#GoodThingsJar2013 December Update

Good things jar at the end of December 2013

Credit: ME! :p

There you have it. December done. Down. Dusted.

And this >>>> is my good things jar. What an incredible year it’s been! What with all the wonderful things that have happened to me and I now have evidence of all of them. Here.

December… of course with it being Christmas, there are all sorts of great happenings to be pleased about, but there are a couple of particulars that stick out in my mind.

Seeing Old Friends

I don’t get to see Gemma very often and every time I do it’s a lovely experience. We went to Birmingham and mooched around the German markets. We both had wonderful news to share and it was a real treat to be able to go. Taking Celine with me only made it better; two of my favourite people close by me in a place full of fun things to eat and buy!

The Hobbit

While I have had a little bit of a whine about the film I can’t deny that I enjoyed it. And the producers certainly got it right by releasing only once a year. It ensures that around this time of year excitement is at a fever-pitch and people are all but frothing at the mouth to get to the cinema. I know I was.

Writing, Writing, Writing

No time off. Not really. I have enough ‘time off’ in the day while looking after the boys I didn’t want to stop working because it was December. So I kept scribbling. The result is that I have some flash and a short story in need of editing, meaning I’ll soon have more stories suitable for submission. Raven has been busy too; hacking away at the Meeting Each Other series to make it perfect for you.

I’ve enjoy the project so much that I’ll be continuing into this year. New jar, new slips of paper, new good things. I’m not going to report on them each month though. I think with all the plans I have in store there just won’t be time to do it all. But, of course, when something particularly good happens, you can expect a bonus blog about it.Particularly if it’s related to what this blog is all about.

I hope you’re all well and enjoying the year so far. It’s looking to be a good one!

Bonus Blog – Achievements of 2013

Today I’d like to talk about all the things we achieved. Part of it is linked to the wonderful slips of paper from the Good Things Jar, but most of those things are personal. They are things that, while good for us, are mostly great for the brain behind us.

Confused? If you’re new to the blog you probably will be. If not, then… have you been paying attention?

The names Ileandra Young and Raven ShadowHawk are pseudonyms employed by one woman. We, that is to say, Raven and I, are two sides of the same coin. So while we have our own goals, the mind behind us has a life outside ours. And that is what the Good Things Jar was for.

Anyway. This post is to remind us of just how much we have managed to achieve through the course of 2013 and to show us that no matter how flat we feel, how tired we get, how rough the way ahead looks, we’ve done plenty to be proud of.

Maintained and continued to write to this blog
Seems like a small feat when put this way, but raising twin boys (or any children, for that matter) is a full time job. I gave up my day job to be able to do this and though it is terrifying, I still feel that it was the right thing to do. I have more time now, than I would have done if still working, to do all the writing projects I want to do and I get to see my boys grow. Can’t fault that.

Entered several short story (9) and flash fiction (7) competitions
I only totted this up yesterday. Can’t quite believe that it’s been that many submissions. No wins, but the act of submitting is what puts me in the running and I’m proud of that. It gets me out there. It lets the world know that I’m here and that I have a story to tell. And one day I’ll win… one day.

Developed a system of establishing goals and meeting them daily/weekly/monthly with tangible success
My posts about goals are more for me than for you and the effect it has had on my out put is immense. You can see that by putting things into lists and breaking it all down, everything is advancing in leaps and bounds. The habit is something would recommend for all of you, in whatever form suits you best.

Built a strong collection of flash fiction and short stories suitable for submission/publication
It’s always useful to have a store of material. Things that can be modified for last minute competition entries, or put together into a collection at a later date. Most of these are from competition entries, but others are just small things I wrote in a quite moment. Each and every one is something to be proud of and one day they’ll all have a home. Even if that’s just on this blog.

Completed NaNoWriMo in 11 days and completed novel draft in 22 days (personal best)
Never in a million years did I anticipate such speed. And I put that down to having a working outline. Something I’ve never done before. It allowed me to whizz through writing the piece which, even in first draft, is far better than any other incarnation to date. Silk Over Razor Blades is now on its way to becoming a physical book that I can hold in my hands. The day is coming and it will be this year. I’ve never been more excited.

Stepped out of the closet
Rather than ‘hiding’ behind me, Raven now has her own presence on this blog, Twitter, Facebook and, frankly put, anywhere else I poke my nose. It’s nice to have company out there, y’know? And it means that we’ve both met a lot of interesting and talented people.

Published ‘Vicki & Lara’
It might not make sense since Raven is my ‘other half’ but I’m very jealous of this achievement. In the space of a year Raven has stepped out from my shadow proven herself worthy and published through Little Vamp Press. And there are more in the pipe line. I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention to the count down at the top of the blog, but Jan 31 is the release of the next story in that series. Look out for it!

Made decisions about future works and self publishing
Following the actions of Kobo and WH Smiths Raven has taken the massive decision to publish all of her work through our publishing label Little Vamp Press. The idea of control is attractive to her – go figure – and while we both know it’s a harder route to take, the learning curve involved is something we both anticipate enjoying. So well done her.

Really not bad over all. There’s a good deal more, I’m sure, but we don’t have all day. Consider this post the highlights of our achievements in 2013 and our promise to do more in the year coming up.

What about you? How are your achievements of 2013? Why not take a moment to sit down and look back at all the wonderful things you’ve done. I’ll bet you’ll find that you’ve done far more than you realised. ^_^

WordPress Reviews 2013

Lovely! I always enjoy looking at these. WordPress gives me a neat little run down of all the action across the blog in the previous year. And, because I like that kind of thing, I share it with you.

So… here is 2013, direct from the WordPress.com stats helper monkeys.

Here’s an excerpt:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 17,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 6 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Mah Goals – wc 30/12

Done. It’s over. Christmas is done for another year.

The boys are still receiving presents from various sources, but I think the flow has ebbed now. Thank goodness! The thought of more wrapping paper and boxes makes me feel twitchy.

As I suspected, last week was a wash out. Not much done and now there’s a lingering malaise which is only partly to do with a recurrence of that bizarre allergic reaction I talked about some time ago.

Sorry the post is late, too. I went to the doctors this morning and then straight back to bed. I woke up at 6pm! I guess that means I’ll be up all night now. :p

Last Week

Start real work on ‘I Need A Break’ rather than just thinking about it.
Yeeeah… no. Just no. 😦

Check daily for paid work.
Again, mostly daily. Quite a few of those days though, all the sites had shut down. Not too surprised by that, but I’ll need to kick things back into gear for regular extra income when the new year comes in.

Make rough list of what I want to achieve in 2014 in preparation for goal reassessment.
Yep. I’m starting to think I’m overdoing it just a little, but I have some time to adjust, it needs be. Ambition is good, but being unrealistic is just damaging. So I’m going to look over the again tomorrow and do a little bit of tweaking.

Continue working on ‘Eric & Morgan’ at least 500 words.
Just the 500 words. Could have done better in a normal week, but I think with the influx of family and friends, this was pretty good going.

Leave SORB alone! Don’t change it, don’t mess with it, nothing!
Still avoiding it. Though the piece is growing on my mind now so, I’m thinking mid January, I’m going to print the whole thing off and start making notes on paper. Not my usual method, but since I wrote the whole thing in an unusual way (for me) I’m going to continue trying new things.

ENJOY CHRISTMAS!!!
Oh, yeah baby. Good food, the never ending turkey, lovely presents, wonderful company and not too much chocolate. What more can I say besides; yeeeeeey!

Goals For This Week

Since it’s the end of the year it’s a very short list. I’ll be kicking a new set of goals into gear when I do my usual round up of the year, but before Wednesday I would like to do the following.

  • Another 500 words of ‘Eric & Morgan’
  • Continue to check for paid work
  • Finalise outline of goals for 2014
  • Write and post offering for Phoenix Subs Club blog
  • Continue to leave SORB alone! Don’t change it, don’t mess with it, nothing!

Woop. Sorted.

I’m really looking forward to 1 Jan! The coming of a new year isn’t usually so busy with glee, but this year… I don’t know… maybe because I’ve already achieved so much… I know that I can do what I set out to do with the right levels of planning and dedication. Makes looking forward a really positive experience!

I hope you guys can say the same. I’ll see you on the other side. ^_^
