Don’t be fooled guys. There are LOTS of films with the word ‘dragon’ in the title (many of them staring Bruce Lee or featuring Son Goku :-p) but films that actually have dragons in them? Well . . . let’s have a look. Oh, and because I’m a fraidy cat, these are my top five, but in no particular order. Soz.
How To Train Your Dragon (And The Second One)
Hiccup is just adorable. And a good kid. And a strong character. Couple him with the playful menace that is Toothless (and what a name!) and you have an amazing film to be watched over and over. Pretty soon, I’ll even find the books and have a read of those too.
Dragonheart
First of all: Sean Connery. What more do I need to say? In fact, this is the only film (I’m willing to bet) in which you’ll ever hear Sean Connery cry ‘ooops!’ which is a real treat on the ears. Draco, teams up with Bowen to score a bit of cash by ‘attacking’ and ‘saving’ villages, all the while searching for more dragons while the tyrannical king of the land causes mayhem. An old film, but a great one.
The Never Ending Story
This film has a special place in my heart. I wish I could remember it a little better, but I don’t. I guess that’s an excuse to find it and watch it again! But images of Falcor, the Luck Dragon stay strong and pure in my mind.
Mulan
Yeeeeah. A Disney film had to sneak in here somewhere, right? But the fact that Disney Studios managed to cast Eddie Murphy as a smart–arse mini dragon, in a film about the very real female Chinese soldier, just makes me love it.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Smaug is THE dragon as far as I’m concerned. Has been for years. The fact that Peter Jackson wrangled Benedict Cumberbatch to voice him only made me toes curl in glee.
There are loads more, of course. Reign of Fire, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Eragon (which I should watch properly now my rage has ebbed), Shrek, Dungeons and Dragons (d’uh!) but they just don’t quite rank up there.
What’s your favourite dragon movie? Would you recommend one to me so I can expand my viewing library?
