What Films Can Do…

I found this post in my ‘drafts’ folder and felt a pang of shock when I realised that it’s a year old. I haven’t sat on my yoga ball since I was pregnant, so it must be almost year to the day! I’ve no idea why I didn’t post it at the time, but here it is now. Enjoy! 🙂

So I watched Secretary a little while ago.

Secretary movie posterI remember being drawn to the cover of the DVD (what’s not to like about a woman bending over and gripping her ankles like that?) and then realised that it had both Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader in it. I’ve adored James Spader since Stargate, where he played this lovely, long-haired, linguistic geek, but I’ve not really seen him since. I’ve just not looked. Realising that Stargate predates Secretary (by almost eight years!) I figured it would be nice to see James again.

I started out watching the film on my yoga ball, stretching out my back because I’d been sitting in a not-so-great position all day. Maggie came along, kicked things off, but as soon as she got to the office, I realised I couldn’t sit on that ball and expect not to fall off.

James Spader was so deliciously creepy! I mean really, totally, wonderfully creepy (!) and realising that was how he played the character meant that I had to sit properly to pay attention. A couple of scenes made me really pay attention and I came away from the whole thing with a little tingle in my legs and a short story forming in my mind.

By the time I made it to bed and pulled my laptop into my lap, I had two characters in mind and the outline of an opening to the story that I knew would stop me sleeping if I didn’t start. So I did. At the time of writing this post, I’m 491 words into a story of undetermined length, featuring a loud mouthed, domineering business woman who works beneath a dull witted, meat-head of a man who has just brought his son into the company to be her secretary.

The second I started writing I realised that Raven was loose. Not that it wasn’t me, but more that the subject I had picked and the direction the piece was going was already far removed from my usual fantasy head. I had stepped very quickly into that headspace where Raven is most at home and when she rules the roost. I have to say… I liked it! I still like it and I can’t wait to see what comes out of me when I next put my fingers to the keys on that piece.

In fact, this is how I opened it:

There is something utterly delicious about leaning over my desk.

I don’t have to be doing anything special; just leaning over it is enough to send little thrills of pleasure shooting up and down my legs. When I take my hands back to the tops of my tights, underneath my skirt where the sheer fabric slides beneath my fingers like silk.

Another sensation I enjoy.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. I suppose I should explain how I got here in the first place and why on earth I would be leaning over my desk, tights exposed in the middle of my office on a busy Wednesday afternoon.

Naughty, naughty, naughty.

I’l keep you posted on how it progresses. 🙂

I haven’t written any more of this story, although I have found it again. Reading it now, as one might expect, gives me a little wriggle of amusement as I realise that even in the space of a year my writing has improved a ton! I know that sample is only a first draft, but I’m still gratified to see that even those have improved in the space of a year.

Have you guys rediscovered any writing recently? Maybe half completed stories, or blog posts you never managed to publish? What are you going to do with them?

Sunday Snippets Critique Blog Hop 12

Button for blog hopYo! What a week it’s been. The last one of the holiday (for some) so next week back to normal. I got to go back to my peer support training and my parent and baby group as well as signing off at the job centre (YES!).

Basically, this has all put me in an AMAZING mood which means that it will be much easier to edit the story I’m working on. Your comments have all been fabulously helpful, so I’m going to give you the next 250 words, immediately after last week’s snippet.

“Where were you?”
“Shops. We ran out of milk.”
The policeman made a note on the tatty pad of paper before him. “Did you leave anything on when you left?”
“What do you mean?”
He spread his hands in what was supposedly an explanatory gesture. “The oven? The kettle? The TV? Anything that could have started a fire.” His voice filled the room, lapping against the walls and rolling back into the space within like cresting waves. “It all started very quickly from what I can tell.”
Shrugging, Laicee returned her attention to the rough knot of wood on the table. She used her forefinger this time, picking at the wood as if the lever the rough spot free.
Small flakes of ash drifted to the surface as she lowered her head, falling from her hair like grey rain. She smeared it against the backs of her hands. “We ran out of milk.” She repeated. “So I popped out. I was only going to be five minutes, so I left everything on. Even the oven.”
Laicee looked up again, her gaze skimming past the officer sat opposite to his companion in the corner. She stared at him, willing him to speak. His silence made the hairs on the back of her neck prickle like ant’s feet. A bead of sweat rolled down her cheek and off the end of her chin. When it hit the table, she saw that it too was stained with soot.
“And you’re sure there was no one in the house?” The first officer leaned over the table. “Your husband?”
“No one.” She murmured.

As always thank you for stopping by and thank you for your comments. I’m deeply grateful for any and all suggestions, ideas and nit-picks you have; I welcome them. I hope my words in return as as useful to you as yours are to me.

Submissions Update

I just realised that even though I’ve mentioned a hell of a lot of competitions and intiatives that I’ve entered, I’ve not come back to you about any of them! Fail.

I’m sure you’ve guess that since I’ve not come bouncing into view with big grins, capital letters and exclamation points, that I’ve not won anything. You’d be right, but I feel it’s important to pause, take stock and remind myself of what I have done, particularly at times like this in which it feels like I’ve done nothing at all.

So…

January
Full Circle, a short story submitted to Flash500
~The closing date for this competition was 31 March so judging will be happening now. I’m still waiting to hear back from these folk.
Silk Over Razor Blades, a novel submitted to the Amazon Breakthough Novel Award
~I didn’t make it through to the next round of judging. I’m not too devastated over that considering that pitching is not my strongest point and that’s how the entries were judged. It just highlights where I need to do the work.
Shackle of Gold, a short story submitted to Chudleigh Phoenix
~The closing date for this comp was 31 January so I need to chase it up really. Then again, I’m sure I would have heard back from them if I’d won. o.O

February
Silk Over Razor Blades, submitted to TorUK’s open submissions and to WEM’s Critical Reads Scheme
~TorUK: Another one I’ve not heard back from, though I’d expect this to take in the region of 12 weeks before I get a response. Still, I’ll double check I’ve not missed anything.
WEM Critical Reads: I’m a little disappointed over this one as it was just for a critique. Though the entry criteria is such that I’m probably not on a low enough income to get passed the gate keeper. That’s what I’m telling myself anyway. O.o

Shackle of Gold, short story to WEM’s Mentor Scheme
~This is my second entry to the mentor scheme, with a different story too and I’ve been unsuccessful once more. Either the competition is just SO strong that I’m out of luck, or my work just isn’t of the standard they’re looking for. Or both. Either way, I need to take another look at my writings and see what needs improving.

March
No submissions

April (so far)
Silk Over Razor Blades, The Affair and Clash Of The Animal Kings, all pitched to Carina Press during their open Twitter event last week.
~I haven’t heard back from any of those editors, so it appears that none of them were moved enough to pick up the stories for accelerated feedback. Saying that, I can still submit through their normal channels, so I think that might be next on my list.

There. Not so bad as I thought, but not so great as I was hoping. My aim is to keep submitting, to keep sending my work out there and this list tells me that I’ve not done enough of that. More, more, more! I can’t win anything or progress if I don’t make the effort. So… that’s my mission for this month. At least four submissions (that’s one a week).

I’ve already made a good start with my short story for the revenge competition but I can’t stop there. Need to do more. Go, go, go!Cheerleader from openclipart

The Write Feeling Is Live!

I’ve been talking about this for a while without actually explaining what it is. The time has come!

The Write Feeling; this is the name of my business offering critiques, editing and proofreading services. I’ve been working quietly on getting the background organised and now, I’m live. I’m trading, it’s official.

I am self employed!

Sunday Snippets Critique Blog Hop 11

Button for blog hopGood mooooooorning everyone!

I feel somewhat more chipper than last week. Loosing the sleep and making it back (ish) over the course of the week hasn’t done me much harm. In fact, if I think about it, I’m still getting more sleep these days than I was eleven months ago. :p

Michael jackson thriller zombie - clipartYes, my lads were eleven months old yesterday. They’re not yet sleeping through the night consistently, but they go for faaaaaaaar longer stretches now meaning that Dave and I are significantly less zombie like. In fact, we’re barely zombies at all! It’s all very encouraging and makes projects like the one below a deal easier than I might have expected.

What project, you say? Glad you asked!

My Subs Group have decided to inundate a competition. We’re all (that’s all eight of us!) are going to write a story for a competition that closes at the end of this month. We’re hoping that one or more of us will get a prize. Hell, we’re hoping that one of us will win! That would be fabulous, but more than that, we’re trying to get into the habit of submitting our work. You don’t make progress in the ‘getting published’ stakes unless you make the effort. 😉

So, my snippet today is the opening 250(3) words of my short story. It doesn’t have a title yet (I’m awful at that) but I’m hoping to get that settled in my mind when I start editing.

The limit is 2,000 words so I don’t have a great deal of wriggle room, but I bashed this out last night after putting the kids to bed, hoping that my slowly relaxing state would add an edge to the writing. I’ve no idea how I’ve done since I haven’t looked at it since, other than picking out the first 250 words to put them here. So… I’d love to know what you think. LET ME HAVE IT!

The billowing clouds of smoke, stung her eyes, made them water. Thought she might have taken the moisture for tears, Laicee knew better. She watched the flames pour out of the shattered windows and felt nothing but the faint tingle of warmth against her soot stained skin warring with the chill of the drizzle.
A frantic voice called for help, another exclaimed that a fire engine was on the way. The sounds reached her through the stuffing of shock in her ears, blocking her hearing as surely as wads of cotton wool.
Rough hands grabbed her shoulders, tugged her away from the flames. Laicee spun around striking with both ineffectual fists before she succumbed to the inexorable tugging.
The stranger bore her away from the fire, to the side of the road. He stood beside her, one hand resting on her shoulder as if he knew that she might bolt back at any moment.
They still stood that way, side by side, when the first blue lights flashed into view, accompanied by the wail of sirens.

“Can you tell us what happened Miss Shaw?”
Laicee gazed at the table, picking a ridge of rough wood with her thumb nail. “It’s Mrs.” She whispered.
“Mrs Shaw. What happened?”
“There was a fire.” She lifted her head and gazed into the eyes of the policeman sat opposite. After observing the wry lift of his eyebrows she continued. “What’s to tell? My house burned down.”
“Where you inside when it began?”
Laicee bit her lip. “No.”

Done and done.

As always thank you for stopping by and thank you for your comments. I’m deeply grateful for any and all suggestions, ideas and nit-picks you have; I welcome them. I hope my words in return as as useful to you as yours are to me.
