A Hot Debate

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about the boys and though this post references them, it’s not about them. This post is actually about me asking you, the readers, a question. And it isn’t the sort of thing we usually talk about on this blog, so feel free to stop reading if the question or the thought of what might follow, bothers you. Anyway, the question is this:

Where do you stand on breastfeeding?

Since having the twins, I have been reading blogs, articles, magazines, Facebook posts and leaflets about breastfeeding. It has been important to me because I chose, right from the start to breastfeed Michael and Leon. There was no debate in my mind and through all the research I did while pregnant, I just became more and more sure of that fact.

Since then, after the first eight-ish weeks of absolute hell (mastitis, thrush, sore nipples, no sleep and damp bedsheets), breastfeeding has just fallen into place. The boys know what they’re doing, I know what I’m doing and it is as pleasant an activity as any other that I get to share with them every single day. The bond I share with my children as I feed them, nourish them with my own body, is unparalleled by anything else I have ever come across.

A couple of weeks ago, I watched a documentary on attachment parenting. The show did a very good job of almost ridiculing these dedicated mothers, particularly those who breastfed their children beyond the age of about 18 months. I have also, through some of the Facebook groups I am a member of, been exposed to newspaper articles with titles like ‘Breasts are For Sex, Not For Children.’ I have seen debate after heated debate about the merits of breast milk over formula, bed sharing versus not and just want to get an idea of what people think.

I realise this is a massive step away from what this blog usually covers, and I’m sorry about that. As I said previously, if this post is not to your taste, please check back on Sunday at which point I hope to resume our usual programming.

Seven months into living with my boys I find that I don’t have strong opinions either way. Well, I have strong ideas about what I want to do, but not about other people. I plan to breastfeed until I feel like stopping (or until their new little teeth start biting where I’d rather not be bitten) and nobody is going to stop me doing that. I admire the mothers who breastfeed beyond one year, but, frankly put, I want my body back before my boys reach four years old. I don’t have any problem with seeing a woman breastfeed in a public place and I myself have had to do so on several occasions. In fact, I do almost every single day. I don’t use a cover – I tried to in the early weeks and it was so much faff just I just gave up on it – and I don’t feel offended if a curious child pops away from his mother’s breast and temporarily exposes a nipple. I don’t find it strange that we as adults will drink the milk from other mammals (cows and goats) but not our own. The fact is interesting to me, but since I have always put cow’s milk on my cereal, it makes no odds to me. I don’t particularly feel offended/upset/disappointed by seeing another mother feed their child from a bottle.

All these things (and more) cause such heated debates, furious tantrums and fallings out that, for my own curious mind, I thought I’d bring the debates to you.

So… what do you think? Do you have strong opinions/ideas/thoughts either way? Has anything I’ve mentioned above brought out a strong reaction in you? Is it a lot of fuss and bother over nothing? Do you have any experiences you would feel comfortable sharing? I’d love to hear from you.

Lemon Drizzle Cake – Cafe Nero

While Cafe Nero is my coffee shop of choice – thanks Dave! – I didn’t know they sold lemon drizzle cake. This particular branch of Nero seems to have brought the cake in along with the other cakes of the Christmas season, like mince pies and certain amaretto biscuits. Still… I was more than happy to forgo my usual Greek honey yoghurt to try a slice of the cake for the purposes of my review. ^_^

I’m going to use the same format for each of these reviews and give the cake a star rating out of five for certain aspects; presentation, taste, texture and cost. I’ll then average them out in an overall star rating for the whole cake experience.
five stars

Presentation
three starsThis cake, unlike some others I enjoy, is a slice from a loaf of cake, rather than the traditional round shape. It’s iced across the top and a uniform colour straight the way through. Very pleasing on the eye, though Nero, as a coffee shop, doesn’t make any extra effort with presentation the way some other places do. Still, for a cake, it’s nice enough.

Taste
three starsNot as lemony as I was hoping. The icing is good and strong, though the sponge of the cake itself is the tiniest bit bland. You can tell that it has been mass produced for want of a better phrase.

Texture
four starsI’m quite odd – I guess – in that I like quite dry cakes. I don’t want them too moist or sticky, probably because, in truth, I would prefer a biscuit. So this cake is pretty good on that score. The icing has a good, solid crunch to it (I don’t know if that’s the way it’s stored, or if that is the type of icing; either way it’s good for me) and the sponge itself is good and crumbly. The type you have to press your fork into to catch the crumbs. *nom nom nom*

Cost
two starsIt may seem a bit of a cop out to give this cake such a middling rating for cost, but that’s certainly not the case. Nero is more expensive than some places, but the price of this cake is consistent with the rest of the products. I would like a little bit more for my pound – the slices aren’t quite as thick as I feel they should be – but you don’t just pay for the cake, you pay for the whole experience. However, this review is just about the cake, so, unfortunately, it’s just two stars.

Overall Rating
three stars
Not as nice as some, though certainly better than others, this cake goes away with a very respectable three star rating.

Hope you enjoyed this playful little review, I’ll be back with the next cake in the not too distant future! ^_^

Book Fairy Offerings

Yes… in another break from our usual Sunday schedule, I thought I’d come back to you with more Book Fairy news! The first two books have gone out into the wild; one in Cafe Nero earlier on in the week and another in a burlesque club of all places.

Digital Fortress with Book Fairy Sticker in placeDigital Fortress by Dan Brown and The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini are free and hopefully being read. ^_^

I must admit, I’m finding this a little harder than I thought I would. 1) I actually find it really hard to leave a book on a seat or a table… my instinct is to pick it up and guard it with my life. But that’s because I love books. 2) I just keep forgetting to leave the book behind! I have been into several coffee shops this week and a couple of restaurants and it wasn’t until Friday night that I even remembered The Kite Runner. The Kite Runner book with Book Fairy Sticker in placeI made a point of taking it out of my bag early and putting on the seat in the club, so that when I got up I could just leave it behind. Of course someone spots me leaving the seat with the book there, so I ended up just handing it to the chap and calling it a freebie.

Hopefully the next few books will be easier. I’m going to do them at a rate of two a week and try to be creative about where I put them. The next one, probably something by James Patterson, will be left either in a phone booth, or at a bus stop. I also want to get a couple onto trains (as that’s somewhere that people are always wanting something to read) so I need to go somewhere. If I had thought about it, I would have given one to Dave, as he did some travelling this week, but never mind.

At least I have a plan for the week now. I find that such a thing is important; at least that way, if I know the small things I want to do, I can take small steps towards getting them done. And I won’t get all mixed up and confused and forgetful. Hopefully.

What about you guys? What are you plans for the week ahead? Do you find that writing things down, or having a couple of ideas before hand helps you achieve your goals? What might you suggest for a scatter brained mum of twins like me?

Eating Up Time

It would be wrong to say I have too much time on my hands. I most certainly don’t. Or rather, I don’t have time on my hands that I’m able to use in a ‘productive’ fashion. I’m no longer at work; so my days are spent teaching, entertaining and loving my boys. That is as much a job as anything I used to do in the office. I don’t get paid for it either, though love, smiles and giggles are a far more valuable currency. 😉

Anyway, the point is, I have lots of things to occupy my time, which is the reason that posts here have been a rather varied jumble recently. I’m telling you this because things are likely to stay jumbled and random for a few more weeks yet, especially with my latest idea. Well… Dave’s idea, really.

Clipart lemon from OpenClipArt, I spend a lot of time in coffee shops. I enjoy the ambience while supping lovely warm drinks and scoffing cakes. Sometimes I write letters, other times I read a book. Most of the time I hold onto one of my darling boys because he’s bored in the pram. I do all of this either in Dave’s company, or in the company of one of my friends. My favourite drink is currently a caramelatte (NOM!) and my favourite cake is the lemon drizzle cake that can be found in very, many different places. Apparently its rather popular.

Since I spend so much time in these places and insist upon having a slice of cake almost every time Dave thought it would be a funny thing to do a review on all the different locations and the quality of their cakes. Heh. I’m not much of a food critic, but I LOVE food and I certainly don’t have a problem talking about it. I have even less of a problem sampling different cakes all over the city!

So… this is my new feature, for a short while anyway. ^_^

My most regular coffee haunt is Cafe Nero, but I also frequent Starbucks and several other small places that seem unique to Leicester. I’m going to make a point of visiting each one (and any other place that offers a lemon drizzle cake) and writing up a review.

I know it’s silly, but I like the idea of silly right now. Something light-hearted and gentle for the Christmas season.

I R Scrooge

clip art christmas tree from OpenClipArtI’m fairly certain I did a post like this last year, but I just need to get it off my chest. -_-

Today is December 4 and yet Facebook is dotted with pictures of Christmas trees that my friends and family already have in their homes and the shops have been playing assorted Christmas carols for at least a fortnight. On Saturday I saw the Salvation Army brass band and the pretty coloured lights are already on all over the city and running up the council’s electricity bill.

Mental.

Anyway, what I actually want to say is, why do people keep asking me what the boys want for Christmas?! First of all… they’re not even a year old, I doubt they want anything. Second, they don’t HAVE to have anything. This post is designed to sniff and poke at the commercialism of Christmas these days and it’s all the more obvious to me how much I hate it, because I keep getting the same questions and comments.

Oh it’s their first Christmas, you have to get them something!

What shall I get them?

How are you celebrating their first Christmas?

You must be really excited; its their first Christmas!

Well I tell you what, people… I’ll be celebrating their first Christmas the same why I plan to celebrate every other after; with love and family time. Those are the only habits/traditions/expectations I want to instil in my boys. Presents, stockings, bad food, though nice are not what Christmas is and should be about and I want to make sure they know that. I want them to know that the important things are love and sharing and togetherness. I don’t want to raise the type of children who have a freak out on Christmas morning because they didn’t unwrap the toy they wanted, even though they have twelve other amazing gifts. I don’t want to raise the sort of children who go to school, tot up ‘totals’ of how many presents their friends got and then come home to complain about it. I realise a some of that will be difficult because kids suffer terribly from peer pressure and the need to fit in and be like everyone else, but I hope I can raise individual boys strong enough to rise above that to some level. I want them to understand what things are worth and how much time, effort and money goes into something, so they can properly appreciate it.

I don’t have anything against Christmas in of itself. I remain amused that the Christian festival of Christmas takes root in the Pagan festival of Yule and conveniently forgets ignores that the majority of its traditions (tree, tinsel, wreathes) come from the practises of pagans that pre date Christianity by a loooooooooooooooong way. Separate debate. Doesn’t matter right now. I just don’t like the commercialism. That’s all. So if my freaking out over the presents question, makes me a scrooge, I guess I’ll just have to hold my head up high and accept the title.

What do you guys think? How is Christmas celebrated in your home? What are the traditions most important to you on December 25th? Do you think I should maybe make more fuss over the ‘first Christmas?’ After all… they won’t have another ‘first,’ right?
