Words: 65,000

‘Irene Roman never wanted to be a hero. She was a scientist living an otherwise normal life and that was enough. One fateful evening, though, Irene discovers a betrayal that undermines everything. One event that, in a literal blink of an eye, changes not only her life, but the future of the entire planet.

Now the world is inhabited by people with powers and abilities far above those of mortal men and women. The repercussions of superhuman battles on the Earth are great and terrible as lives are shattered, communities destroyed, and mankind’s destiny is plucked from its grasp. At the center of it all is Irene, who not only is one of two people on the planet who knows the cause of this unbelievable change, but is one of the few people who may be able to stop it. The only problem is the only other person who does know will do anything in his vast power to keep the world in its terrible altered state.

Cover:

five starsActually, this is a pretty good cover. The sketch is skilfully done and there are enough hints of the tale within to make the image relevant. I particularly like the upside down shadowed figure towards the top of the cover. I didn’t notice it before – thought it was a sword! – but having read the story that makes sense. And I have a clear (I think) preference for covers that do this.

Story:

3.5 star ratingScientist Irene Roman has been working on a piece of tech for several years which is subsequently stolen and used to change the very fabric of the world she lives in. When she next wakes up the world is full of superheroes. Pushed. People with crazy abilities straight out of comic books. And she is one of only two people who knows how this happened.
The book follows Irene as she first tries to understand the process, then decide whether or not she should attempt to reverse it, or live with it.
Actually a bloody good idea. I like the story a lot and the rest of the series has a lot of potential with this as a spring-board. Buuuuut (I know, I’m sorry, there always is one) I think there is a strong potential to alienate folk who don’t or never have read a comic. And comic-to-film adaptations don’t count here because reading a comic is fundamentally different to watching a film.
There are many references to the tropes of comics and the background machinations of various bad guys and good guys. All well and good if you know something about comics, but if you don’t, it can feel a bit clumsy and expositional (I don’t know if that’s a word – I made it up!) which can distract from the very good story happening in the forefront.

Characters:

3.5 star ratingAs the story kicks off there are a fair number of characters but these are the ones I should talk about most I guess.
Irene Roman. The Voice of Reason. The one woman beside the source who knows what happened to give so many people a host of superpowers. This new reality is weird and broken and she has been massively affected by it though not in the same way as the new superheroes (the Pushed). She is… likeable. The repeated dips into the inner workings of her body are interesting the first few times – because that’s the sort of character she is -but as the story progressed that sort of detail took up time that could have been spent looking deeper at the real woman. I like her, but I don’t know her. I’m hoping future books will cover that.
Eric. The Visionary. Eric’s motivations are sweet on one level, heartbreaking on another. It gives weight to what he tries to do and the actions that follow but I ape what I said before about comic book references. It seemed to… easy for me. I don’t read a lot of comic books but I’ve been exposed to them by the readings of others and all the ingredients are there. But something about Eric felt false/fake/forced. One of those. All of those. Not sure.

Overall experience:

three starsAn odd writing style that the writer in me insists could be handled with a bit of editing, but otherwise a clear and easy read. Some of the science swept over me (but that’s good! I don’t feel that I should understand every small thing) and other elements of the action felt lifted straight from any of the Marvel Movies (Iron Man, The Avengers, Thor).
But the fact remains I’ve not read anything like this before and that gives it automatic points up in my book (…no pun intended).

Final score:

3.5 star ratingAverage across all scores 3.75 with rounds out into 3.5 stars.
Yeah. I’m interested, so I would like to keep reading just to see if Irene really does go on as she started, but I don’t think the series will be leaping to the head of my TBR list.

Cover:

I know a chap with a profile picture just like this, except he has his shirt on. Remembering that reminds me I may be a bit bias, but I have to say that this is a great cover. It’s simple, functional, the colours don’t hurt and that piccy is stupidly sexy. A wonderful five-thumbs up from me (no… I don’t need anatomy lessons :-p it’s a figure of speech).

Story:

Annika is a fun sort of girl with a healthy fixation on an unattainable rock star- what? It IS healthy! Or is every young girl with an obsession with One Direction in need of medical help?
Actually…
Anyway! When she gets the chase to interview her absolute favourite rockstar, Damien Cage, she leaps at the chance with both hands extended. Don’t blame her. When she meets him, he invites her to a party the likes of which is well known to all Damien Cage fans. Not only that, but she must decide what that means for her.

Characters:

Annika: Funny, driven, smart. Sexual deviant. The book opens with a great scene that I won’t ruin, but it did give me a great insight into the type of character I was dealing with. For a 15k novella, that sort of character is fine for me, though I think more than that in a single dose (i.e. a novel) would have been too much for me. The fact that this is a series means I’ll probably be able to keep reading.
Damien: Sexy, talented, moral. Slightly unrealistic. If not for Skylar’s warnings on her Amazon page I would complain about that (but why? She’s already said that’s what her books are often about). I don’t know… something about him just didn’t quite feel right as I read. Like he was trying a bit too hard to be the rockstar-with-a-bad-image-that’s-actually-a-tally-nice-guy. Hmm. I’d have to read more of the series to see if that follows through.

Eroticism:

I didn’t realise this was a novella until the end (my own fault, I didn’t properly read the info) but because of that I was expecting more. What I will say, however, is that while there was no rampant-bunny-style sex, there was a great deal of sexual tension that I seriously enjoyed reading.

Overall experience:

I wish it were longer. But as a writer of short stories (and novellas) myself, I think I understand the reason behind it. And yes, I realise that flies a little in the face of my previous comments about Annika, but I also believe that with just a fraction more (still not a whole novel) I would have had more space to possibly change my mind about her.
Regardless, it was a very pleasant read and I’ve not complaints about style, formatting or anything else weird like that.

Final score:

Average across all scores is 4.2, which rounds out to 4 fireballs.
This is certainly one to read if you want a bit of saucy ‘brain candy.’ Yes… I like that phrase. *nods* Nothing too heavy – at least in this one – and even promise of what’s to come to keep you focused. A non-irritating cliff hanger ending too, which means I will be looking up the rest of the series in time. 🙂

RS: I Haz Planz 25/12 ^_^

goal shooting goals from open clip artYes, yes, yes, it’s Christmas day. But since I’m too stuffed to move, full of flu and slightly drunk, what better thing is there to do with my time than write a blog post of goals for the upcoming week? ;-)

Last Week
~Let ‘Malcolm’ rest before even thinking of editing
Well that was easy. *snerk*

~Start to gather together all Meeting Each Other stories for bumper edition with all six stories in it.
Well… I have all the stories, bar one, in an outline document. That’s a start, right?

~Think about next independent publishing project for when Meeting Each Other is complete.
Yes. Ish. I have lots of ideas. I don’t know which one to go with. I may need to spend more time mulling it over.

~Enjoy Christmas
Another easy one. I’ve had an amazing day. Food, drink (lots of), food, drink, food and… drink…. And a new saddle for my bike. ^_^

This Week

  1. Transfer ‘Malcolm’ deep edits back to Scrivener
  2. Consider more of the options for next year’s indie project
  3. Write the review for Decembers indie book review
  4. Don’t get too drunk on new year’s eve

Done. And on that note I think I’ll quite while I’m ahead. Y’know, before I’ve sworn at you or said something daft because I really am slightly drunk and a little bit ill.

Luvs ya! x

RS: Merry Christmas 2014!

Good morning and Merry Christmas, you beautiful fuckers! ^_^

Hope you’re having as pleasant a morning as I am and that your day is looking as bright as mine.

Christmas Stocking

The Sprogs don’t realise just how hard these things were to find!

Additional

Those of you trying to get hold of Simone & Mr Bradford; I learned, on Tuesday, of a colossal cock-up by Amazon, thus leading to the deletion of my book before it even went on sale. -_- It still isn’t resolved (nor will it be until after the festive season, I imagine) so if you can’t wait, go grab it from Smashwords instead with the discount code  ME69P which will work until the end of the year. It’s 100% discount; an apology for Amazon’s daftness and your having to use a system you may not want to.

Have a good’un!

IY: Mah Plans – 22/12

goal shooting goals from open clip artA day late. Oops. But really, there isn’t much to put in here so that’s no biggie! :p

Last week

Pretty good. Most things done or those things that had to change part way through started in a good way. Wheeeeee!

Chase up any Caladria tales that we don’t have yet
Yep. All the stories we’re going to get from this batch we now have. It’s SO exciting, you guys are in for a real treat when the first issue comes out.

Edit/proof (in dialogue with the authors) the stories that I do have. Complete at least three.
Got two done for good. One more on the cusp. Not bad considering there was quite a bit of back and forth between me and about eight other people. I think I’ll just allow myself to be happy about that result.

Try again to outline and begin draft of second Fab Fables story
No. Just no and this is because…

Edit first Fab Fables story using completed set of critique from Phoenix Writers
…This story needs a do over. Not in that the critique was bad (it was actually very positive). More that the story diverged from where it was supposed to go and in order to include those missing elements I’ll need to rewrite huge chunks just to remain within the word count. *sigh* Good thing I enjoy doing this! 😉

Ensure my newsletter is sent out in good time – if you want access to the fantasy piece I’m writing just for subscribers, be sure to sign up!
Done. I hope you guys are enjoying the story. 😉 It’s the base for a whole sequence of novels I have planned in that world. Looking forward to introducing you to all those characters! 😉

This Week

Very little. I need to be realistic here: the very fact that this post is late tells me that life and family are going to worm their way into my usual work time. As well they should. If I can’t slow down for the festive season then when can I? But there are a couple of things I want to make sure are done regardless.

  1. Finish reading the last fantasy book of my 2014 Book Challenge and write the review
  2. Finish rewriting portions of my (first) Fab Fables story
  3. Outline my plans for the new year in readiness to publish
  4. Enjoy Christmas

That last one is a given, almost. Looking at all the preparations and festive cheer around here, I’d say I’m doing very well. Oh… and while I have made my own decorations this year, it’s not quite these bad boys.

Completed stars!

Remember these? 😉

Oh well. Maybe next year, eh? :p
