Six Sentence Sunday 28/10 #38

Got some votes on what NaNo novel I’ll be working on this year. I’ll admit that I’m a little surprised by the current favourite, but it’s a pleasant surprise. I love this level of interaction with you all and I’m glad you’re playing along with me (I could never have made the decision on my own!).

Since next week I’ll be well into whatever NaNo novel I’m working on, this week will be the last week of SORB samples for a while. I think it would be nice to put the piece fully to bed for a bit and probably look at it again in January. That’s the end point for HarperVoyager (i.e. if I haven’t heard anything by then, they don’t want the piece), so there’s no point messing with it until then. They wanted any submission to them to be solely to them, as well. So I can’t even send it out elsewhere just yet. Never mind.

So… I think I’ll give you one last glimpse into the comedy that is Keith.

This is the same scene as last week, but the action has moved on a little. Keith has been able to show Brad the data on the computer and neither of the pair are happy with what they have seen. Following this, Brad makes a request for help that Keith initially resists. Until…

“I’m fired, right?”

Brad gritted his teeth. “Look at as much gay porn as you want, Keith. Cover it with as much straight porn as you can stand; I don’t care! Just don’t say you can’t help me.” He bent down, waiting until Keith lifted his flushed, embarrassed face off the table.

Uh-oh! Busted…!

I kinda feel sorry for the way I treated Keith, actually. Uncomfortable conversations and dropping him into the middle of a situation he is in now way equipped to handle. Ho hum; I guess that’s what stories are made of, right?

NaNoWriMo 2012 Idea 4

Okay, this is the last idea. I just realised that even though I have plenty more waiting in the wings, so to speak, there won’t be time for you to vote if I don’t open up the polls today! So… I bring you idea number four.

This idea came about from a comment somebody made about satnavs. About technology being out to get us. I liked it so much that I just scribbled a line into my notebook at the time and forgot about it. Since then however, it keeps coming back to me at odd moments and I’d love to write the story that comes from that single line of text.

Problem is, I’m not entirely sure it has the legs to make the 50k mark. It might not be suitable for a novel at all, perhaps its just a novella. I’d need to do quite a bit of planning to ensure it had somewhere to go and perhaps introduce secondary plot ideas to give it the length. Dunno. Maybe with more thought I could drag it up to traditional novel length.

Working Title: Technophobe
Genre: Paranormal/Supernatural Thriller / SciFi???
Summary: Mandy’s life becomes a living hell when a jilted admirer uses her microwave, kettle, satnav and mobile phone to to stalk her every move.

So! That’s all four ideas. If you need a recap for ideas one, two and three, use the links and then make your choice! I’ll round up all the votes over the weekend and announce what novel I’ll be writing on Tuesday. Gosh… I’m biting my nails now, I really am! ^_^

Please use the poll below to cast your votes!

NaNoWriMo 2012 Idea 3

I’m behind on my emails again. I used to read them late at night, while doing feeds with the boys, but the light from my mobile has started to wake them up. So now, when doing night feeds I just kinda sit there in the dark and try not to fall asleep. 😦 I don’t always succeed. This does mean, however, that as of today I have 350 emails unread in my inbox. All wonderful blog posts from you fine people, things that I want to catch up on as I feel horribly cut off from you all.

The only reason that number is as low as it is (low, you cry in disbelief!) is because I’ve been using my ‘time off’ to read through some of the emails. And reading the occasional one or two during the day. I imagine that taking part in NaNoWriMo this year will only make it harder to stay on top of them, but its about balance. I’m planning to be leisurely about it this year, so I might use weekends for blog related stuff, rather than continuing on whatever novel I happen to be writing.

And what novel will I be writing? Well that’s still up to you guys. ^_^ This is idea number three and in a move that might (not) surprise you, its about vampires. In fact, its the next novel in line after SORB, which, of course is a trilogy. The second part of the story follows Ileandra directly after the events of the first where things hot up a bit for her family. It’s not quite a rewrite, but something I’ve started several times and never been able to finish – probably because I was still agonising over SORB. With that done and dusted, its time to keep moving on.

nice red vampire lips with blood and teeth, from OpenClipArtWorking Title: Walking The Razor’s Edge
Genre: Supernatural
Summary: Coming to terms with her new life as a vampire, the peace Ileandra experiences is shaken up when Red Fang kidnap her new friend Shawn Jackson.

I agonised over that summary, not wanting to give you too much of a spoiler to the SORB. If I were to tell you more, then most of the surprises of SORB are moot. So, you’ll have to wait I’m afraid. :p

But this would be yet another interesting project to play around with and perhaps a sensible novel to work on since SORB is now done. Let me know what you think!

Six Sentence Sunday 21/10 #37

I must have been knackered last week because I didn’t even tell you guys that I’d met the HarperVoyager deadline. ^_^

It involved lots of late nights, lots of cursing and deleting and cutting and shuffling and very many cups of tea, but I did it. I polished off Silk Over Razor Blades as best I could and now it’s time to leave it alone.

By the way:

THANK YOU

to all the people who read the piece and provided comments. Be it a sample or the whole manuscript, I can’t describe how valuable your feedback has been. Catching all sorts of things I would never have thought of, hammering at my grammar and continuity. This novel is now at its absolute peak because of you guys.

o.O I’m sure that if HarperVoyager don’t want the piece, I’ll find (more) problems with it, but for now I am resolved to leave it and move on. I sent in the details they wanted at 23:30 on 13 Oct after forcing myself to stay up and do that night. Tell you what though, I’m bloody glad I did, because when I looked at the submission portal on 14 Oct, it had closed! Even though submissions were supposed to be until 14 Oct. Apparently there was some sort of technical glitch, but I’m just glad that I didn’t have to worry about it. My heart does go out to those people who missed the deadline because of the glitch though. Terribly unfair.

Anyway, since I’ve made the deadline, I want to show off a little bit more (!!!), before moving on, so here is another six sentences form SORB, no longer a WIP but a CM (completed manuscript).

A few lines after Keith makes his comments about the ability of ‘Tech’ to find anything, his conversation with Brad continues.

“How do you get away with dressing like that?”

“I’m a volunteer who lives in the basement of this hole. Nobody gives a crap what I look like.” Fingers flying over the keys, Keith shrugged. “Take a look at the report while I sort this out. Your computer is about thirty years passed retirement age.”

I like this guy. I wish I had more space in the novel for him as a character. Unfortunately, his story just didn’t make the final cut. Ho hum.

As ever there are lots more people taking place in Six Sunday. Please use the banner below to visit the main site and say hello. 🙂

NaNoWriMo 2012 Idea 2

I haven’t written anything – properly – for a whole week. Its fabulous! I feel so relaxed and almost rested. I say almost because the boys are still messing about at night. Its not so bad as it has been in the past, but I could certainly do with more rest. Still, having the rest means I’m catching up with books (I’m reading The Hunger Games now) and some much missed TV. Big Bang Theory, The Simpsons and working through series six of Supernatural are all going towards making me a happy bunny. 🙂

But… despite all that, I remain quite excited! The buzz which comes with NaNoWriMo is just beginning and I’m starting to think about if I want to write directly into Word (like I normally do) or if I want to use Scrivener, like I did while editing SORB. That’s a decision still to be made, but I’m getting there. Either or, I don’t suppose it makes much difference.

Anyway…! I still don’t know which is going to be the idea that takes off, but I like talking to you about them. So if you missed idea one, then you should find it here. This, idea two is a rewrite of something I did quite a few years ago, a bit like my first NaNo in which I wrote Clash Of The Animal Kings. I’ve been wanting to return for it for quite some time, but for some reason (well I know why) I haven’t got back to it.

This piece didn’t really have a name – I think it might have been one of those I called IDKY (I Don’t Know yet), or something like that.

dark little fairy, from OpenClipArtWorking Title: Sky Portal
Genre: High Fantasy
Summary: A miserable human waitress is caught between two warring races from the stories of her childhood; Tebacklians and Keifans.

I realise that doesn’t tell you much, but think along the lines of a sort of through the looking glass adventure; someone transported to another world and shakes things up when they get there. Have you ever seen the Tenth Kingdom? I’m fairly certain that I wrote my ‘first draft’ of this tale after that.
