have holes exactly, but she changes a lot between ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’ and ‘On A Knife Point.’ That’s good, she’s supposed to, but the changes need to happen through the course of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ and they don’t.

So . . . that needs fixing.

August 2015 Round Up

~Leave ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ alone while betas enjoy it
Yes. Despite what I said above, it was all ready September before I began to read. :-p

~Publish ‘Episode One’ of ‘Dead or Alive’
Eeeeyup! Find it here.

~Send x10 review requests for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades’
11 sent.  Three acceptances. One promised pimping session. Six no responses. One opportunity to pay for exposure (which I’ve had to decline). In truth, that’s actually a pretty good return. But I still don’t think it makes sense to push this as hard as I have been. I need to focus on coaxing people to leave natural reviews. A work in progress.

Changes To My Plans

Completed tasks struck out, changes/clarifications in red and additional tasks in green:

  • Edit ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ to completion by end of October (including betas, final proof and formatting)
  • Publish ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ through Little Vamp Press by end of November in digital form
  • Publish ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ through Little Vamp Press by end of December in paperback form
  • Start deep edits on ‘On A Knife Point’ by end of December
  • Send one more newsletter to subscribers.
    • Send the first episode of ‘Dead And Alive’ as the freebie in August
    • Include a teaser for the second (and third?) episodes of ‘Dead And Alive’ in November
  • Publish Season One of ‘Dead or Alive’ episodically every two months (from August)

Targets for September

  • blank calendar from OpenClipArtEdit ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ with a particular focus on Lenina’s character growth—show the transition!
  • Finalise cover design for ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ with DaveJ
  • Clean up ‘Dead And Alive, Episode Two’ and get into pre-order status

Activities For This Week

  • Continue using notes from PWG to improve ‘Dead And Alive Episode Two’
  • Chase missing beta comments
  • Read through received beta comments and make notes

Thoughts…

Unlike last week I feel pretty positive about what needs to be done. You may notice, however, that a lot of changes have been made above. This is mainly because I’m beginning to understand that I need to slow down.

want to rush. I want to do everything. I want all my work out there and available for people to see, but I can’t. If I want to produce the best possible work, I need to ensure I take my time over it and smooth out known issues when I find them. This is why I’ve separated releases of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ into paperback and ebook. Perhaps, I’ll even shunt both to December. Who knows?

Yellow happy smile from wikimedia commonsIn truth, I’m really pleased that my first beta to respond pointed out an issue that I’d discovered upon re-reading. It immediately let me know that I was right—and cut out any potential quibbling—and left me open and willing to consider working on those issues. Cheers Lisa! ^_^

On top of that, the snippet of ‘Dead And Alive, Episode Two’ I took to PWG on Saturday got torn to shreds. I was thrilled! . . . yeah, that’s weird, I know, but I went in there thinking ‘This isn’t quite right. What the hell have I done wrong?’ And now I know what the problem was. Since then I’ve hammered at that snippet and the next one, shaving off something like 700 words of faff and flab. The scene is supposed to be a fast-paced, terrifying attack. It now feels far more like it. ^_^ Can’t wait to take it back in again.

Basically, I’m enjoying myself again. I’m busy, I know that, but that’s not a bad thing. So long as I take iddy-biddy steps, I won’t fall into the same trap of despair that I did before.

Heh. Yup. Because that’s so easy to do, right. 😉

IY: Fantasy Creatures – Dragons – European Dragons

These guys, at least in western society, will probably be closer to what you think of when someone says ‘dragons.’

There are some excellent pictures, but rather than littering this post with lots of them, I’m going to give you a little gallery to browse at your leisure.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Attributes

If the pictures above aren’t enough to give you a clue, then these are the basics:

  • Wings.
  • Big ass teeth
  • Tail
  • Four legs (sometimes two)
  • Spikes and/or ridges along the spine and tail
  • Able to breathe fire from their mouths
  • Tough or scaled skin

There are also other aspects like:

  • They tend to hoard gold
  • The live in caves or underground lairs
  • They have a rotten temper

Depending on what you look at, a fiery breath weapon isn’t the only one in a dragon’s arsenal. The wings and tail can cause incredible damage on their own and the colour coded beasties of Wizards of the Coast’s, Dungeon and Dragons series of games and books (squee!) have their own breath weapons and personality types. Red = fire. Black = acid. Blue = water. White = ice . . .

In Legend

I’ve already discussed—briefly—a couple of different legends/myths surrounding dragons. These examples were primarily from the Christian religion and feature saints fighting dragons, almost as a parallel of man’s struggle against the evil that is Satan. I’m not making that up, by the way. The word ‘dragon’ comes from the Latin word ‘draco’ which I believe means snake or serpent. Adam and Eve, anyone? But prior to the influence of Christianity, dragons were viewed as benevolent (and here I’m thinking specifically of the Welsh dragon, Y Ddraig Goch).

But Wait, There’s More!

Darn tootin’. It doesn’t stop there. There are dragon myths and legends all over Europe, all with a slightly different flavour. I dare you to check out any of these other types and tell me they’re not awesome.

  • Slavic dragons
  • Russian dragons
  • German dragons
  • Romanian dragons

Yeah? So What’s A Wyvern

A slightly lesser known variant of the dragon, that’s all. Dragon shaped (reptilian, wings, tail) but with only two legs. Also, since these creatures are often associated with ice and water you generally won’t find them breathing fire.

They do pop up every now and then, though they are often mistaken for dragons because of the similarities. But there is an example I’ll bet you recognise what you see it. One probably still out there and on the roads right now.

Look familiar? ;-)

Look familiar? 😉

Title: My Secretary, My Mistress
Genre: BDSM Erotica
ASIN: B00LJ84KOE

But Isabelle won’t be ignored.

It’s time for this secretary to reverse the roles, and she’s got a plan to bring her boss to his knees.

However, Isabelle is after more than just revenge, she wants her boss to let go of his inhibitions and let Isabelle take charge.

From now on, she’s going to be the one giving the orders.

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

Cover:

. . . I feel like I shouldn’t like this. But through getting through so many of this stories it’s quickly becoming plain that I don’t have a particular ‘type.’ Either I like something or I do. This . . . this I like. A lot. ^_^

Story:

Following a roaring night of impromptu passion, Isabelle wakes to see Grant (her boss!) sneaking out of bed and leaving her behind. The following day, at work, though she expects discretion, she doesn’t expect to be roundly ignored. For a full week! By the end of it she decides to show Grant, once and for all that ignoring her is a terrible idea. Cue smexxy!

Characters:

Isabelle: The Secretary. The story is primarily from her POV and I think that was for the best. She’s smart mouthed, keen on what she wants, when she wants it, but instead of being irritating – as she might have been! – this character managed to wrangle me onto her side pretty quick. And Not just by pulling the whole ‘oh, woe, he didn’t call me after our dynamite shag’ gag. No, no. She felt . . . real, which was fantastic.
Grant: The Boss. My first thought was ‘idiot!’ My next thought was ‘oooh, you’re going to get it!’ But again, I understood his plight and sided with him reasonably quickly when it became plain he’s not just a douche. And beyond all that, finding a submissive man, written well is a pleasure I don’t often get to indulge in. This representation ticked all the boxes for me.

Eroticism:

Hooooly, fucking fuck! This book sizzled and I wanted it to go on for a hell of a lot longer. The scenes we did get were delish, and, even if there was no outright sexual activity, the tension remained sky-high and tingle-inducing. Lovely stuff.

Overall experience:

A fabulous read. I only wish it was longer! I had a ball following these characters and raced through the book in record time.

There was only one problem and I do, unfortunately, have to mark this item down because of it. Typos. Grammatical errors. Everywhere. 😦 I dunno if it’s a poor proofreading job, or if I’m lucky and I got hold of an early version where these little niggles were caught, but they kept popping up and each time I did, it jarred. A pity, because the book itself was incredible and I enjoyed it immensely.

Final score:

Average across all scores is 4.6, which rounds out to 4.5 fireballs.

Yep. Just a few little niggles dragged this one down, but not enough that it’s made a huge impact. If you’re looking for a saucy little story about a kinky little Domme getting her way over a squealing male submissive, then nab this book. It’s free (at the time of writing) and certainly worth nabbing.

For the record, I’ve already snagged the next took ‘My Secretary, Her Fantasy’ and I’ll be reading that one soon because the ending . . . woah, the ending for ‘My Secretary, My Mistress’ . . . just read it, okay. 😉

RS: I Haz Planz 03/09/15 & August Round Up

Better than last week. I’ll say that right now.

I almost feel human again. I say ‘almost’ because I’m having to get used to my standing desk all over again and, if I’m honest, it feels a little odd. Aaah well. I also went to the gym this morning and, apparently, exercise is good for you. Who knew? :p

Actions Last Week

little green tic~Format Kindle and Smashwords versions of ‘Second Base’
Sorted! At last! Took ages, but it’s done. *phew!*

~Make the list of all those who are to receive ARC copies of ‘Second Base’
Now that I’ve had a proper look at this target, I see that this is one of those instances in which Ileandra and I got a bit mixed up. o.O She’s the one with the ARC list, not me. There are folk I can send ARCs to (Advanced Reader Copies for those of you who aren’t sure) but I don’t have a list. So . . . if you think you might want one . . . let me know. 😉

~Continue writing ‘Slippers & Chains: Three’ (min 2,000 words)
Nope. And given what DSB had to say on Tuesday, I’m not sure that I’m going to either. I’ll give it another week and see what my heart says. It may be time to hand back to Ileandra regardless. *sigh* Aaah well.

August 2015 Round Up

~Complete beta edit of ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’
Sorted. Needed less work than I worried it might. That’s always a comfort!

~Format ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’ for paperback and ebook release
Done. All three vendors accounted for: CreateSpace, Kindle and Smashwords.

~Commission cover art for ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’
Nope. I’m still really reluctant to go to someone else. Maybe I’ll give Ravenink a couple more weeks? o.O

~Make list of who will receive ARC copies of ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’
Yeeeeah, see above. Though, to be honest, I can’t really send ARCs without the cover art anyway. 😦

Change That Shit Up!

checking off feedbackGiven DSB’s frame of mind right now, I’ve no idea how this is going to pan out. Regardless . . . let’s see where we stand. Completed tasks struck out, changes/clarifications in red and new tasks in green.

  1. Edit ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’ following comments from beta readers by the end of October (preferably by end of August).
  2. Draft ‘Slippers & Chains Three’ (and give it a damn title!) by end of November 2015 (during NaNoWriMo?)
  3. Publish ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’ by 21 November 2015

Yes . . . 21st November. Seems an odd date, kinda stuck at the end of the week, but it’s the sister’s birthday. I’ve always liked to use significant dates for releases.

Targets for September 2015

As ever, there really isn’t that much for me to do. Which is good . . . I suppose . . .

  1. Draft a 13,000 words of ‘Slippers & Chains: Three’

Activities For This Week

  1. Write 3,000 words of ‘Slippers & Chains: Three’ (that’s 500 words a day)

Thoughts . . .

checking off feedbackI think I’m falling down by trying to treat this project like others. Problem is, I don’t write like Ileandra. I can’t. She can spit 10,000 words on a good day left to her own devices: I can’t.

So if I treat ‘Slippers & Chains: Three’ as a little project on the side of whatever Ileandra is doing, there’s less pressure, which should free me up to just enjoy meeting this characters again.

I have a lot lined up for them—it’s going to be great getting back into their heads for the terrible problems I’m about to throw at them—so it should be fun. So long as I make efforts to keep it that way. 500 words a day should help.

RS: Tropes In Erotica – The Shy Girl

Aaaaah. ^_^ I like this girl. She’s almost, kinda sorta DSB (ha! no, really) before she got over the whole ‘noooooooooo, can’t go outside!‘ issue.

This trope usually is a woman (I don’t think I’ve come across the ‘Shy Guy’ yet) and she stays home, usually with a cat or something else small and furry. Not that she’s reclusive exactly, but she either:

  1. Has been terribly burned by past experiences
  2. Can’t keep up with the mad/outgoing/highly sexual best friend
  3. Simply prefers her own company

Not only that, but this girl is usually wicked-talented at something crafty/art. She draws/paints/writes/sculpts . . . you know the sort of thing. And it’s usually through this craft that she meets the guy that eventually chases her.

And it is a chase. This girl is never the instigator or the pursuer, she is the pursued and that chase tends to make the body of the story. It’s not that she doesn’t want to be loved or known, or taken out, more that she needs to be coaxed out of her shell.

This trope is often blended with the Crass/Foul Mouthed Best Friend to make the contrast between the pair very clear. What I’ve also found is that this trope can be compared with the Secretly Sexy Woman, but The Shy Girl doesn’t go through quite so obvious a metamorphosis. Instead she is usually permitted to go on being shy, but with a man on her arm who ‘loves that about her’ or who ‘just wants to protect her.’

Of all the tropes I’ve covered so far, this one—I feel—runs the biggest risk of throwing out twee plot lines.

Aaah well. She certainly has a home and, just to make sure I’m not making this up, I’m going to keep reading and reviewing. 🙂
