RS: The ‘D’ In #BDSM – Part One, Discipline

I suppose it would be kind to leave a warning here before you start. Many, if not all, of the links (and pictures) in this series of posts are totally NSFW. If you want to have a look, do, by all means, but don’t be surprised if you find naked boy bits at the other end . . . or girl bits.
Happy? Let’s go.

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

Stepping aside from bondage for now we’re going to look into the ‘D’. Discipline. While it is a bit of a misnomer to say we’re leaving bondage behind utterly, discipline in a BDSM sense can be enjoyed without the frills and spills of the other three letters. But there IS a lot of overlap.

First of all, (because it amuses me) here are portions of the Wikipedia definition of the word:

Discipline is the suppression of base desires, and is usually understood to be synonymous with self-control . . . Discipline is when one uses reason to determine the best course of action that opposes one’s desires, which is the opposite of Fun.
~above links form part of the definition as provided by the wiki.

That last phrase amuses me greatly: ‘the opposite of fun.’ Surely if the D aspect of BDSM were no fun, people wouldn’t indulge quite so much? Anyway . . . here’s a definition that makes far more sense in the context we’re discussing:

Discipline is the use of rules or punishment to control or reward
behaviour in a sexual context.

Heh, thank you very much, ‘What is BDSM.com‘!

The reason discipline is so often linked with bondage and/or dominance and submission is because discipline tends to occur between a dominant and a submissive and one of the tools or methods for applying that discipline can be through restriction. Example: if a submissive speaks out of turn or in a manner that displeases their dominant, they may be bound to prevent speech for a short amount of time.

But discipline isn’t (and shouldn’t) be confined to punishment. Discipline also involves  rewarding good or desirable behaviour, usually in a way that is pleasant for both the recipient and donor. This varies a great deal—as do all the cool things in life—but can involve sensation play, penetrative sex, teasing or simple a pat on the head and a cheerful ‘well done.’

A great example of this, for me, as to be the film ‘Secretary’. Waaaaaaaaaay before the likes of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ came along, a dominant man plays games with and indulges in B&D, D/s and SM behaviours with a younger woman.Secretary movie posterIf you haven’t seen this film really do take the time to watch it (y’know . . . if that’s your thing). James Spader is excellent (and creepy, in a sexy way) and Maggie Gyllenhaal does a fantastic job as the occasionally naughty, often cheeky secretary (the poster is freakin awesome too!).

So if you’ve ever spanked your other half for ‘naughty’ behaviour or ‘rewarded’ them for good ones it could (might not, but could!) be classed as discipline . . . oooo you saucy minx, you!

IY: Mah Plans 12/10/15

The good feeling continues! After this morning’s quick look at ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ I’m even happier. Plus I have more energy, I’m more awake and actually keen to get started on work (even though it’s now 8pm)!

Actions Last Week

~Work through x5 chapters of beta commentschecking off feedback
I think I did eight yesterday . . . maybe even nine! See, on Saturday, I had a moment of panic when I realised how close November is and that I wasn’t even half way though! Now I’m much further along and happy with the changes. Lenina is far stronger and her arc much clearer. Phew! Now just to get to the end and make sure the end all matches up with the changes.

~Complete first read of ‘Episode Three’ in preparation for deep edits
Oops. I know I forgot something!

~Make a decision on what’s bothering me about the cover art for ‘Episode Three’ and outline plans to correct it
I know what’s bothering me now: it sucks! Okay, that’s a bit loose, but what I mean is, it doesn’t reflect the content of the episode in the same way the others do. So I need to work on the imagery I want and how to the themes and/or action with the cover. Heh, that’ll be fun. -_-

Activities For This Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

  • Complete the beta edits for ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ (five chapters to go!)
  • Complete first read of ‘Episode Three’ in preparation for deep edits
  • Make notes following read of ‘Episode Three’

Thoughts…

Right. Looking good. I think this all hinges on how the next week goes. I have a lot to do—including days out and away!—but a combination of early mornings, early nights and turning off Facebook 😉 should keep me going strong.

Oh, and lots of this:

IY: Walking The Razor’s Edge Progress Report

Yes . . . I realise I’m supposed to be talking about elves right now, but it’s been a while since I’ve talked to you, at all about ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge.’

For those of you who don’t know, this is the second novel in the Saar’s Legacy trilogy and I’ve been hammering away at editing for a good chunk of this year. My editing diary is actually available here as well as on YouTube (the channel is ileandraXraven) and though I was using that for my pre-beta edits, I’ve since been working on the comments received from beta readers.

This has taken longer than I hoped since I realised that Lenina’s character arc was lacking in key places and need plumping out significantly. There’s a lot going on in this novel and though she does a fair amount of her growing here, it was important to me that her growth appeared natural and inevitable, given the things going on around her and the choices she has to make.

After a marathon editing session yesterday, I’m at last in the final stretch and I’m hoping to be done with this pass by the same time next week. That should leave me only with proofing and formatting before I can go ahead with the final stages. Wheeee!

I’m talking about this, however, because this process has taken me a long time. Far, far too long. Given that I want to be releasing several books a year, I need to be able to write a novel faster than 12 months (and by write, I mean draft, edit, re-edit, beta edit, proofread and format).  In light of that, I’ve done a lot of reading around increasing productivity and output without sacrificing quality.

little pink worm reading a book; bookworm from OpenClipArtTwo books particularly have changed my mindset on this and I realise now that the reason this process is taking so long is because there was not sufficient planning at the start.

I was always proud to call myself a pantser. In more recent years, I’ve become a planster. This works for me too zine degree, but every project takes too long to complete. So, no more. It’s plain to me, especially looking at the way I work (and what DSB highlighted on Saturday), that if I want to produce quality, engaging stories, with a real hook, and write them in a decent time frame, that more background work is required.

There will be more on this another time, but I wanted to put this thought out there, along with all the other things that DSB discussed in her last post.

2015 is coming to a close, for sure, but 2016 is going to be mega exciting. Waaaaay more exciting than this year, starting with the completion of the Saar Legacy trilogy. I can hardly wait!

DSB: If You Want Something Done . . .

quotation-marksIf you want a job done, give it to a busy person . . .

I’ve heard that said before and, while I was working, knew this to be true. I was stupidly busy on my initial team as deputy team leader and the work load only increased as time went on. I didn’t get any more money (no, I’m not still bitter -_-) but I did get through a hell of a lot more tasks. So I understand a bit of my work ethic.

At home, working for myself, it’s all a little different, but the basics are still the same. I need to show the same level of organisation, forward planning and discipline as I did then, even if the rewards are immediately visible (y’know, in the form of a monthly pay wage).

There are LOTS of things I want to get done and, lately, I’ve not quite been as good at doing. This isn’t because I wasn’t working hard—because I bloody have been!—but because I’m not working in a smart and/or efficient way.

Studying the last few months I see lots of nights tucked up in the house at night, ignoring the other half, hammering at the things I want to get done, working through a list that never seems to ease off.

No more.

No more! no sign from opeclipart

In order to look after myself better and to spend more time with my children and my (amazing, supportive and just all-round WONDERFUL other half) I need to be smarter about how I spend my time. I need to identify my best working times and utilise those. I need to understand what jobs I can do well and which ones need to be delegated or outsourced. I need to give less time over to useless and empty activities like trawling my Facebook feed and looking up silly memes.

But . . . I also need to eat healthier and move more and sleep more. Some of those things I’m already taking care of and if you didn’t know, I have another blog which focuses more on me as an increasingly healthy (hopefully) person.

These things are all connected, whether I want them to be or not and I’m test driving a couple of new changes to my lifestyle to see how they affect 1) my health and 2) my writing.

More Sleep

Sleep is important. I can no longer deny that I’ve not been getting enough of it and that the nights that I’ve managed 7-8 hours of sleep are followed by days that are far happier and efficient. I need to do more of that, which means getting to bed well before 12am which, once upon a time, was not unusual for me.

Yes, yes, I know that in my days as a free and happy single (!!!) I’d go to bed at midnight, wake up at 6am, do my yoga and then go to work. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) I’m not that person any more. I’m a mother now. I’m a writer full-time (ish) and I’m running my own business (yes I am!). I’m also one half of a couple and it’s no longer just me I need to look after. Not that Dave can’t look after himself, he’s totally capable, I only mean that there are more people to be aware of now and not just my children.

Things need to change and for me to be bright, cheerful and functional DSB, I need to be a well rested DSB.

So, from now on, bed no later than 10pm, 9pm would be better if I can swing it. *nods*

Shifting Schedule

closed diary clipart from OpenClipArtWell . . . going to bed so early means I’m going to lose at least an hour of work each night. No two ways about that. But I figure, if I’m strict enough about my bed times, I can put that hour in the morning instead. This way I’ll still be getting my 7-8 hours of rest, but my work time is split across morning and evening.

This is for two reasons. 1) Mornings, apparently, are good for me (if I can just get out of bed). I’m fresh, I’m awake and pretty much unscathed by the trials of the day. It’s a good time to get first drafts down, for instance and means that the most important job of that day (writing!) is done before the day starts. 2) I do a lot of snacking in the evenings. I eat a whole heap of baaaaaaaaaaad foods which all contribute to the problems I discuss on my other blog. Going to bed earlier automatically stops me eating at those late hours because I’ll be asleep! That smells like win, if you ask me, and I’m keen to see what sort of difference this change has on my health over all.

More Time Off

Yeeeeah, this sounds crazy, but I’m starting to realise that the more time off I have, the more work I get done when I am working (thanks Maria! You’ve said it to me so many times, but now I’m actually doing it I can feel the difference). It doesn’t have to be much, but at least twice a week, I should be looking into doing something that’s just for me. Whether it’s going to see a film, or hanging out with my friends.

My friends . . . they’re so good; they appreciate what writing it is to me and how important it is, but between that and my children I so rarely see them now. And that just kills. I’ve also seen in what was actually a rather upsetting and painful way, just how distant I’ve become from some of my friends. Things were happening that I knew about in a vague way, but the true impact of the things caused more ripples than I knew. People were really, really hurting and I wasn’t around.

I felt—and still do—feel terrible. That’s not the sort of friend I want to be and I know that giving more time to those relationships (that I honestly do treasure and value) will make me a better person and a better writer. Both things I want very much.

Clipart lemon from OpenClipArt,

So that’s what’s happening! I won’t promise to check in with you about how that’s all going, mainly because I’m also considering reducing posts to this blog in the near future. That’s a a post for another time, but be aware that a reduction is on the cards. What I will say is that if this goes the way I hope, the results will be pretty obvious in how the rest of the blog functions when Ileandra and Raven have their turns to speak respectively.

I’m going to be busy. Very busy. But I’m going to be busy in a way that doesn’t drive me into the ground and keeps me a bright and happy person. Wish me luck!

RS: I Haz Planz 08/10/15

A week into October and . . . something happened. It’s brilliant! I’ve been working on Slippers & Chains Three’ (now tentatively named ‘Picking Out Curtains’) and I’m over 5k words in. In four days! WHEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I love this whole writing in the morning thing (DSB is going to talk about this on Saturday) but so far, all I can say is that it’s working and that since The Sprogs switched to daily nursery, I’ve never felt so productive and in control of what I’m working on. Oooo yeah.

Yes . . . I’ll be using this GIF a lot.

Actions Last Week

blank calendar from OpenClipArt~Write up stand-in blurb for ‘Slippers & Chains Three’ to go in the back of ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’
No. I decided against this late in the week when I realised that I just didn’t know enough about the story to write a blurb for it yet. And at that point I hadn’t written a word, so it just seemed silly to try. Then I did a little snooping around and realise that in the ‘Upcoming From’ or ‘Coming soon From’ sections of other books I’ve read, only titles are included. Well, sometimes there is a blurb or a line or two, but, for the most part, I see just the title. So w
hy should I mess with that convention? Besides, it means I can focus on actually writing the piece rather than panicking over what the blurb needs to be.

~Double check formatting on all three versions of ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’
Disorganised Raven is Disorganised! Three versions? No, no. I have a Smashwords version of the file, but I remembered (too late to avoid the work!) that I’m testing Amazon’s power by only selling ‘Slippers & Chains’ through Amazon. That means I only have two files to worry about: Kindle and CreateSpace.
-_-
Aah well. It’s done now. No need to worry. And . . . if I change my mind later, the file for Smashwords is ready.

~Complete all background admin for ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’ across Amazon, Smashwords and CreateSpace (do not upload files yet)
Pffft, ‘do not upload files.’ This was before my cover was complete (yes, more good news!) so ignored that part of the goal. The Kindle version is now up and available for pre-order. The CreateSpace file is under review with the design team and I’ll soon know if I can order a proof.

~Write 1,000 of ‘Slippers & Chains Three’
^_^ At the time of writing, I’d written 5,671 words. By the time this post goes live, that figure may be closer to 6,550 if I do a little more. I’m SO chuffed with the progress and loving the effect of sitting down to write in the morning. Why oh why didn’t I do this sooner?!

 Activities For This Week

  1. Order proof for ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’
  2. Write 5,000 words of ‘Slippers & Chains: Picking Out Curtains’ ^_^
  3. Write a fresh Smexxy Snippet

Thoughts . . .

checking off feedbackSo! I’m a happy bunny right now and thrilled with the progress made through a series of very small changes. My drafting eye is back, I’m less tired and feeling lighter and brighter about all my prospects.

Man . . . I’m a bit of a yo-yo where mood is concerned, but I’ll not deny that the good bits feel really, really good!

Oh, and who wants to see my shiny new cover?
