Bonus Blog: I Can’t Get No Sleep


I’m sure there are many reasons for this. On Monday when I asked the doctor, she did assure me that its a very standard part of pregnancy. It was a problem right at the start and then again this week; I’ve spent a lot of time on my computer (and/or laptop) after midnight, tapping out little pieces of flash, reading followed blogs and arsing about on Twitter. Oh and I’ve played a lot of Race For The Galaxy as well.

Even now, this is a stupidly late blog post, going out because I have this crazed urge to keep producing content for all you fine people, despite the fact that I’ve stuck faithfully to my Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday schedule since I announced it.

The doctor maintains that my increasing size, loosening hips and hormones are all joining forces to keep me awake. I think that my brain is just too freaking busy to shut the hell up when its bed time. That coupled with increasing size, loosening hips and hormones. o.O

Its uncomfortable lying down these days; listening to my joints crack as I try to turn from one side to another on a bed that should, in truth, be more than large enough for myself and Dave. In a week’s time (a week!!!) I’ll miss this bed, to be sure; I may well be doing an overnight in a hospital bed. I may not; it may be done and over well before it gets to this time of night, but who can tell? Nature does whatever the hell she wants and, despite my reservations, that’s how it should be.

I heard another theory though. In one of the very many books I’ve been kindly given on the subject, the author puts forth the opinion that insomnia is pregnancy is practise. Fragmented sleep patterns and screwed up body clocks are the body’s way of preparing for the inevitability of exactly that with a newborn around. I quite like it as a theory. I don’t believe it… not for a second, but I do rather like it.

What do you guys think? Any juicy kernals of pregnancy/labour/childcare wisdom before I pop ’em out? 😉

    SIL recommends not getting dressed for at least a week after childbirth. People come round to coo, see you in jammies, don’t judge because of the newborns, and do your dishes, hold onto crying babies, make you a cup of tea, tell you to sit down and relax. It doesn’t last forever – make the most of it 🙂

    You might deliver early (ducks and hides from angry pregnant woman). I was unable to sleep, and in crazy nesting mode (read: cleaning the house and doing weird craft projects for the baby) for a couple days before I delivered.

    Either way, at least it’s almost over! 🙂

    • The nesting thing is mad; I’ve never been do conscious of how clean or tidy things are before!
      The house looks great though, which I suppose is a good thing as I won’t have time later.
      Counting down the days!

    Well, my first-born slept through the night almost immediately. My second-born was a terrible sleeper for the first 2 years (waking up at 1am and staying up until 4am–every morning). With both pregnancies I had a terrible time sleeping but that’s because I was suffering from sciatica. So, I’m not a good, objective judge I’m afraid.

    I would imagine that a body changing as rapidly as one does during pregnancy would affect sleep patterns, that just seems logical to me. Whether it is prepping for later–it’s probably hogwash as not all babies wake throughout the night.

    • Wow, two years of utterly broken sleep-ness! And through both pregnancies too, eh? And yet some women I’ve spoken to have said (despite the little one being a mere three days old) that they’re already sleeping through the night, like your first-born.
      I suppose it really is down to that particular child and how they function.
      Hehee, hopefully these two will at least be in some sort of sync.

      • I have two friends with twins and heard from both of them that the babies keep approximately the same schedule! Here’s hoping yours do! I definitely recommend keeping the lights and noise level low at night while you’re up with them. My first was a non-sleeper, and had her days and nights mixed up, so I’d often turn on the lights, get food, etc. With #2, I keep the lights off and play on my computer while nursing, and she’s been a pretty good sleeper. She has never been confused about days and nights, thank goodness!

        • I was playing with the monitor I bought yesterday. Its got a lovely little night light on it, so I should be able to get away with no putting lights on and it plays lullabies. I think, all in all – since I tend to walk around the house in the dark anyway – it should be all that bad to keep day and night separate entities.

    I liked believing insomnia was practice too, it’s far from the same but trust me you’ll be fine. Somehow we adjust and it’s all worth it. Best of luck to you!
