I know I’ve had this rant before, but I can’t help it. Why can (and why do) established authors get away with so much? Such poor writing? Such weak characters? Plots that are completely unbelievable and a stretch even for the crazy characters these authors come up with? WAH!
The song is a lot lighter than what’s actually going through my head right now, but I can barely speak or think.
I love these books. I’m powering through them and still buying more of them to complete the collection. I’m still not going to tell you what they are, as I don’t think I have anything nice to say other than that. But the characters are ridiculous and surreal in a way that stopped being believable at about book seven. I’m now on book eleven by the way. The plot of each book is barely existent; just a long, painful, uphill slog from one orgy to the next. Oh, didn’t I mention? These characters have regular non-penetrative orgies now. *gag*
Sorry that this isn’t at all productive, sensible, or even well written (pot- kettle- black-?) but I need to vent.
So guys… what about you? Any books, stories, or series that have given you trouble? Or do you have anything to vent about? You know, just in general. Come on, join me. ^_^ Spit it all out, clear your mind and then enjoy your weekend. :p I plan to.

Writing: A Conversation Without Interruptions 
Purely my own view, but I think there are a lot of published writers whose books should have never got on the shelves, and there are a lot of unpublished writers, who really should be on the book shelves!
I think often its right place, right time, and definitely who you know…
Regards series books, its very difficult to hold the readers attention – they really have to LOVE the characters.
I stop reading books where I don’t care what happens to the character. Life is too short to carry on reading a rubbish book!

I felt that about FSoG. When I threw my Kindle across the room I realised that I probably should have stopped reading it long before the point I did. Meh.
But these books… I don’t get it. I just bought three more of the series. I’m really, really enjoying how truly awful they are. It’s shocking. And I can’t explain it. I tried earlier and totally failed.

Right now I’m reading Joe Abercrombie’s The Blade Itself. It’s not bad. It’s not. I keep telling myself that. And, I guess, it really isn’t. I like most of the characters, I even like the plot, so far as I can tell. But there’s just something about the writing I am fighting with tooth and nail. Maybe it’s because he’s British? Maybe the rules are different. All I know is he doesn’t use the right quotation marks and it’s killing me. Instead of ” he uses ‘ and I miss almost all the dialogue because he doesn’t create new paragraphs or indent for his dialogue either. I end up rereading most paragraphs because I read dialogue as exposition the first time, and it didn’t make any damn sense.
Now, I’m all for bending the rules to create style, a la McCarthy. But McCarthy is also a mad genius. Joe Abercrombie… the jury’s still out on this one. I’m going to continue reading it, because I do want to know what happens to a couple of the characters. But there are two more books of this? Do I seriously have to read them all? Gah!

Soooooo glad I’m not alone.
I’ve been wanting to read those Joe Abercrombie books for a long time. My ex recommended them to me (we were together at the time, when I trusted his judgement), but I just haven’t managed to get my hands on them yet. Not that it’s hard. Dunno… just been reading anything and everything else.
Don’t know any McCarthy… may have to look some up.

Most people start with The Road for McCarthy. It’s where I started. It’s not too long, and it’s actually really good. But, be warned, he is extremely barebones. He takes grammar and says, “I don’t need this sh*t!”
And basically, he doesn’t because his books are still great. I’d start there, although he also wrote Blood Meridian, No Country for Old Men, and Suttree. I haven’t read any of those yet, though they’re all sitting on my shelf, because I’ve been elbow deep in Brandon Sanderson lately.

I have moments like that but then feel guilty, so I go back and mend things. I really will be sure to look him up.
And isn’t Brandon Sanderson the chap who took over the Wheel Of Time series when Robert Jordan died? I’ve been meaning to grab some of his stuff too.

You’ve got the right Sanderson in mind. He actually just took home to Hugos last night, which is awesome! He’s a mad genius. You can’t go wrong with any of his books.
I have a list on my iPhone of books I want to buy, just in case I find myself in a bookstore unexpectedly. It’s way too long, and sadly books don’t leave it to frequently.

I filled my Kindle with books thinking that was a great way to read more but I just keep adding and running out of hours in the day to read them. I need a separate life, parallel to this one in which I can just read books!
*sighs*
