Nothing Is Ever Good Enough

I am very hard to please. This isn’t a recent discovery, but one I’ve wanted to analyse for some time. Why do I always push? Why is nothing ever good enough?

Consider:
Since officially leaving my last job (February) and starting my own business (April) I have earned money, published articles and appeared in magazines. All while taking care of my sons. My writing, despite no longer working a 9-5 job, still takes a back seat, but I have achieved more, so far this year, than in any other to date.

Let me outline my achievements this year, as I see them.
-started my own business (and had two paying clients, and three enquiries)
-a letter in Writing Magazine
-a letter in Writers Forum
-entered at least two writing competitions per month since January
-successfully pitched an article to a magazine (on my first try!) and will shortly receive payment
-started the background work on getting Slippers & Chains in print
-turned over enough regular non fiction writing since May to average £30 a week in additional income
-lost over a stone (we’re talking weight now), over the course of two-three months
-taken on at-home learning and earned a certificate in Working In Mental Health
-written five short stories and probably three times as much flash fiction

And there’s probably more than that. I find it hard to think of these things on the spot, despite my Good Things Jar. So why am still unhappy? Why am I still pushing? Why do I look back over what I have done and tell myself ‘that’s not good enough.’?

Why, why, why!

Do I call it a real and honest urge to do better, or is it just the inability to be satisfied with what I have? Ambition is a good thing, but constantly striving for more because nothing I have (or have done) is good enough to suit me, is just damaging.

Hmm.

I can’t decide which it is. I’m probably going to spend the next couple of hours (weeks) thinking about it (and then being dissatisfied with my answer).

*sigh*
Oh well.
Here’s a picture of a cute cat to fill the void.

Slippers & Chains – Part Two

Good evening folks. Thanks for your patience and your continued visits to the blog! For those of you who are new, or have come here through Twitter/Facebook/YouTube, welcome!

A little later than I originally intended, here is the second episode of Slippers & Chains!

In a quick recap, I have decided to read this novella to you, chapter by chapter, before releasing it as an ebook. The story follows Daniel and Karen, a cute, loving couple whose relationship has a central core of kinky BDSM.

See here for Part One and enjoy Part Two; Daniel Says… ‘Don’t Be So Fifties!’

Woohoo, and done! Thanks for watching, folks. I’ll catch you all next time!

Peace! x

When Ideas Come

bright idea yellow light bulb, OpenClipArtDoes it hit you like a bolt of lightening? Does it slap you like a wet fish? Does it tickled in your nose like a hackneyed cliché? When the idea hits you, what do you do?

I’m a busy woman. Some of that is to do with how many jobs I’ve given myself, the rest is to do with how poorly I manage my time. I’ll admit that freely. If there was a magical way to organise all the jobs I would like to do versus what I can do, then I’d be the first to fork out cash to own it. But there isn’t. Which means I have lots of ideas floating around in my head that need to be controlled. And I have more coming every day.

I’ve recently started keeping an Ideas Book. I used to have a file on my desktop which served this purpose, but I can’t remember the last time I turned that machine on, so it’s pretty useless to me there. Similarly, there is one on this laptop, but that doesn’t help me in the middle of the night when I wake up, blink, and realise that I have the bestest best of best ideas in the whole entire wooooooorld!. So I write them down by hand – what a novelty! – and keep them.

There is a notebook by my bed slowly filling with late night ideas that have to be written down at the exact moment I have them, lest they be lost forever. I have another in my rucksack that I carry around with me everywhere, ready to scribble things in as they come. And finally I have my mobile. My trusty smartphone with a record function. I wish I could remember which of you fine readers suggested I should utilise that feature, but I can’t. So this is a blanket thank you. Thank you, whoever you are, for giving me the idea that I have since been able to use. There are now dozens of audio files on my phone, featuring my quivering voice. These files contain snippets of dialogue, interesting descriptions, narrative, plot hooks, characters, names, even information on potential markets and competitions. And I have it with me all the time. That’s the beauty of a mobile phone.

I’ve even started keeping note of interesting blog ideas that pop into my head. Too often now, have I come up with a topic and told myself, ‘oh I’ll remember that.’ Fast forward a couple of minutes and I can just about remember my own name let alone the blog idea I had. So I’ve taken to writing down titles.

As a result, I’m finding it fractionally easier to keep up with my posting schedule right now. Having a bit of a lead (like I did this time last year) is more helpful than I realised. Even if I have a little more time than I did this time last year, I still need to use it wisely.

How do you guys go about keeping your ideas in check? Do you have a special way of recording them then and there? Or is that just a weird and freaky ‘me’ thing?

Slippers & Chains – Part One

Good morning everyone. Welcome to the first episode of my latest project, Slippers & Chains. Last week I mentioned that I would be reading these pieces to you and I’ll elaborate now by saying that each ‘episode’ equates to a chapter of the novella. Some will be shorter than others. Some will be funnier than others. Regardless, each reading will further the story of Karen and Daniel and their relationship.

The videos will be available to view on YouTube (week by week) and will also posted to my Facebook page.

I see no need for further preamble: here is part one. ‘Karen Says….

Thanks SO much for watching. If you’d like to leave a comment, I’d really appreciate it. Please do so below.

Until next time!
