Mah Goals – wc 18/11

Ugh.

Sorry guys. I totally missed Friday’s post and just haven’t really been around to chat with you all, here or Facebook or even Twitter. I’ve been so wicked-busy, mostly on my NaNo, but I’ve been out of the house a fair amount too. Not a great excuse though; I should be more organised. Let’s see if I can manage that this week.

First….

Since I didn’t manage a post on Friday I suppose there are some things to catch up. Not the NaNo check in (I’ll do that this week) but what I got up to the day before. Ooooh yes. ^_^

I’ve played Bo Burnham tracks for you guys before. I’ve talked about him before. However in the face of everything else going on I’m not sure if I mentioned that I was going to see him live in Birmingham. Well I did. IT WAS FREAKING AMAZING!

A fantastic blend of old material and new material, visual humour and the usual sharp (and intelligent) wit through out. Nothing is out of bounds for this guy and I love that about him. Everything is up for poking at. Four days later I’m still buzzing from how amazing the show was and how close he got while performing. Seeing Mr Bloom at the Cbeebies Fun Day Out in the summerThe dude climbed off stage and into the crowd, climbing onto the seats directly behind me. I like to think I’m not a crazy-fan girl when it comes to celebrity types, but my reaction to just seeing Mr Bloom in the summer kinda stuck a fork in that. I still get tingly feelings in my toes and he was nowhere near me; just up on stage, singing and talking to puppet vegetables. o.O

But Bo… He climbed onto that seat and his backside was a mere foot from my face. I feel terrible at the recurring thought that pretty much goes like this; ‘I should have grabbed his arse. Or poked it. Why didn’t I squeeze his bum? Or at the very least I could have pulled his fucking trousers up!‘ – I don’t care who it is; the trousers hanging off the arse thing; it bugs me.

Anyway.

Yeah.

And then I had to get through the rest of show trying desperately hard to avoid singing along to every song I knew. I failed by the way.

And then….Bo Burnham signs and autographs my copy of his book of poetryWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

I was on a high all the way home. I still am. The back of my mind is telling me to calm down and stop being an idiot, and reminding me that he’s only 22 (or 23? Ha, like it matters!). But his youth is part of what attracts me. Not in a physical sense (you perverts!), though he is (very) nice to look at. It’s more that I acknowledge that if he’s this talented now, he should (hopefully) improve and mature with age. Like cheese.
Mmm cheese.
It gives me the warm feeling that this is only the beginning and that it will get better and continue for a good many years. Meaning that I’ll be able to see him live again at some point. Hopefully often.

There are more pictures, but Dave has them, so if I can just get him to pass them along, I’ll add them to this post later. Failing that, take it from this picture that it was real, it did happen and I’m not making it up. :p

So that was the absolute highlight of last week. And while the buzz from that led me to get a fair number of NaNo words down, it did stop me from writing a blog post for Friday. There was just too much going on in my mind.
Forgive me?

This week is nowhere near as exciting, though if I continue at this pace I may finish the NaNo draft of SORB. That’s quite an exciting thought. ^_^

Work towards completing SORB (at least 12,000 words)
Yes. And change….

Try not to get sick again (yes, I have been stupidly ill TWICE since my last ‘goals’ post)
I have a horrific sore throat and achy limbs, so no. Fail. But at least I’m not throwing up like I was a fortnight ago.

Finish last edits on AI story and get it sent before I miss competition deadline
Yep. Done. Think I finally cracked the dialogue issue I was having. And since I have a similar fear-heavy scene in SORB to write, hopefully what I learned from Love Bytes (that’s what I called it!) will help me out in that regard.

Double check what next competition on my list is
Yep. And I have plenty of time to get the piece written as and when the time comes. In fact there’s two; I just need to pick which of the pair I prefer.

Get at least half of Phoenix story down, if not all
No. I decided half way through the week to just forget about it until SORB is drafted (not necessarily to the end of November). I want to give both my all and I just don’t have it in me to split my focus that way. So once SORB is done I’ll crack on with the short. Not before.

Double check edits on ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’
Oh yeah. Oops.

Chase up models for ‘Carol, Niall & Lin’ cover shoot – so exciting!!!
Yeah, I forgot about this one too. Oops. I think after Bo my brain just went ‘anasdiwh asdkfjwi asdfas 99w34n’ and decided that I couldn’t do any more. *shrugs*

Right. I’d better think carefully about what I’d like to achieve this week then.

  • Finish SORB. It’s a stretching goal, but within what I’m capable of. I’m close enough to the end to do it. So long as I focus.
  • Chase up models for ‘Carol, Niall & Lin‘ cover shoot.

That’s plenty. I don’t want to be silly about it.

How are you guys getting along? I know many of you are doing NaNoWriMo or your own versions of NaNo. I’d love to know how you’re getting on. If you haven’t yet, and would like to, please feel free to look me up over there; I’m under Ileandra Young. And that’s i- (as in ‘igloo’) l- e- a- n- d- r- a…. not double ‘l’ as in ‘lion’ as people seem to keep writing. The name is ill-EE-an-DRA. You gotta get it right or you won’t find me! 😉

Laterz lovelies!
Oh, and don’t forget, to be in with a chance to win one of my give-away prizes, chip in through the comments and tell me what has happened to you recently worth celebrating.

Mah Goals – wc 11/11

NaNo word count 11 nov

No… I’m not kidding. At the time of writing his post, this is my NaNoWriMo2013 word count. ^_^

This is certainly a new record for me. And now, at gone 11pm, rather than going to bed, I’m writing a blog post because I neglected to do it earlier today. Yey me…?

This week has been insane. SO much writing, SO much work and SO much good feelings. I can’t even feel guilty at not reaching all of my posted goals, because the fact remains; I’ve written 50,000 words in eleven days… while spending at least two of those days too sick to get out of bed, while still doing derby training, while looking after my kids, while cooking, cleaning and everything else that needs to be done in this house. And I’ve still managed to sleep and eat (sometimes).

I don’t know how I did it. I just know that the next goal is to complete the novel and that this goal is far more important to me than the 50k benchmark. So… I need to wipe the sweat from my brow, take a swig of water and keep on chugging!

But first…
There wasn’t a great deal of response to my give away of free things (*sniffle*) so I’m going to give folks until the end of November instead. I realised somewhere in the middle of Saturday that it was somewhat cruel to expect folks to be able to read this blog amongst all the other things they’re probably doing this month (including NaNoWriMo) and leave a comment. People are busy, damn it, I know I am, so giving folk more time seemed kind.

So… you have until NaNoWriMo ends to tell me what you have to celebrate for a chance to win one of these three goodies:
The Coldfire Trilogy

My copy of Singling Out The Couples by Stella Duffy

My copy of the Mammoth Book of Best British Crime (7)

Right! Now with that out of the way, onto the goals.

Keep up with the NaNo word count at least; 11,700 words
Erm… yeah. See above. :p

Some of those 11,700 can be my Phoenix Project, so get that drafted
Hmm, no. But the idea is brewing in my mind. I find myself thinking about it at night. So I know, actually, when it comes to write it, that it should just pour out of me, ready to be edited.

Investigate more promotional ideas for ‘Vicki & Lara’
Kinda. I have a few ideas knocking around now including Twitter campaigns, reviews and word of mouth promotion. But I don’t want to do it to death. I’m still learning where that line is between gently reminding people that the book is out there and pissing people off for talking about nothing else. Sigh…

Rwar.
So I think this week I can afford to do a little more.

  • Work towards completing SORB (at least 12,000 words)
  • Try not to get sick again (yes, I have been stupidly ill TWICE since my last ‘goals’ post)
  • Finish last edits on AI story and get it sent before I miss competition deadline
  • Double check what next competition on my list is
  • Get at least half of Phoenix story down, if not all
  • Double check edits on Carol, Niall & Lin
  • Chase up models for Carol, Niall & Lin cover shoot – so exciting!!!

There. That keeps me happy. Looking forward to seeing how this week treats me and what’s in store for me as the days go on. I hope you’re all feeling as positive and chipper as I am. If not, I hope you do soon. x

#NaNoWriMo Check In – Week One

I promised you guys check-ins didn’t I?

Hehee, well considering that I almost forgot today’s post because I’m burning away at SORB, I’d imagine you can guess how I’m doing.

No?

Okay… I’ll tell you.
IT’S GOING FREAKING BRILLIANTLY!Word count as at 3th november

I never expected to be able to pump out words like this. And not all of them are crap either (just some :p).

A pair of pink spotted pants from openclipart

Well… maybe… if they’re this pretty. :p

All those years I swore by pantsing and this year, with a plan at my back, an outline and a good, firm base of background research, I can put my fingers to the keys and type. I don’t have to stop. There’s no ‘Ugh, what now?’ or ‘Crap, how did I get here?’ It just flows and flows and it makes sense. And I know where I’m going. There’s no holes or bumps (insofar as you can say that about a ‘first’ draft). I love my characters. I love what they’re doing and I love knowing (to some degree) where I’m going to send them next.

Hell, if this is what planning a novel gives you over pantsing, I may never write that way again!

Never say never, Illy.

It’s going so well that I don’t really want to jinx it. But I do want to give you a sample. Not too much… first drafts aren’t really to be shared (says I) but this is one of my favourite scenes so far. A scene that didn’t even exist in previous incarnations of SORB!

From the corner of her eye she saw Ray glare at her, but she was too focused on her route to the door to care. She practically ran and heard rather than saw Tristen follow. Reaching the door, she pressed her forehead to the cool, double glazed glass for a moment.
“What’s happening to me?”
The hand on her shoulder made her yelp aloud. She spun around and found Tristen standing directly behind her, so close she could smell the mint on his breath.
“Are you okay?” He whispered.
“Yes. I mean I think so.” She tilted her head back, gazing into his eyes and all the shades of the forest they held. “Just stressed, I suppose.”
“I’m not surprised. You really did help me, today, I want you to know that.”
A warm, fuzzy tickle ran from her head to her toes. “Really?”
“Oh, yes.” He smiled. It was like watching the sun peep up from behind a cloud. “Really.” His voice dropped an octave and Ileandra felt the base rumble of it in the pit of her stomach.
She tried to back up but the door blocked her path.
“I didn’t come here just to show you those photos,” he whispered.
“No?” The squeaky answer didn’t even sound like Ileandra’s own voice. She licked her lips. Clenched her hands into tight fists. Tried again. “What do you mean?”
“I wanted to check on you.”
“Oh.”
He smiled and those wrinkles appeared around the corners of his eyes again. “Yes. You’ve been through a lot, it’s enough to drive anyone to madness. I wanted to be sure you’re okay.”
“That’s sweet of you.”
“It’s my job.”
Every sensible part of Ileandra’s mind told her this was far beyond the call of duty, but somehow, she just couldn’t care.
She stared up into his face and inhaled the minty scent of his breath. She watches his lips part and the line of moisture between them break to showcase the pale tip of a pink tongue through the gap.
Wild thoughts of kissing raced through her mind and she tightened her fists.“That’s kind of you.”
At last, he backed away.
Perhaps not a moment too soon, because Ray chose that moment to stick his head into the doorway. “Everything okay out here?”
Tristen shook himself and glanced over his shoulder. “It’s fine, Mr Young. I was just telling Miss Young how to reach me if she remembers anything else.”
If his earlier actions hadn’t been clue enough the blatant lie cinched it. Ileandra gazed at Tristen and knew then that he was here for more than his job.
She grinned at the understanding that this man liked her and enjoyed the thrilling boost it gave her flagging ego.
Fussing with her hair and half pulling the dressing gown off her shoulders, she stepped to one side and opened the door.
“Thank you Detective,” she purred, enjoying the inner thrill as his gaze whipped back to hers. “I appreciate all your help today.”
He stared at her exposed shoulder. “Um… of course. Pleasure— I mean, it’s my pleasure. I’ll… go now.”
Before he could take a step, Nick thundered down the stairs with his shoulder bag slung over one arm. He hauled his coat off the rack on the wall. “You still here, Detective? I thought you’d be long gone.”
“I’m leaving now,” he said, scurrying through the door with his head bowed.
“See you, babe.” Nick went next, pausing long enough to plant a light kiss on her forehead. “Don’t forget to call the doctor, okay? Let me know if your dad is staying or if I need to leave the office.”
“Sure.” She whispered, cheeks burning with a completely different emotion.
He grinned. “Nice one. Bye Ray.”
“See you, Nick.” Ray waved until Nick slipped out of sight, then turned his gaze to his daughter. “Get some clothes on,” he said, “we need to talk.”

And that’s all you get. :p
Until next time!

Catch Up Blog: Mah Goals – wc 04/11

Not only did this seem quite appropriate because of the lateness of the post, but also because the last time I was walking through town I got stopped by three separate charity hawks while frantically trying to get home. If you’re unfamiliar with the phrase ‘charity hawk’ I only just came up with it, but I’m talking about those well meaning but FUCKING IRRITATING people with buckets and clip boards trying to take your money.

I have no problem with charities; I give to several, but picture this for a second:
I’m frowning, and talking on the phone. I have a push chair laden with bags, a full rucksack on my back and another two carrier bags swinging from the arm not holding the phone. I have two kids in said pushchair, one screaming his head off, the other desperately trying to unfasten the harness to make a break for freedom. And I physically dodge myself out of the way by a good three feet to avoid the clip board totting do-gooder.

All that happening and visible at a glance, and yet these people still approach me with ‘Can I have a moment of your time?’

NO YOU FUCKING CAN’T! DO I LOOK LIKE YOUR TARGET DEMOGRAPHIC? DO I LOOK LIKE I REALLY HAVE TIME TO STOP AND TALK TO YOU AND GIVE YOU MONEY THAT I DON’T BLOODY HAVE?!angry green monster with teeth - from OpenClipArt

Hmm.
Okay… apparently that was bothering me more than I thought.
Sorry.
/rant

So…! Today’s blog post, which should have been yesterday’s is about my goals. How did I do last week?

START NANOWRIMO!!!
Yep and at the time of writing about 7,334 words in. That makes me very happy. A few bumpy days and a rough patch in the second chapter, but caught up well enough to put the smile back on my face.

Change up author profiles at Amazon and Smashwords to better reflect my personas (at the moment they are kinda filler profiles copied straight from here. Not good enough, in my opinion, so they need more work)
Yep. However I’m still not completely happy with them. But they will do the trick until NaNoWriMo is over.

At least start draft of Phoenix short story
Done. I’ll take a brief break from NaNo in the week to get a bit more down, I think. I’d like to take it with me on Saturday.

Get other ‘Meeting Each Other’ outlines out of my head and on paper
I thought I had done that already. o.O But it’s definitely done now. Even sent the briefs to Grace so we can work on more cover photography. Very, very excited about that!

Complete two transcripts
One down. Which is more than I was expected to be able to do. Everyone was ill last week and I’m still not at my best. Hopefully with less outside stuff to do this week (I was out of the house two evenings in a row!) I’ll be able to do a bit more.

This week is all about NaNo. I want to get a bit of a head start because I get the feeling I’m going to need it. Not that there is lots going on this month, but going back to DnD last week and enjoying a run of Zombie Earth all served to remind me that there is life outside of my house and away from my computer screen. I want to do more. It’s healthy. So with that in mind, I need to learn how to balance my time better.

  • Keep up with the NaNo word count at least; 11,700 words
  • Some of those 11,700 can be my Phoenix Project, so get that drafted
  • Investigate more promotional ideas for ‘Vicki & Lara’

I think that’s it. I don’t want to over do it with my head full of cold and my limbs all sore. We’ll see how we go then bump things up again when I’m back to 97% (which is where I tend to rest these days).
