Lemon Drizzle Cake – Starbucks

Nom! New review and a surprise lemon drizzle cake (well, they call it the Lemon Loaf) from Starbucks! I didn’t realise they did them, but last Friday when I skipped off to Brum to see an old and dear friend of mine, I spotted it when we stopped for a drink. Never one to turn down the opportunity for cake (hehee) I thought I’d better grab it. Thanks, Celine, for snapping this picture before I scoffed it:
Starbucks Lemon Drizzle

So, as we all (should) know, Starbucks is a massive chain, popular both here and in the USA and known recently for skipping out on their taxes in this country. My opinion on that is neither here nor there (in fact, I don’t have one) but this cake certainly make me sit up.

Presentation
two starsNothing fancy here. Just a slab of cake, slapped on a plate. Still, it had a good colour and a nice layer of icing along the top that was not too thick and therefore didn’t distract from the cake itself. Though similar to Nero’s this cake is a slice from a loaf style slab, so there’s only so pretty it can look. Ho hum.

Taste
three starsMass produced nummy-ness. The ice had rind in it, an unusual touch that so far, I’ve not come across. Very pleasant as a result, however and added a little squidgyness to the icing. Powerful lemon flavour as well, though that died right out by the time you got to the sponge. It tasted a bit bland to be honest, not much to it at all and the only reason I knew it was lemon was because of the icing.

Texture
four starsThis surprised me. Considering how boring the taste of the sponge was, the cake itself was really pleasant in the mouth. Far more moist than I might have guessed (or originally wanted), but after a couple of bites I was quite into it. Couple that with the rind in the icing and it makes a range of textures and that I actually really enjoyed.

Cost
three starsOoops. I wish I had made a proper note of the price to give you the exact figure, unfortunately I didn’t. However, that day I had the cake, a bottled drink AND an iced drink and I only paid £5 so it can’t be that bad. I did get a little bit of a discount because I picked up on of their loyalty cards, but those iced drinks are a good £3ish. So the cake couldn’t have been more than £2ish. Which, is about right for a chain store. I just wish the slice had been a little thicker for that sort of price.

Overall Rating
three stars
Yep, about on par with the Cafe Nero specimen and nowhere near as gorge as the Crumbling Cookie. A middling three stars for a middling lemon cake.

Following The Leader

Following The Leader from OpenClipArt I watched a documentary on Sunday (thanks for spotting it Dave!) called How To Write A Mills And Boon. I was interested because it’s something that my mother has always insisted I try. The very fact that she says it suggests to me that she either doesn’t know what I write, or has never read an M&B book before. Regardless, it was an idea that always made me laugh, shake my head and change the subject.

Watching the documentary, in which Stella Duffy takes up the task of writing the first three chapters and synopsis (query style) of one of these novels only served to reinforce the idea.

It seems that M&B books work to a very specific formula and that any deviation from that will lead to rejection. There is very little space for characters other than the ‘rich, alpha male hero’ and the ‘wholesome, likeable heroine’ who meet, fall for each other and live happily ever after. Yikes! The last time I wrote ‘romance’ my main character was devastated because his lover had been chosen by the Queen to ‘seed’ her (yes, it was a homoerotic piece, that falls more under erotica than romance, but still). His lover was then going to be ritualistically murdered to ensure conception. Certainly not HEA. Even in early drafts of Silk Over Razor Blades, Ileandra can’t hold down any of the men she ends up with; one tries to kill her, she kills another and the last is shit scared of her. In my stupidly epic (I mean in length) fantasy piece Gaea (yes, I’m still working on the title), T’keyah declares her love for Kane one night and the next he is turned into a wolf by a vindictive wizard. Before she can even sleep with him! So… happily ever after? Not my style.

Some of the comments from the workshop in Tuscany (back to the documentary now, though I would certainly LOVE to go to Tuscany) made me cringe. What do you mean less prose and more dialogue?! Readers aren’t babies; they don’t need to be spoon fed every detail and emotion. To paraphrase my writer’s group, they need to have something to do. Giving them every detail with simple writing is boring as well as insulting. At least to me. When I read a book, I want to feel the story and do a bit of figuring out for myself; I don’t want the author to simply tell me how awful/wonderful/sad/scary everything is. Particularly when I can figure it out myself from the setting/atmosphere/simile/imagery. *sigh*

Anyway, this post isn’t designed to bash M&B. They have their place, people love them, so they must be doing something right. No, this post is about writing to trends. M&B accept unsolicited works which you would image would be wonderful for poor lil me. But that is not the genre I write in. So should I chuck in my dreams of seeing SORB (and several other novels) on bookshelves and concentrate on writing what sells? Should I bite my lip and write drivel along the lines of FSoG because that bandwagon is rumbling along at high speed with no obvious signs of stopping?

No. Of course I shouldn’t! Not only would that make me an unforgivable sell out, but I’d be soooooooooo unhappy! I want to write what I want to write and though it would be lovely if other people wanted to read it (obviously!) I can’t pander to that. Otherwise I won’t be writing as well as I can be, nor will I enjoy the process. And, since I’m not going to make millions of pounds with any of my books, I damn well better enjoy the process of writing them. Otherwise what the hell am I doing it for?!

So… there will be no following the leader for me. No chasing after current trends or fads, or even putting aside something I want to work on because someone, somewhere has an open anthology. Obviously if I have a story that suits, or if I’m working on something that matches the criteria, that is another matter, but my time for writing is so constricted right now; I have to give the time over to writing what I want. Even if it has nowhere to go.

I read a little bit of Walking The Razor’s Edge last night. A small portion of it was floating about on my laptop desktop and returning to those characters was like stepping into a room full of family. I miss them. Ileandra, Shawn, Tristen, Saar… they’re all characters that I’ve worked so hard to round off and make whole that it seems a shame to just leave their story unfinished. After all, Silk Over Razor Blades is just the story; this is a trilogy and I’m never going to finish it if I don’t spend some time on it.

What about you guys? Have you ever found yourself inadvertently following trends? Or have you done so in the past and regretted it? Or has it worked out positively for you? I’d love to hear from you. As always! 🙂

Six Sentence Sunday 06/01 #46

The first Six Sunday of the year! It’s been a fun few months putting up these little snippets and I’m tempted to keep it up, but we’ll just see how things pan out. Now that it’s January, I’ve run out of excuses to not get my freelancing self off the ground. Particularly important since I now know my official last day at work (more on that in later posts). Anyway, I digress. Continuing with the Breaking Him In story, we’ll skip ahead a fraction to a further on into the night.

Raven allows her pet into the house, she names him Fox and fantasises about how he will look in the butt plug tail she has for him to wear. However, before she can reach that far, it seems that Master has another idea.

Back in the living room Master stood waiting, watching with his arms folded over his chest. He held a broad handled flogger and trailed the tails over his outstretched palm.

Raven paused, her confident step faltering as she found herself utterly wrong footed by this new development. “Sir?”

He smiled, gesturing to the sofa where a spreader bar lay in wait. “I’m going to use that before you start.”

Uh oh! Seems she’s not going to have her way after all. Not yet at least, anyway.

Next week will give you another snippet of this steamy tale. I hope you enjoy it. For now however, there are plenty of other people taking part and, as ever, you can use the banner link below to find them.

Bonus Blog: 2012’s Goals And Looking Forward

busy mum from OpenClipArt2012 was such a BUSY year! Even if I put aside being pregnant and eventually having my beautiful twins, there was a lot going on. Redundancies at work, various writing projects, holidays and skipping here, there and everywhere to see various family members. Through it all, however, there were goals that I talked about this time last year that it is now time to review.

My book reading goal and my word count goal. Both of these were stupidly challenging, especially since when I made the decision I was already four months pregnant and knew full well that I’d be pressed for time. What can I say; I like to punish myself. 😉

I guess the first thing I should mention is that it wasn’t a punishment at all. I’m so thoroughly proud of my word count for last year that I could almost cry. All things considered, the fact that I got any writing done at all absolutely boggles the mind. The fact that this blog hasn’t missed a single post (just one blip where a post went up a day early) is also far more than I ever expected.

The book goal is even better. Early on in the year I powered through books on my Kindle, then in hospital I tackled a load more. I picked up tonnes of free books (as I do) at Alt Fiction and have read quite a few of those too. 46 new authors and 72 tales gobbled. The exercise has exposed me to some amazing talent (and some not so much) but it has made me want, more than ever, to join the ranks of ‘the published.’ That is not my goal this year however.
This year, looking at the past seven months, I can tell that I’m going to have very little time for writing. I’ll still do as much as I can, but I’m not going to beat myself up. Seeing my boys grow is such an incredible gift and I’ll only get to do it once. The writing will pick up again when they’re a little older. My goal for this year is very simple and one that I’m already enjoying fulfilling and it is simply this:

REMEMBER THE GOOD THINGS.

Empty glass jar from OpenClipArtSo many wonderful things happened to me in 2012, but in the rush of living I’ve forgotten lots of the. I find that a shame, because it pays to step back sometimes and remember just how much one has to be thankful for. To ensure that I remember as much as possible I have made myself a Good Things Jar. This jar is a large glass monstrosity with a hole in the top, into which I will place little slips of paper briefly describing good things that have happened to me. I’ll add them to the jar as and when and keep it sealed otherwise. Then, on December 31, close to the count down, I’ll crack it open and remind myself of all the incredible things that have happened to me over the course of the year.
That’s not all! I’m also taking this to Twitter. If you follow me there, you may have already noticed the appearance of a new hashtag in my stream; #GoodThingsJar2013. If I’m not able to get to a piece of paper or my jar I’ve decided that rather that risking forgetting, I’ll add the event/memory to my virtual Good Things Jar. This is Twitter and each of these things, when I add them, will be tweeted with that hashtag.

Since I’m really in love with this idea (and I’ve only modified it from something I saw floating around Facebook) I invite you all to join me. Please feel free to start your own virtual ‘Good Things Jar’ and use #GoodThingsJar2013 to record them. If you don’t use Twitter, then use your blog and I’ll come up with a way for us to interact and talk to each other about our happy events/memories. Probably using Linky Tools or PollDaddy (I’ve not decided yet). I would love to share all my happy bits and bobs with you, because it’s important to remember that good things do happen. People are always quick to share annoyances and bad news, but good news doesn’t travel nearly so fast. Hopefully 2013 and this new hashtag will be the way to change that.

I hope you’ll join me!

Liebster Blog Award, Take Two

A little ray of sunshine in an otherwise exhausting and scummy week. I’d forgotten about these awards and the wonderful people who nominated me.

The first is the Liebster Award for which I was nominated by Susan Karins, the other I’ll talk about next time.liebster blog award

There seems to be far more to these awards that I remember so I will take my time over answering/generating questions.

Da Rulez

  • When one receives the award, one posts 11 random facts about oneself and answers the 11 questions asked by the person who nominated you.
  • Pass the award onto 11 other blogs (while making sure one notifies the blogger that one nominated them!)
  • One writes up 11 NEW questions directed towards YOUR nominees.
  • One is not allowed to nominate the blog who nominated one’s own blog!
  • One pastes the award picture into one’s blog. (You can Google the image, there are plenty of them, though look out for the rights to the image!)

Gosh, right, that’s a lot to be getting on with!

Let’s start with Susan’s 11 questions:

What is your favourite season and why?
Autumn. For sure. I’ve talked about it here, but I’ll say again, that there is enough left of Summer and little enough of Winter that I can enjoy the beautiful colours out there. And the weather, such as it ever is in this country, is pleasant enough to enjoy.

Who are your three favourite authors?
JRR Tolkien, Robert Jordan, Shaun Hutson.

Which was the last book that surprised you and why?
The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did and to power through the other two as fast as I did. I really enjoyed the Katniss Everdeen character and couldn’t wait to see what happened to her next.

If your novel would be made into a movie who would you cast as your male and female lead? If you’re not a writer, who would you cast in a movie, any movie?
I love this question, but I still have trouble answering it. I guess if I work on Silk Over Razor Blades as the novel to cast, Ileandra is the female lead. The male lead is a bit trickier to pin as there are three possibilities; Nick, Tristen and Brad (and Saar). Ileandra I’d have played by a younger Naomie Harris. She has the look that means she could start weak and grow to become the strong woman we see by the end (she’s also English which is a big plus for me). Her or Brandy Norwood, before she went all Hollywood and began to straighten her hair. Think back to her Moesha days. Tristen I’d have played by Ben Barnes; I think he could pull it off so long as he lost the cute boy look. Or rather, if he could pull off ‘steamy, sexy and authoritative’ while his hair is long. Brad would have to be Liam Neeson; he could pull that off no problem (and Brad Pitt, though the age is right, is still too good looking). Nick… that’s harder; I think I’d cast Jared Padalecki into that role. He has the look and I can image him being able to pull off the ‘excited over supernatural’ aspect of Nick’s personality.

What is your favourite vacation spot?
Hmm… Venice. It was so beautiful there and the fact that there were no cars was just wonderful. I loved it! So many beautiful things to look at, funny shops and kindly people. And of course, the fact that it’s all on water is novel too.

If you would get a pet right now, what would you name him/her and why?
Squishy. I can’t help it, but Finding Nemo still sticks in my head and all I can think of is; ‘And I will call him Squishy and he will be mine. And he will be my Squishy.’ ^_^

What is your favourite TV Series?
At the moment, The Big Bang Theory. The show is a recent discovery for me but I watch it several times a day now and it’s become my go-to show when bored. Fortunately for me it’s on E4 all the time so I rarely have to wait all that long for the next episode.

Twitter fan or Twitter critic?
Fan. I luuuuurve Twitter and don’t really use it as much as I want to. I guess I can look into that in the new year; it shouldn’t be hard… I have it linked to my phone.

What was the last item you bought?
Eeeerm… a pack of four (pink and purple) plastic bowls with lids. …for the boys.

What was the best present you’ve ever received?
My boys! ^_^ Cheesy I know, but they were born two days before my birthday and even spending my birthday in the hospital was the best day ever as I got to spend it with my growing family and the two latest additions.

What is your favourite coffee table book?
The Darwin Awards. *snerk* any year, it doesn’t matter. Just reading about all the idiot things mankind is capable of amuses me no end.

Next… 11 random facts about me. Let’s see:

  1. I hate crowds. Shopping is really hard for me as when I’m in a crowd I have the overwhelming urge to shove and kick people who get in my way.
  2. I didn’t actually read The Lord Of The Rings until after I’d listened to the BBC Radio 4 dramatisation.
  3. I have three pale birthmarks across my body; one of them I didn’t find until I was pregnant.
  4. I ate several buttons in my youth. I haven’t seen them come out yet.
  5. My favourite German word is zerelarian, though I may have remembered that incorrectly because having searched for it in Google Translate the word doesn’t seem to exist (I thought it meant cereal).
  6. I still own machines that can play VHS tapes and cassette tapes. Oh and CDs (not my computer).
  7. In early years I wanted to be a nurse (and a vet. A teacher. An actor).
  8. Butterflies creep me the hell out.
  9. I’ve been this height (5’8) since I was fourteen years old.
  10. I think I may have broken my little toe on my right foot (maybe even twice) but I never had it diagnosed.
  11. My hair is now so large and thick that I have difficulty wearing hats. Which is a real issue because I like hats.

Now, I’m conscious of the rest of the rules, but I have to say that in recent months I haven’t been able to read any blogs. I feel an overwhelming need to apologise, though I’m repeatedly told that such a thing isn’t necessary. Regardless, I’m left in a position where I’m not really able to pass the nomination. 😦

When time is more forgiving and I have more of it, I’ll return to doing these properly, however, until then, should it become relevant, I’ll say now that I follow the bare bones of the rules. Until then, thank you Susan! x
