RS: A Literary Taboo?

I’m reading a book! *gasp*

I know, I know. A long time has passed before I read anything for fun, but given that last week was a holiday I thought it was about time that I gave myself a bit of pleasure in that regard. While Ileandra munched through ‘The Bullet Catcher’s Daughter’ with almost no breaks, I’ve finally been able to start on a book I’ve had on the Kindle for quite some time: ‘The Sweetest Taboo’ by Harper Miller.

Now . . . I don’t know how or where or when, but I know the name Harper Miller. It pops up a lot and I’ve convinced myself that I’ve read many, many books by this woman. I haven’t. At least, not from looking at the available books listed on Amazon. But something about this woman has drawn me in and I feel like I know her, even though I clearly don’t.

Anyway, that’s by the by. It is only the start of what I want to talk about today which is the title of the book, the category it falls under and how I feel about it as a whole.

First up, ‘The Sweetest Taboo’ as a title is great. It brings to mind the song by Sade and makes me thing sweet, sexy, sensual things.

However . . . the taboo part bothers me and the tagline which follows: ‘An unconventional romance.’ I haven’t finished reading the book yet, I’m less than 50% through it, according to the Kindle, but I have to wonder what is taboo and unconventional about the relationship? Is it the fact that it is a D/s dynamic? That it’s a D/s dynamic between a man and a woman? That the D/s dynamic is between a white man and a black woman? I’m not far enough through to tell, though part of me leans towards the idea that it is all of the above and that Harper has been very clever with her title. Hats off to her.

But . . . ! Why?

I suppose the BDSM aspect of the relationship is going to be unconventional however you swing it, but what about the interracial side? It could very well be that I’m over thinking this – I do that a lot – but there’s another layer to this ‘unconventional romance’ that, while it isn’t given centre stage, does bear thinking of. Why are interracial couplings so exciting/taboo/unconventional? And I don’t mean just white/black, I mean any mixed coupling at all?

DSB’s first boyfriend was a white man three (or six?) years older than her. He lived in Darlington and was an absolute sweetheart. But when she visited him the looks they received together ranged from open-mouthed shock to outright rage. And why? They hadn’t done anything or said anything, they just went about their business.

Her current significant other is another white man (more years) older than her and in the early days, based in Leicester which is, apparently, the multi-cultural hub of the Midlands, the curious stares seemed far more linked to the age gap (though of course it’s impossible to tell for sure without calling people out on it, something that DSB is never likely to do).

I guess, in my rambling sort of way I’m asking why there is a market for these specific things that are considered ‘taboo’. And why they are considered taboo? I mean, it is like guiltily watching gay porn while crowing about your heterosexuality? Is it like scoffing a tub of ice cream all by yourself and hiding the tub when your other half comes home so he doesn’t know what a pig you are? *ahem*

I want to understand . . .

As I look today, ‘The Sweetest Taboo’ has 86 reviews on Amazon. 86! Double figures the likes of which I can only dream of. I’ve not read them all – of course! – but the comments are glowing and I wonder what drew these readers to the book in the first place. Unless Harper had a strong following before she started publishing, these people have come to her fresh. So what drew them in? The cover (which is GORGEOUS by the way)? The tagline? The title?

Maybe I’m naive. Maybe I’m just sooooooooooo liberal that I just can’t process why anybody might have a problem with LGBTQ relationships, or BDSM, or interracial couplings, or polyamory or any number of things that I’ve been writing about since I started this writing gig. But isn’t it interesting?

And on the flip side of that, why do I like writing about these things so much? What draws me in? The ‘Slippers & Chains’ series has a D/s interracial coupling at its core and touches on LGBTQ relationships as well as polyamory! It’s all in there. So why?

-_-

I guess when I have the answer to these questions I’ll know more about the world as well as myself, but until then I’m just going to stew on it. Sorry for the babbly, rambly, not-very-well-joined-up post.

I’ll bring it all back together tonight for my goals. Promise. 😉

IY: Mah Plans 11/05

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. ^_^

So you know, DSB had a wonderful time at the LARP and can’t wait to go back in July. I have had an incredible week off and I’ve enjoyed it so much that I almost don’t want to work any more. Dossing around and using Facebook and watching TV has been a right treat, rather than filling me evenings with scribbling.Football goal posts from OpenClipArt

Only problem with that is . . . I’ll be bored before long. And if I do that, I’ll no longer feel the warm glow at having struck things off my list of goals.

So . . . I’ll treasure the memory of a pleasant week to myself and get right back on with it.

Actions Last Week

Send three more book review/spotlight requests
Yes and no… yes, I sent some emails, no, they weren’t to people from my list of contacts. The people I spoke to were those who were originally to be hosts as part of my blog tour back in December. Some are still able to help, even if not the way they once were, and others cannot. Nonetheless, it was a productive collection of email conversations that I’ll be rounding off later tonight.

RELAX!
If running about in the woods can be considered relaxing, then yes I did that . . . or DSB did. But I didn’t do much work, which was the main point of this goal. No editing, no drafting, no marketing pushing or anything. So yes, done.

Read something . . . for fun ^_^
Yes actually. I’m reading ‘The Bullet Catchers Daughter‘ by Rod Duncan, a lovely gentleman under whom I studied with the Leicester Writing School. A funny, talented and intelligent man, this book is the first of his I’ve dipped into. And I’m enjoying it more than I anticipated. DSB and Wayne Kelly would have talked about this during their JuPod episode with Rod himself, and the fact that the novel was nominated for the Philip K Dick award back in April.
I have had my usual flutters of ‘Urk, someone else waaaaay better than I can hope to be’ but I’ve done my best to stamp that down and just enjoy the book. The Kindle tells me I’m 72% through – so far, so good!

Activities For The Week

Rest time is over. Back to the grindstone. I have a novel to edit and something like seven weeks to do it in. I’d better get on with it!

  • Create ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ cheat sheet for each important character, reminding me of their arc so I can refer to it constantly while editing.
  • Edit at least 10k words of ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ – go direct to Scrivener
  • Send this month’s newsletter.

Thoughts…

I’m going to start with those cheat sheets and keep them in hard copy because I think something that made SORB so difficult to edit was that I had plenty of other ideas swirling around, but they mostly related to future books. Now I have SORB swirling through my head when I should be thinking about ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge.’ So the cheat sheet will remind me how far along the overall arc each character will travel in this book and put me in good stead for editing ‘On A Knife Point’ later this year.

Also I haven’t really been including back ground bits and bobs like admin and marketing in these goals, but I need to start doing so in order to see if what I’m doing is making any different. I’m not sure of how to do that yet, but something will come up no doubt.

Meantime, I feel flustered as one side of my brain is telling me I have buckets of work to do, but the other, more organised side of my brain insists that everything is under control and that I’m worrying needlessly. I  have no idea which side to listen to!

I hope this is left over LARP brain and that come this time next week I’ll be back on form. Won’t know until then!

DSB: Real Life Bits 09/05 – EINs and ITINs and Other Admin

I logged into Smashwords the other day and realised something mega cool . . . I have money! Woo! But before I can get it I need an ITIN or an EIN to ensure that the IRS don’t take 30% of my earnings (heh, that enough acronyms for ya?). Anyway, this also made me realise that there are a bunch of other things that I’ve let slide, dreaded admin that surrounds being both a self publishing author and a publisher in my own right.

Since both Ileandra and Raven are in a bit of a lull I thought it prudent to actually do some of it.

EINs and ITINs!

For those of you who don’t know these are the bane of any indie publisher’s life. I’ve read buckets of blog posts about people struggling to get one of these magical numbers and fighting with the IRS, their local US Embassy, Amazon, W-8BEN forms or SS-4 forms (ARGH!) and for what?

Well . . . if anybody outside the US sells their goodies within the US, then the IRS will withhold a portion of those sales as tax. Unless . . . your country of residence has a tax treaty with them. Which the UK does (woohoo!). With the right paperwork we can reduce withheld taxes from 30% to 0% which, as numbers (hopefully) increase, will be a substantial chunk of money.

To do this, indie publishers – or any other non-resident person trading within the US – needs an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) or an EIN (Employer Identification Number).

If you follow the outlines indicated by Amazon or Smashwords then there are tonnes of forms to fill in and waiting times and back and forth and uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh! I got on the phone at 11.30am last Tuesday and had my EIN written on a piece of paper by 11.43am. So . . . it can be easy.

I called ’00 1 267 941 1099′ from my landline, hit ‘1’ to indicate I was a non-US resident, then spoke to a lovely, patient lady called ‘Mrs Smith’ who asked me a small list of questions about how I’m trading and when. She then gave me the EIN. That’s it. I can’t use it for a couple of weeks because they need to process it and ensure it’s in the system, but after that I can give it to Smashwords and finally claim Raven’s money.

Considering this is something I’ve put off for months because of how difficult it was, this whole process was startling simple. As to the ITIN? Y’dun need it. If you’re not a US citizen, you don’t want a number that says you are. No wonder people have been finding it so hard to get them.

If you want more detail on the ins and outs and backs and forth of this stuff, speak to somebody who knows about taxes. Or an accountant. I’m neither of those things and certainly can’t give advice, but this worked for me. As to the blogs I used to find this information check out:

Catherine Ryan Howard – One

Cathering Ryan Howard – Two

Caroline Gebbie

They’ve lovely people and both posts and mega helpful, particularly Caroline’s. ^_^

As for all the other stuff . . .

ISBNs

I have ISBNs. I forked out for them back in 2013 when ‘Vicki & Lara’ went live and have been steadily using them for releases since then. If you visit Nielsen you’ll find Little Vamp Press there as a publisher and all the titles published through that name.

Unfortunately it wasn’t until last week that I realised that even though I’ve updated all of my info about releases subsequent to the release of ‘Vicki & Lara’ I hadn’t told Nielsen. The most important people to inform. Oops!

If I want the public, on a broader scale, to know about my releases, then I need to tell them. Their database is what major book retailers check. What libraries check. What book distributors check. If my info isn’t up to date there, I will never be found! Oops x2!

I should mention by the way, this is for publishers based in the UK as Nielsen is the distributor of UK ISBNs. For those of you in the rest of the world, a quick search across the interwebs will tell you what you need to get your hands on some tasty ISBNs for your releases.

The Write Feeling

Though I still do a little editing and critiquing, it is no longer a primary focus for me as a sole trading entity. I’m a writer and a publisher, so that is where my mind is at. I’ve finally done the final clean up and closed that website down as well as routing the DNS away form WordPress. So . . . if anybody has been trying to contact me on that email since mid March, sorry! It will work now.

My Taxes

It’s April now. The tax year 2014-15 is over. Fortunately for me my tax year matches that of HMRC but for five days which means it’s really easy for me to do my books (that wasn’t at all a deliberate decision :-p). I did my form filling this time last year for 2013-14 and it took 45 mins. This year, I plan to be just as speedy about it so I can get it out the way and forget about it (and be smug at all those folk still panicking about it in December/January).

Life

Dunno if this counts as an ‘admin update’ but  I’ve been keeping up with my writing fit regimen and doing lots of walking. Mainly walking so far, with the occasional stop at the park gym to do some rowing and bench lifts/presses/whatever the hell they’re called. Aside from achy feet (I’m walking for about an hour, non stop, every day bar Sundays) and worn socks I’m not seeing much difference. Guess these things take time. ^_^

So this feels like something of a ‘spring clean’ update. Which is nice. How are you guys all getting on? Real life hitting you in the knackers, or are you hitting back with a smile and a wave?

RS: I Haz Planz 07/05 & April Round Up

I’m not here! It’s an illuuuuuuusion!

Okay, I am here, but not here as I might normally be. DSB is off on the road, ready to go be an elf in the marvellous end of South Wales.

Actions Last Weekblank calendar from OpenClipArt

~Mail three reviewer/spotlight bloggers over the course of the week
Nope. Just nope. Somehow that just seemed to slip by me. Aaaah well.

~Visit two stores locally to see if they would like to stock Meeting Each Other: The Full Story
I got to one. I have to go to the central office. Pain in the ass. 😦  The other I didn’t manage to get to so maybe I can do that later on.

~Follow up my Ann Summers pitch
. . . moving on.

~Start preparing a second Twory
😦

So not a great week. Fortunately this is a slow month for me and none of this stuff is essential. Phew!

April 2015 Round Up

Well . . .

~Get paperback version of ‘Meeting Each Other; The Full Story’ available for sale on Amazon and CreateSpace.
Hahaaaa! Done.

~Send out this month’s newsletter
Sorted. Nearly onto quarterly updates.

~Devise a sensible, non-spammy marketing campaign that is fun and sustainable
Gonna see how the Twories go. After a couple of months of that I’ll look into something else.

Change That Shit Up!

So where does that leave me now for the rest of year? Well, kinda like this. Completed tasks struck out, changes in red text, additions in green text.

  1. Have paperback version of ‘Meeting Each Other’ series complete and for sale by end of April
  2. Edit ‘Slippers & Chains: Second Base’ following comments from beta readers by the end of June.
  3. Draft ‘Slippers & Chains Three’ (and give it a damn title!) by November 2015 (probably during NaNoWriMo)
  4. Begin editing ‘Slippers & Chains Three’ (at least as far as a Kindle Read) by December 2015.
  5. Switch to a more manageable newsletter schedule of quarterly postings with bonuses for new releases when the current ‘New Pet’ story is done.

Targets for May 2015

The news from Breathless Press has really knocked me about a bit. It means I can (and should) slow right down so that I can properly self edit the series to fit the standards I demand for Little Vamp Press.

This means I need to speak a bit more time going over what I want to do and how. But this month is mostly about Ileandra editing ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ so my goals are kinda diddy. Let’s see.

  1. Collate comments from beta readers and begin tentative edits.

Activities For This Week

Nothing! This is a week off. No goals, let’s just leave things as they are, let DSB enjoy the LARP and get back to work when we’re all back. 🙂

Thoughts…

Not really much to add here. I’ll do all the small bits and bobs, let Ileandra do her thing with ‘Walking The Razor’s Edge’ and then we’re away!
