80 Post Challenge – Post 30

What 5 traits do people first notice when they meet you for the first time?

I don’t know if these are traits as much as horrific defects. Lol. Okay, yeah, that’s a bit strong, but I did ask people in preparation for this post and I’m fascinated by the results.

Smile
wide red lips smiling OpenClipArtNot so much a trait as a feature. I certainly don’t mind though. Its nice that something which comes so naturally to me seems to gather so much attention. I love smiling; it takes so less effort than many other things you can do with your face and it feels good too. Its also a reflection of the rest of me, since I hope that I’m a cheerful person…

Near Constant Cheeriness
cheerful happy kitty/kitten OpenClipArt…and apparently people agree. I remember a time back in the early days of my 9-5 job that I’d bimble in at 8am and anyone else unlucky enough to be there at hour would stare at me in disgust. When I began to wonder what it was about, I managed to collar someone long enough to ask and they said; ‘You shouldn’t be this cheerful so early in the morning.’ Ah. Well. Fair enough then. Lol.

Enthusiasm
little girl in gold dress OpenClipArtSome of my interview feedback included this; particularly when I used my work on various novels to answer one of the questions. They said that the passion and enthusiasm shone through enough to make it one of the best answers I gave. Shame about the others really… but how easy it is it to get passionate and enthusiastic about a customer who can’t/won’t stop whining?

Confidence
confident thumbs up OpenClipArtWhere people get this one from I don’t know. Maybe they’re looking at someone else? Most of the time I feel anything but confident; worried about what I’m doing, how I’m doing it and all that junk. You know, normal, human worries. But other people don’t seem to get that from me. I suppose that’s a good thing. Perhaps all that LARPing and make believe has rubbed off to the point that I really do believe I have nothing to fear because I’m an immortal elf. Bwa ha haaa ahhaa!

Weirdness
weird abstract face in sculptureI think its thoughts like the above that leads to this last one. People call me weird with relish. And they get a grip on that really quickly. If they hang out with me for a little bit longer then they also add ‘geeky’ to the little list they’re making in their minds. Its fascinating to realise how much of myself I wear on my sleeve. I always figured that I was a private and quiet person but no… everyone knows about the stuff I like and some of the stuff I don’t! And the stuff I like is, for want of a better word, weird….

80 Post Challenge – Post 29

Name something you would like to devote more time to seeing or doing.

Okay, this could be the easiest one in the world to answer, but rather than going with the obvious (writing) I’ll talk about something else.

Guitar.

I was at a wedding a couple of weeks back and ended up on a table with people I didn’t know during the meal. I was worried at first, but it turned out fine because we had plenty to talk about in the end when we all realised that we liked music. I talked about Dave and his band and the chaps beside me talked about their bands. I ended up talking about the fact that I had been learning guitar, but I stopped because I hated having to keep my fingernails short.

Cop out right?

But that’s not the only reason. Yes I like having long(ish) nails and at the moment their painted this really deep, glittery blue and all nicely shaped and whatever. I would have to cut them right down to play anything like I was doing before and keep them that length to continue. But it was also time.

Now that I’ve finished my chunky rewrite of Silk Over Razor Blades (I can’t even call it an edit; I have to call it a rewrite because I did far too much to it) I’m having a break from novels. I’m letting my brain expand again and looking into smaller projects. But that’s given me, suddenly, a huge amount of time. Because I’m not rushing home each evening to sit in the office and type. I’m not spending my weekends in my pyjamas going through text and making it better. That’s all done for the moment.

So there is more time. I don’t want to pick up anything that is too far reaching (more DnD games would be lovely, but they’ll make things difficult in November) and I don’t want it to be anything that doesn’t have a use. Guitar… since I started learning last year, wouldn’t consume all my time and wouldn’t be of no use. I’d love to play an instrument again. I used to play recorder and in primary school I was part of the steel band for two years. I love music. Its just natural.

So. Guitar. Its definitely right up on there on the list of things that I want to do more of, or that I would love to try in a bit more detail. So maybe I will.

In fact… its hanging right next to me. I’ll just give that a go….

Character & Place Names: Inspiration

So I got asked this question on my Facebook yestoday:

Hey Illy 🙂 Just out of interest, what’s your primary source of inspiration for character and place names?

Well… I’m not sure! Its funny to think about, particularly since there are names and weird things all over the prose I write. But I never really thought that they had to come from somewhere before. But of course they do! They don’t all just spring out of my head, and the ones that do still have a base or a foundation in something I’ve seen, heard, done and found that I liked.

So… Simon… to answer your question:

There is no primary source. I use everything!!!

The name ‘Ileandra‘ and where I found it is explained on other pages‘ of this site, but there are other character names too; Trya Fenwyn, Diavian Hatara, Kendra Shalori, Keladora Kalaari, Taithin Shatar, Tristen Church *snerk,* Michael Garran… and those are just some of the characters I roleplay!

The names Kendra and Diavian I saw in the cast lists for some shows that were playing on Nickelodeon about ten years ago. They just seemed nice so I held onto them in my head and then when a character concept came along, I used them there. The name ‘Hatara’ I found when trawling through a Japanese-sounding word list. I don’t think it actually means anything – though I want to check now – but the original word was one I found in this list and changed all the vowels to ‘A’ to make it sound prettier. There you have it.

Even Kalaari – I can’t believe I’m going to give this secret away! – is the name of the brand of printing paper we use at in the office at work. It just sounded so pretty that I nabbed it and used it for a species name.

Other names are just names I like. I used the name ‘Tristen’ in Silk Over Razor Blades. I liked it so much that when my Dad asked me about baby names for my youngest brother I immediately yelled TRISTEN!!! Now that’s my youngest brother’s name (though I don’t think that Dad knows Tristen is such a twisted character in these stories. Hopefully its a future reflection of my brother!).

Other place names I’ve had in my mind for so long that I’ve forgotten where they came from.

Lots of them came from just sitting at my desk in school (it was a history lesson, I was bored) and making a big list of random words. Then I’d go through them (probably in a music lesson) and change letters in them until they stopped looking and sounding like English. Then I would sound them out, see if I liked it, add accents and generally keep hacking until the words had a feel. Funny. Friendly. Expansive. Gentle. Homely. I’d go for all sorts of feels and then just keep the list. Later if I needed a name for a dragon I’d pick a word from the list that sounded hard on the ears (Maioliath) and use that. Or if I wanted to name a village that was quite big and the hub of the country (Serena) I’d use that. Even the world I created for The Ice Wolf Tavern came from something I ate that day. Its called Maltesa… I’ll bet you can guess what I was eating!

So there is no big secret, no big pool of inspiration. Its mainly just about keeping my eyes open, writing things down and not being afraid to modify/scramble/butcher words that you find.

These days I keep a notebook with me at all times, as well as a pen, and every time I buy a new phone I make sure its one that has a ‘voice record’ function. Some of the best names have come from things I’ve seen and had to say out loud to make sure they sounded right. Names like Sabaani (the polar opposite creature to the Kalaari), Minnitwiss – shortened to Minnie (my seldom played gnome character – or halfling if its DnD) and Trya (high elf played on The Ice Wolf Tavern and at my LARPs) are all names modified from something that was on my desk at the time.

Anyway, that’s it. I hope it helps, Simon.
I should also mention, that if you’re desperate or short of time, the internet has a truck load of name generators and etymology sites that are prefect for this sort of thing. Though making them up yourself is a lot more fun! 🙂

Book Review: Mindstar Rising

Author: Peter F. Hamilton
Title: Mindstar Rising
Genre: SciFi
ISBN: 9780330323765
‘Its the 21st century and global warming is here to stay, so forget the way your country used to look. And get used to the free market, too – the companies possess all the best hardware, and they’re calling the shots now.’

It took me a while to get into this. The first section of the book, setting up Greg Mandel as a character and slowly revealing his skills was a little bit slow for me. However, once I got past the hump of his first assignment, Hamilton tossed me right in at the deep end of his world and slowly revealed how to get through it piece by piece.

I loved this book!

Its one of the ones I picked up from Alt Fiction and I do believe it was the one in my goodie bag. Mindstar Rising is the first of the series featuring Greg Mandel and I’m definitely going to be giving him more attention.

I’ve not read much SciFi before, its not really my thing, but part of what helped is that Hamilton is from Leicestershire. He lives near Rutland now, and so all of the places he talked about are either right on top of wear I live or just up the road. It makes it so close. And because the world that the story is set in is not actually a completely impossible look at the future (come on, with global warming the way it is, who is to say that we won’t completely loose loose the ice caps?) it was very easy to put yourself there.

The story is deep and involved; starting on the surface and then quickly diving down, down through the murky depths of a man who has the ability to read emotions, brain signatures and thoughts (to some degree) to the point that he is considered psychic. All from the enhancement of a gland in his brain which allows him to secrete a hormone to help him out.

He is investigating the mercenary sabotage of a multi-billion pound (new sterling) company and the subsequent attempted murder of is owner. Investigative SciFi all rolled up into one.

The action is fast and exquisitely written, the characters are well rounded and built well enough that I did find myself caring about each and every one. Hell even the villains! The story itself is clean and tight. To coin a phrase, a real page turner. I dare you to put it down once you’ve started. I dare you!

Short Stories

There has never been a big push in me to write short stories. I didn’t think I had the discipline for it. Nor did I think I’d be any good at getting the twist in at the end to make it a satisfying read – I need to work on that self confidence thing.

Anyway… now that I’m having a break from Silk Over Razor Blades and Clash Of The Animal Kings, I figure it was about time I started to try some of it. So I started looking around to get an idea of what makes a short story, what makes flash fiction and what makes micro fiction.

In terms of word counts, this is what I found:

Flash Fiction
1,000 words

Short Story
1,000 – 7,500 words

Novelette
15,000 – 40,000

Novel
40,000+

Which made me feel pretty good inside. Most things I’ve written to date have definitely hit and exceeded the 40k mark. There was the yaoi ‘short’ that I wrote for a friend’s birthday which hit 50k. But I’ve not experimented with anything less than that.

So… if you’ve been keeping an eye on my Twitter you will have noticed that I’ve been using the 750 words challenge to write flash fiction. I’ve not done anything with any of it yet, so far I have about five (I’ve been doing them every day which is quite a lot of fun actually. Getting them in before I go to work.). I’m using that A-Z of words I wrote a while ago while sitting in Nero’s to give me a prompt or trigger for each piece (thanks for the idea Maria!).

Its an exercise I’m really enjoying and, I must admit, its doing what NaNoWriMo did for me last year; which is reminding me that I love to write. Bonus! When I have a few more and they’ve had a bit of work done on them (they’re all raw first drafts at the moment; I’ve not even looked at them to edit them in any way) I’ll post them here as special treats every now and then. I’ll call them the A-Z Challenge or something like that.

I’m also hoping that some of them may be suitable to use for competitions or submissions to magazines. Got to be careful though; so far one of them has what can only be called a quirky BDSM vibe, and the other is pure rage rolling off the page in waves you can all but feel (the prompt word for that one was ‘anger’ so I’m not too disturbed by that). Hopefully as I continue through the list they’ll get a bit tamer and more magazine/competition friendly. Lol.

We’ll see. Who knows where my brain will take me now that its free to do whatever it fancies in 750 words or more? Bwahahaha aahaha hah ah ahaaaa!
