IY: Mah Plans 14/09/15

Right. Now I’m ‘back on form’ let’s see how things look.

Actions Last Week

~Continue using notes from PWG to improve ‘Dead And Alive Episode Two’
Yep. I’m ready to read it again now. Bring on Saturday! I’ve spent a good week playing with it, tweaking, strengthening and increasing tension. I’m feeling quite of myself. Haha, let’s see if I still feel that way on Saturday. 😉

checking off feedback~Chase missing beta comments
Hmm. One of the way, one maybe and one unresponsive. I’m not too surprised—people have things to do—but I’m a little disappointed. Come Monday I’m going to just get on with it. I can’t keep waiting for those lagging (it’s been an additional fortnight now), especially when progress on the cover is moving on nicely.

~Read through received beta comments and make notes
Started earlier. Will finish up later tonight. So far so good.

Activities For This Week

  • Read the next section of ‘Dead And Alive Episode Two’ at PWG
  • Start Deep edits on ‘Dead And Alive: Episode Three’
  • Work through x5 chapters of beta comments

Thoughts…

This will be my first full week of afternoons to work in now that TheSprogs are fully at their new nursery. Today was awesome because the other half actually took the boys away in the morning giving me an additional three hours to work. If I can get one more day like that I’ll be golden. 😉

We’ll see. For now, it’s time to put my head back into the beta comments.

Laterz!

IY: Fantasy Creatures – Dragons – My Top Five Dragon Movies

Don’t be fooled guys. There are LOTS of films with the word ‘dragon’ in the title (many of them staring Bruce Lee or featuring Son Goku :-p) but films that actually have dragons in them? Well . . . let’s have a look. Oh, and because I’m a fraidy cat, these are my top five, but in no particular order. Soz.

How To Train Your Dragon (And The Second One)

Hiccup is just adorable. And a good kid. And a strong character. Couple him with the playful menace that is Toothless (and what a name!) and you have an amazing film to be watched over and over. Pretty soon, I’ll even find the books and have a read of those too.

Dragonheart

First of all: Sean Connery. What more do I need to say? In fact, this is the only film (I’m willing to bet) in which you’ll ever hear Sean Connery cry ‘ooops!’ which is a real treat on the ears. Draco, teams up with Bowen to score a bit of cash by ‘attacking’ and ‘saving’ villages, all the while searching for more dragons while the tyrannical king of the land causes mayhem. An old film, but a great one.

The Never Ending Story

This film has a special place in my heart. I wish I could remember it a little better, but I don’t. I guess that’s an excuse to find it and watch it again! But images of Falcor, the Luck Dragon stay strong and pure in my mind.

Mulan

Yeeeeah. A Disney film had to sneak in here somewhere, right? But the fact that Disney Studios managed to cast Eddie Murphy as a smart–arse mini dragon, in a film about the very real female Chinese soldier, just makes me love it.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Smaug is THE dragon as far as I’m concerned. Has been for years. The fact that Peter Jackson wrangled Benedict Cumberbatch to voice him only made me toes curl in glee.

There are loads more, of course. Reign of Fire, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Eragon (which I should watch properly now my rage has ebbed), Shrek, Dungeons and Dragons (d’uh!) but they just don’t quite rank up there.

What’s your favourite dragon movie? Would you recommend one to me so I can expand my viewing library?

RS: eBook Review – My Secretary, Her Fantasy, Eve Langlais

Author: Eve Langlais
Title: My Secretary, Her Fantasy
Genre: BDSM Erotica
ASIN: B00RKS8RCI
Length: 56 ‘pages’

She’s claimed his heart. She’s claimed his soul. Now she intends to fully claim his body.

Isabelle has a fantasy, a very naughty desire that her boss is balking at. She wants to claim him in a way he’s never imagined.

Grant would do anything for his secretary, or so he thinks until she tells him her secret fantasy. His desire to please is strong, but giving her what she wants means redefining his engrained notions on bedroom games—and giving up all sense of control.

Can Isabelle convince him to trust her and will Grant allow his mistress to claim her submissive?

line break, swirling graphics, from openclipart

Cover:

In the same vein as the first of this series (duology?) I feel like I should be complaining but I’m not. It’s very simple, stylish and, in all, did what covers are supposed to do: it pulled me in for a closer look.

Story:

Now that Isabelle has Grant all to herself, she sets about moving on to the next stage of her family. Coaxing Grant to join her in a threesome with her Master.

Characters:

Isabelle: The Secretary. As before, the story is from her POV in the most part, but this time we get a sense of her history and how she came to be as she is. And in that sense, I mean a submissive on the one hand and a dominant on the other. It’s interesting to see her progression from what she once was, to what she is when we catch up with her in the first book, but I have very, many problems with it. Problems I’ll cover further down.
Grant: The Boss. I . . . can’t decide. Much like before there is a level of insight into this character that I enjoy, but something about his interactions with Isabelle this time felt really forced. As though he wanted to be there, but didn’t and fell more on the ‘not’ side of matters.

Eroticism:

Perhaps I’ve left this one too long before reviewing it, but the book isn’t quite so hot as the first one. Perhaps because significant sexual scenes stem from a reluctance from some (or all) of the characters involved. As far as fantasies go, I do acknowledge that there are rape/reluctance fantasies out there and there is a huge market for it. However reading it in mainstream erotic literature just makes me comfortable. In my eyes, it’s the sort of thing one expects to find on Literotica and rarely beyond sites like that.

Still, the scenes I did enjoy, I enjoyed a great deal and can’t say that the good scenes in which everyone was fully on board weren’t as hawt as a damn hawt thing.

Overall experience:

Again, I enjoyed reading this book. I loved getting to know Isabelle and Grant a bit more and learning about Isabelle’s Dom which is dropped in as a surprise twist at the end of the first book.

However . . .

I’ve talked about about coerced consent, romantic rape and consent in general. In BDSM I believe the subject is particularly relevant and should be treated carefully.

Too many scenes in this book featured characters that started out saying ‘No.’ It doesn’t matter—to me, anyway—that they eventually changed their minds, or came to love what they were doing. They said no. This, to my mind, means that the scene, whatever it was, should have stopped, and that a gentle, mature conversation should have taken place to ensure that all parties were happy.

Pushing boundaries and testing the limits of a submissive is one thing, as is playing with humiliation, discomfort and voyeuristic tendencies. But if a woman (or man!) tells you to back off because they aren’t interested in having sex with you, then any actions that follow, designed to change that answer, are coercive and nudging close to rape.

If, following a discussion, attitudes have changed or the unwilling party later expresses a desire to try again, without coercion from another party, then that is different and isn’t a problem.

But this book . . . I don’t know . . . slightly too much of it was about learning how you really like things to be, or getting pushed towards wonderful sexual experiences. I don’t for a instant deny that things can happen this way, but we should all be careful in writing scenes like this because we don’t want to tell people that this is how things are.

Hmm. /rant.

Final score:

Average across all scores is 4, which rounds out to clean 4 fireballs.

I guess, at the end of the day, I still enjoyed reading this book, despite my niggles with consent and coercion. I’m just a little surprised to see the story move in this direction given the fairly strong beginnings set by the first book. Ho hum.

If there is another book in this series I will read it, if only to see how the characters progress. But I am a tiny bit disappointed following the explosive and super enjoyable first book.

RS: I Haz Planz 10/09/15

I feel like I haven’t done much.

Now . . . I know when I start a post like that, I’m using bemoaning inactivity and lapses in productivity, but that’s not the case. I haven’t done much, but Ileandra has. And DSB has been to the gym three times since I last posted here. If that’s not something then I really don’t know what is.

Actions Last Week

~Write 3,000 words of ‘Slippers & Chains: Three’ (that’s 500 words a day)
Nope. *shrugs* Didn’t even cross my mind.

 Activities For This Week

  1. Write 3,000 words of ‘Slippers & Chains: Three’ (that’s 500 words a day) Let’s try that again! 😉
  2. Check in with Ravenink and choose alternate designer if she’s not around

Thoughts . . .

checking off feedbackI’m quite enjoying this non-freaking-out-over-missing-a-goal thing I have going on right now. In fact, I feel good all over, which is nice.

Usually I have two clear days of work in which most of my stuff gets done, however, this week is the first day of school-nursery for The Sprogs. They go every weekday and they’re there for three hours.

So far, that’s crap for me. By the time DSB takes them, comes back home, has lunch, sits at the laptop, a huge chunk of the time is all ready gone. But I think as we all work it out and get used to how things are going to be, we’ll all benefit from it somewhat. I hope.

Anyway, the fact that not much as been done is as much a product of that, as Ileandra monopolising DSB’s time. But I can handle that. So long as one of us is getting stuff done, right? 😉

RS: So, Let’s Chat #BDSM ^_^

I’m done with tropes. I’m sure there are more and if I find more, I’ll write about them, but it’s time to move on.

I have in mind a new series of posts where I chat about the different aspects of BDSM, relevant because I’m working so hard on ‘Second Base’ (part of the ‘Slippers & Chains‘ series) which centres on a BDSM relationship.

For those who don’t know, BDSM breaks down thuswise:

  • Bondage and discipline (B&D, BD)
  • Dominance and submission( D&S, DS, D/s)
  • Sadism and masochism or sadomasochism (SM, S&M)

Since the explosion that was Fifty Shades (*sigh*) there are plenty of sites giving a run down of ‘what BDSM is’ but I’m going to avoid all of them (though this article is interesting – just try to disregard that it’s from the Daily Mail, okay?).

There are sites I’ve used in the past when researching ‘Slippers & Chains’ and these were active well before anybody had heard of EL James. These are the sites I trust and that I’ll pull my information from. As this series progresses, I’ll link to all my sources so you can have a peep for yourself.

As has been the trend for the past few weeks, I’ll keep my posts short (500 words and below) to allow time for full discussion and chatter. I’ll also update this post with all the titles of subsequent posts as we go, so they can be found in one place.

Yey me, soooo organised! 😉

I may get a couple of guests in to talk about their experiences and/or folk from my friendship circle who are part of the scene and have something they’d like to discuss. The idea is to learn as much as possible because, as much as I think I know on the subject, there is always time and space to learn more. And, of course, if I plan to write more on ‘Slippers & Chains’ then research is a very important part of making my stories and characters as authentic as they can be.

Oh, and if you know anybody who might be interested, or who has something they’d like to share, let me know! I want to hook up with everybody and anybody who has thoughts to share on BDSM and the world around it.

Woo, this is going to be fun! ^_^
