Stickers! Stickers! Stickers!

In a break from our usual Sunday programming, I have another update on The Book Fairy. ^_^

MY STICKERS ARE HERE!

I knew it wouldn’t take as long as they were saying it would, but when they popped through the door on Friday morning I was more than a little stunned. And they’re so beautiful! The best part is that now I have them, I can show you!
book fairy label
This is the label that will be on the front of all books being handed out by the Book Fairy!

The first book to go out, Darren Brown’s Digital Fortress, has its sticker in place and is ready to go. All I need to do now is figure out where I want to put it! Check in later and I’ll let you know where I put it.

So excited! I really hope people enjoy the books I’m giving out. If it goes a little way towards getting more people reading, then I can only be pleased by that. If it introduces new authors, styles, genres to people who do a lot of reading anyway, then even better. If I can offer someone who has finished their newspaper a little bit of entertainment, then that’s good too.

Film Review: Silver Linings Playbook

Dave and I went to the cinema at the weekend! It was lovely. An unexpected treat; a chance for us to go out together and enjoy each other’s company without the kiddies. Just a couple of hours, but it’s wonderful how much of a recharge that has been for me.

We watched Silver Linings Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Nero.

Normally, when I watch a film I want to see blood, explosions, big car chases and all sorts of action. I rarely go see a romcom or chick flick or arty piece. I just don’t. However… this… which probably would be catagorised as a ‘chick flick’ was brilliant! I only wanted to see it because of Bradley Cooper, but I feel justified now. Jennifer Lawrence (you may know her as Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games) was also a pleasure to watch too. I’ve decided that I like her a lot. And Robert De Nero is of course… Robert De Nero. What more do I really need to say?

The film follows a man, recently released from a mental care home having viciously and almost fatally attacked his wife’s lover eight months prior. He returns home intending to improve himself and demonstrate that he is better so that he can pick up where he left off with his wife, convinced that their relationship is one of a kind and special. On the way, he meets another girl with similar difficulties to his own and the pair form an unlikely friendship. Awww, right?

I know nothing about depression as a mental illness. There are people around me who suffer from or who have suffered from in the past and the impression I get from the film is that the subject was handled tastefully, respectfully and genuinely. For that I love the film all the more. I have been told – by people who would know – that the film does indeed handle the issues respectfully and tastefully so my hats off to them. I would assume that the chap that wrote the book the film is based on – Matthew Quick – has done his research. The book was released in 2008, I really feel that I should go find it now.

For a gentle, not at all sickly, often funny film, I would recommend this in a heartbeat. While it lacks the action and guts of most films I watch, it really was enjoyable with an incredibly satisfying (if not unexpected) ended. Do it. 🙂

The Book Fairy Lives!

I’m so excited! It’s been ages since an idea of mine has come together so nicely, but after agonising over the design of the stickers I want to use I have finally nailed it. ^_^ The stickers are ordered and will be winging their way over to me shortly. Well… I say shortly; the delivery notice said ETA 15/12/12. A bit longer than I was expecting, but I suppose there’s no need to rush.

All I need to do now is choose which books are going to get the Book Fairy treatment, first!

I imagine that such a task will be easier than I first imagined now that I’ve transferred the books I intend to keep over to the new shelves and out of the boys’ room. In fact, what that exercise has also done, is reveal several books that I have apparently borrowed and not returned! And books that I have loaned out and not received back. More than that, it has revealed how OCD (CDO!) I can really be.

All of my books are arranged on the shelves in blocks according to author and series. If I couldn’t get a block to fit on the shelves it had to be moved so the books could stay together. Needless to say what should have been a quick and easy organisational exercise took me the better part of a whole afternoon. *sigh* Never mind, it is done!

The first round of Book Fairy offerings should contain in the region of five books. I’ll be sure to let you know when the page goes live and when the first books are out in the world. For now, I’ll leave you with a sneaky peek at one of the images from the sticker (part of me wants to reveal the whole thing now, but the rest of me is enjoying the suspense. Besides, I haven’t even seen them printed yet, so you all have to wait too!).

Six Sentence Sunday 25/11 #42

Oh who am I kidding? My NaNo is not going as well as it has in previous years (I must sound like a stuck record by now) so I have very little to show you on that score. The reality is, that story is so good that I need to give it my full attention when the boys are a little older. Having started on it now, I’ll know for later where I want it to go and the twists and turns I need it to take. My ‘back brain’ will be working on it while I do other things. I don’t feel guilty about that; it is better to write anything at all, than nothing, I haven’t been completely idle this month. Not by a long shot.

I’ve rewritten and editing two pieces of flash that I intend to submit to competitions by the beginning of next month, and I have made a start on what I hope to be submitting to open call for submissions over at Coming Together. There are three open books there and I have stories just ready to BURST out of me. More than that, they are short stories which I think will be best for getting me back into the swing of things. I know myself well enough by now to understand that ‘the deep end,’ leads to drowning. It never used to, but things change and, as you’d expect, I have other sorts of swimming to be doing (the boys are so big now! I’ll have to do another update at some point).

So… babble aside, I’d like to give you a sample from a piece that doesn’t yet have a name. It began as a piece of light and playful BDSM and it will continue in that vein but I’m going to give it a bit of tweaking to make it more suitable for the ‘With Curves‘ anthology coming up. Most satisfyingly, I don’t need to give it much of a tweak at all, the BBW is already there, but I’ll need to make her more of a focus for it to be suitable. I’m looking forward to that a lot!

Meanwhile, I have a six sentence sample for you to enjoy.

Even as his left hand touched the cuffs about her wrists, Master’s right hand dived under the skirt and Raven was suddenly reminded of the fact that she wore no knickers beneath. His hands felt soft and cool, seeking out the moisture between her legs and stirring it gently with one teasing finger.

“Sir….”

“Bring him in.” Master stepped back, pulling his magical hand away and sitting down once more. “Do your thing.”

Yes… I know that her name is Raven. Yes, I know that that is my other name. No, I’m not going to tell you if any of her exploits in this story are drawn from real experiences. My mum reads this blog, you know! :p

Right, that’s enough of that. Use the banner link below to hook up with some of the other writers this month. I’m sure they have plenty of titillating and exciting excerpts for you to enjoy. Caio!

Chapter Length

black notebook and red pencil from OpenClipArtHaving briefly discussed text breaks, I thought it only made sense to look into chapter length. It is also something that has come up in my writing class and I find it interesting how much the opinions differ.

I’ve read very many new and interesting books this year. Many by authors I’ve never encountered before and it has exposed me to several writing styles and voices. That is a good thing. After all, it’s impossible for me to call myself a writer with any sort of expectation of credibility without exposing myself to my contemporaries. To the competition. To my role models.

Chapters, as I mentioned last week don’t always feature in a novel; there may be text breaks. In a novel that is broken into chapters they can vary from long to short. From moody, to comedic. From one POV to another. Similar to a text break, I suppose what matters most is what you want your chapter to achieve.

In my own writing, again, this varies, but I have noticed a a consistency when it comes to chapter length. In novels which do have chapters, I tend to write them at about the 2,000 word mark. Is this a magical number? Sometimes in class and again with the Phoenix Writers, it seems that 2k is a nice round number and that it’s rather popular. My own investigations (mainly through extensive reading) tells me that 2,000 words is just about enough to grab a reader’s interest and to give the author time to build up an interesting scene. It also seemed to be the sweet spot before my attention began to wander. Not off the book, but to other characters; what was that guy doing? Where is the woman with the talking dog? Can we go back to that pirate and his elocution lessons? …that sort of thing.

But what do you want your chapter to do? Is it designed to carry your reader gently from one plot point to the next? Or do you intend to slap your reader with a new twist with all the force of a hurled wet fish? Do you want to seduce them into the intricate layers of your sub plots, or do you want to tickle their funny bone with delicious turns of phrase? What you want to do, dictates chapter length; I’ve no doubt about that.

If, through your chapter, you want to work in a little exposition, transition your characters from one place to another, then a longer chapter may suit your needs. Perhaps even as far as 4,000 words. However, if you want to ratchet up the pace and drag your readers onto the roller coaster of a long awaited action scene, then a shorter chapter may help not only to showcase the change in pace, but make it palpable too. Just as shorter, punchier sentences can add a sense of urgency to a paragraph, short chapters can do the same thing to the whole novel. Compare it to the long, laborious climb to the top of a snowy hill, followed by the hair raising race to the bottom on your sled (or in my case, black bin bag).

The same also applies to manipulating emotions. You may want to take advantage of a mid-length chapter for emotions like fear or sorrow, but for excitement or anger, a short, explosion of a chapter will really pop in the reader’s face. It will also keep them turning the pages.

What do you think? Do you use chapter length to guide the pace and tone of your novel, or, like me, do you tend to stick to a regular formula of so-many-words-per-chapter?
