RS: Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust – Cover Reveal (Take Two!)

So . . . last week I whined about people judging books by what they see on the front cover. Well, I think I need to stop doing that because I’m yet to commission a cover that I didn’t instantly fall in love with. My covers are great! :p

And this no exception! While I adored (and still do) my previous cover, my finances don’t (currently) allow me to use that particular designer, lovely as she is. In light of that, in preparation for the re-release of my first novella, here is the stunning cover designed by ravenink, fabulous creative talent behind the artwork on Meeting Each Other: The Full Story.

*drum roll*

Cover art for Slippers & Chains: Sugar Dust

Fooookin WOW! ^_^

*happy sigh*

I’m so glad I waited. So glad I didn’t rush. So glad I trusted my gut on this and was willing to change up my plans. Not that my original ideas were terrible, but instead of clinging to something I couldn’t make work, those ideas gave me a springboard for the brief that yielded this. Isn’t it stunning?! ^_^

I’m also pleased to say that given that the cover is now ready, the release date for the digital version of this novella is 30 June 2015. This is just to ensure I have time to do the last few ‘panic-checks’ I allow myself before a piece is ready for the public. Meanwhile, you can pre-order it and ensure you don’t miss out!

Next week, since that will be my first post of July, I’ll talk about the paperback release! ^_^

IY: Mah Plans 22/06

Well, this is a better week than last, that’s for sure. My head is buzzing, but it’s all good stuff. I think . . .

Actions Last Week

~Get to chapter 17 of my deep edits on ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ following the primary timeline
Yes! I’m free of the funk and it feels so gooood! Rather than go on about it, just take a look at this:

Oh, did I not say I was doing a video diary? 😉 Silly me! Guess you’ll just have to go back and have a watch of the others if you’re curious. ^_^

~Make five review requests (in person/via email/via blogs/via strangers – you need to do this, girlie.
Three. Better than last week, but not enough. I have MEGA catching up to do if I want to meet the month’s goal.

Activities For This Week

Rightyo. That’s good. ^_^ Good, I can stop self-flagellating with that terrible whip of rushes and cactus shoots.

  • Get to chapter 20 of my deep edits on ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ following the primary timeline
  • Make seven review requests (in person/via email/via blogs/via strangers) – go on, girlie . . . one week of meeting this goal. Go.
  • Create and complete the new blog page
  • Confer further with Dave re ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ cover art options

Thoughts…

I really want to complete the primary timeline this week. I want it so badly that I’m forcing myself to accept, right now, that I won’t be able to. There’s just too much on. DSB owes you a post but I can hint at all the things going on with her right now: writing time for both Raven and I is going to slow right down as she focuses on health.

With that in mind, I just need to chill and accept that things are going to be slower.

Easier said than done, but it must be done.

IY: Fantasy Creatures – Zombies; A Handy Metaphor?

You must have heard this before, right? That zombies are so popular because they represent society’s decline/problems/foibles/general crappiness.

I hadn’t thought about this a great deal – with zombies anyway – but I suppose there is some truth in it somewhere. Vampires are symbolic of all things sexy, the desire to cling to youth and the violence often hidden below the surface. They represent our fear of dead things and how little we understand what goes on after death. Vampires are easy! But zombies . . . ?

brain2colorsWell, what are they? Slow moving, dull-witted, crowd following, brain guzzling monsters. Hmm. I was with the metaphor all the way up to the ‘brain guzzling’ part. But there is something that idea, isn’t there?

We, as humans are driven by our desires. The only difference between us and zombies is that we know when to stop. Zombies after all, are following an instinct just like us, the instinct to feed. The only difference is that they aren’t hindered by niggling problems like compassion, morals, law, pain or sympathy. No, these things are single-minded machines geared towards one thing (kinda like shoppers in Ikea at the start of the post-Christmas sales).

And what about the rest?

Zombies might run in packs (sometimes) but they can’t really talk to each other or hold meaningful conversation (unless grunts and groans count). That level of isolation and solitude can be seen, in some cases, just by holding up a mirror. Every human, no matter how rich/popular/famous they might be has faced loneliness at some point. And it can drive you crazy (or you can be lonely because you were crazy and everyone ran away! Either way, not good).

I could go on and on about this; I researched a whole bunch of different ideas and interpretations of zombies to fuel this post and now I have this urge to cram everything in (a bit like when I was slamming through all that research for ‘Silk Over Razor Blades‘. I now know things about Ancient Egypt and the Battle of Waterloo that I never even dreamed of!). Luckily for you, I know that research is for me not for you. I also acknowledge that to dump my brains on the post in such a way would be very much out of character for me and the style of these posts.

I only wanted to touch on this idea because I’m aware that it has been done to death, but it hasn’t yet been done with an Illy Touch (TM).

So I won’t slap you with a research dump. Instead, if you’re curious about my source material you can look at the same the internet sources I did and then follow through to their sources . . . like I did. Y’know . . . if you’re so inclined.

Next week, all being well I’ll be showing you the results of this month’s musings by posting a small piece of flash fiction on zombies. I have no idea what it will be about yet (other than zombies) but it shouldn’t be more than 500 words.

RS: I Haz Planz 18/06

So . . . how am I getting on? Any better than Ileandra’s weepy-whiny got-shit-all-done post earlier this week? Let’s see . . .

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Finish photoshoot with Sarai to get the shots I need for cover art for ‘Sugar Dust’
No. I kinda held fire on this one until knowing exactly what I want. After this morning’s revelation, it’s clear I’m still not sure what to do about getting this cover the way I want it.

~Complete half the paperback formatting for ‘Sugar Dust’
Kinda. I mean I have all the text in the template now. I just need to decide exactly how I want it to look and put all the italics back in since they were lost in the crossover. Additionally, I’ll need to increase the quality of all my images ready for printing and test drive the text size. Oooh, so much to do! 😉

~Send this month’s newsletter
Sorted! And now we’re onto quarterly updates. I’ve given away the last of my freebies too, so now I just need to make sure I have something fun to give away in September when the next update is due. This is going to be a great weight off, let me tell you!

~Chase beta comments for ‘Second Base’
Done! I have two of the four back and while there’s no rush for it (since I’m still fiddling with Sugar Dust), but I don’t want people to forget about Second Base.

~Send x2 review reqeusts for MEO:TFS
Nope. I blame the internet being on and off for the last fortnight, but I was in a coffee shop yesterday morning. I could have done it then. *slaps wrist* Try harder!

Activities For This Week

  1. Make the final decision on the type of cover I want for ‘Sugar Dust’
  2. Complete the nitty gritty of the paperback formatting for ‘Sugar Dust’
  3. Send x2 review reqeusts for MEO:TFS

Thoughts…

So what I thought was a crappy week really wasn’t all that bad. Now all I need to do is keep pushing forward, slowly, steadily, gently to reach the goals I have by the end of the month. I think I have one full week left before needing to run along.

The internet connection is back on in the house too. It was rubbish all of last week (and big chunks of the week before, which put me behind) but it seems like I’ve just slid out of a major funk. I feel like working again, a feeling I’ve no intention of squandering.

Time to keep rolling that stone up that hill!

RS: (Please Don’t) Judge My Books By Their Covers?

There’s a wonderful (misguidedly), optimistic phrase that goes like this; ‘Never judge a book by its cover. You know that one right? I think everyone does. It is applied to people as well as books and seems to be the accepted catch-all for telling people that appearances aren’t always an indication of what lies beneath.

But is that true?

Yes . . . in short, I believe this is true, and will give people, places and situations with an unusual feel the benefit of the doubt. I try my hardest to know something(one) at least a little before I judge (I don’t always manage, but I damn well try!).

With books, however, no matter what the old adage is, the fact remains that this is exactly what people do. They make a snap decision about whether a book suits them by what they see on the front cover. If you’re lucky, they may take a look at the blurb, but very often, nope.

I’m working hard on making the covers for my ‘Slippers & Chains’ series exciting, fresh and new. I need them to show people exactly what to expect when they open the book so they aren’t disappointed when they start reading. But I also need to coax people in. My original cover (the one I’m not longer allowed to use since Breathless Press’ closure) was beautiful. It’s nothing like what I had in mind when I began this process, but it ticked all the boxes one might expect from a work of erotic fiction. Live models, sensual colours (reds, purples and deep blues), near nudity, moody lighting, ‘sexy’ text. There were even chains on it to suit the title. I loved that cover.

But now, since I full have full control over all things ‘Slippers & Chains’ (and everything else) I want to make sure that the cover meets my original dream. That being a sexy cover that matches the mundane, every day aspects of a romantic relationships with those of a BDSM one. Since that’s what the series is about.

But matching that vision with the reality is pretty damn hard. In fact, I’m not sure that I can successfully. How to get the homely, comfortable feel of an established, loving relationship to match up with the kink aspect of a D/s couple? Something’s gotta give and I’m not sure what it is. Though I’m pissed at the idea of having to compromise (it’s not something I’m very good at).

These are the sketches I put together for the ideas across the series. Forgive my crappy drawing, but I want you to see where I was going with my ideas. Without colours and depth and shiny bits, it will be tricky to see exactly what I imagine when I think of them, but try to picture the same dark colours and shadows associated with erotic book covers. What do you think?

This boils down to the need to make some tough decisions. I’m not sure which way I’ll swing this yet, but you’ll see in my goals later today, I’ve got to pin this down if I want to get the ebook out by the end of the month.

*sigh* No rest for the wicked indie author.
